Andy Murray: "We managed to convert some chances in the fourth set, Colin came up with some good returns in the end and I felt like we deserved to win. Bolelli played an excellent match, he made it really tough for us and was hitting the ball huge from the back of the court."

Colin Fleming: "They hit massive from the back of the court, so it was tough for both of us at times, but I felt like we were on top of the match."

Former British number one on BBC One

"It was a case of the Brits hanging in there at one break down. The Italians were inspired but if you hang in there, their temperaments were questionable. I thought there was another break back in the Brits and credit to them. In the crunch period in the fourth set, Fleming was the best player on the court. I would think Andy was getting a bit tired, and that's what teamwork is about."

  5. GAME, SET AND MATCHpublished at 16:41 British Summer Time 5 April 2014

Bolelli leaves a Fleming return at the net and it drops in for 0-30, and Fognini then goes long for 0-40. All of a sudden, Britain have three match points... Fleming nets a return, Murray then sneaks volley just wide.... the Brits attack the net on the return, Fleming holds firm with a forehand volley and Bolelli cannot claw it back over the net!

  6. Postpublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 5 April 2014

A sharp Fleming volley gets Britain off on the right foot and he then angles away a brilliant smash for 30-0. Murray sticks out his racquet on the next point and knows very little about it, but does enough for 40-0, and he then plays a beautiful angle to seal the game. One game away now...

  7. Postpublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 5 April 2014

Blimey, Murray nearly ends Fognini's weekend, and possibly season, when he slams away a smash at the net and narrowly misses the Italian, who ill-advisedly had given up the point and turned away. At 15-30, Fleming plays an off-forehand that pushes Bolelli wide and draws a poor backhand in response. Two break points.... and Fleming converts the second with a cross-court backhand that Bolelli cannot keep in play.

Murray double-faults first up and it's not pretty, but Britain cling on in this set.

  9. Postpublished at 16:24 British Summer Time 5 April 2014

The Italians ride the wave through to 40-0 and even a Fognini double fault cannot depress the increasingly perky home crowd, who sense a remarkable comeback win here.

  10. Postpublished at 16:21 British Summer Time 5 April 2014

Fleming gets a ridiculous - and very welcome - kick on serve to make it 30-0, but Fognini's forehand and a superb Bolelli backhand peg them back to 30-30. Bolelli then hits a looping backhand return that Murray misses at the net and it's break point for Italy... gutsy stuff from Fleming on second serve, volleying down the middle and causing the Italians to leave it to each other. Bolelli hits another backhand winner, break point number two.... Bolelli puts away a forehand volley at the net, and Italy are in front again.

  11. Postpublished at 16:15 British Summer Time 5 April 2014

Britain work their way back from 30-0 down to 30-30 and for the first time in quite a while, the away fans can be heard in the stands. Fleming chooses the perfect moment to cross at the net and hammers a forehand at Fognini's feet. Break point... Fleming goes just long with a forehand return. Bolelli double faults, the magic has gone for now, and it's break point number two... Bolelli nets a forehand as Murray crosses in front of him at the net, and the British bench are up on their feet.

"It's not like the British pair have done anything wrong, they're just playing a team whose level has jumped. I'd be surprised if the Italians can keep this up, the odds are one of them will drop their level a bit, and then the British team have got to pounce."

Murray plonks a forehand into the net from short range but holds to 15, and it's time for a pep talk from captain Leon Smith. This one is starting to get away from the visitors.

Fognini has obviously had enough top watching his partner dominating the highlights reel and plays two killer lobs in a love hold. Brilliant stuff from the home team right now.

  15. Postpublished at 16:02 British Summer Time 5 April 2014

Bolelli plays another screamer of a forehand for 0-15 but Fleming appears to have taken the sting out of the Italians at 40-15. Fognini comes up with some thunderous hitting and makes it deuce. Murray gambles at the net by crossing, only to see Bolelli hit the return down the line into the space. Break point.... and Bolelli rips a backhand winner. The man of the moment.

  16. Postpublished at 15:57 British Summer Time 5 April 2014

Murray is back in charge as he comes in behind his returns again, heaping the pressure on Bolelli, who nets a forehand and a backhand to trail 15-30. Fognini makes an excellent dart across the net to slam one away for 30-30, and then cuts off a Murray return an the net for 40-30. he goes for the hat-rick on game point and makes a total hash of it, sending a beamer of a forehand towards the line judge. Deuce, and Bolelli outhits Murray in a battle of the cross-court forehands, before seeing out the game with two more stunners off that wing.

  17. Postpublished at 15:48 British Summer Time 5 April 2014

Murray looks to have calmed British nerves with an ace out wide for 40-15, but the Italians come battling back with some heavy hitting and it's deuce. Murray swings one out wide and Bolelli misses the return, and the Wimbledon champion then picks one off his toes before finishing the game with a forehand volley.

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

Times tennis correspondent Neil Harman on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra: The Italians looked completely without hope and inspiration, but Andy Murray and Colin Fleming missed a couple of backhand chances on the Fabio Fognini serve to give them an adrenaline rush and now the momentum is with them. That is the beauty of five-set tennis."
