Murray reminds everyone that he has an extra gear on the return, repeatedly firing backhands at Fognini and following them in. Break point... and the pressure tells on Bolelli, who attempts an extraordinary forehand volley into the backhand side. It doesn't work, and Britain are well and truly in control here.

Bolelli fires a cross-court forehand past the incoming Murray but Fleming makes it 15-15 with a smart move at the net, and at 30-30 Fognini blazes away a return before Fleming seals the game with a backhand volley. The British doubles specialist is really finding his game at the net.

The Italians are in big trouble at 0-30 down but Murray and Fleming cannot make a telling return and Fognini smacks away a couple of volleys behind Bolelli serves to steady the ship.

Former British number one on BBC One

"Italy captain Corrado Barazzutti is trying to calm down Fabio Fognini and just as he looks like he is winning that battle, Simone Bolelli gets involved. He has his hands full trying to keep his pair's minds on the job. The poor fellow. I'd go home if I were him, he's getting a barrage. This is great stuff."

  7. GAME AND FIRST SETpublished at 14:19 British Summer Time 5 April 2014

Fognini fires a forehand straight at Murray at the net to make it 15-15, drawing a few pantomime boos from presumably the British section of the crowd. Italy have a huge chance at 30-30 when Fleming frames one and Fognini has about half an hour to line up the smash, only to wallop it into the net. Bolelli has a long discussion with the umpire, possibly over whether Fleming hit it twice - which it looks like he did - but on set point Murray seals it with a stunning half-volley drop shot. Fognini proceeds to absolutely lose it with the umpire...

Fleming thunders down a smash as Britain cut a 40-0 deficit to 40-30, and Fognini then smacks an overhead way over the baseline to make it deuce. Fognini tops a forehand into the net and looks disdainfully at the court below him, break point... and after Fleming and Fognini trade groundstrokes down the line, Murray launches himself sideways at the net and get just enough on the volley to outdo Bolelli.

Britain go close to another love hold but Murray tries for too much of angle with a forehand volley at the net, and Fleming then bunts a volley over the baseline and it's 40-30. A good Fognini return has Fleming volleying up, and Bolelli puts away a comfortable forehand. Deuce, but Britain edge through a tight game.

Bolelli might be considered the weak link but he swings a good serve out wide for 15-15 and then plays a magnificent rally, effectively taking on the British pair single-handed and winning it with a lob and a smash. One of those rotten forehands into the net pegs him back to 40-30, but Fleming leaks a volley into the tram lines and Italy level. "Italia! Italia!"

Italy make their first inroads with a couple of heavy forehand winners down the centre of the court but Britain edge ahead once again when Fleming leaps on a backhand volley with his nose - but not racquet - hanging over the net.

  14. Postpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 5 April 2014

Murray is able to line up a backhand at the baseline for the first time and the depth he finds is too much for Fognini, 15-15. Murray then thumps a forehand return that draws another Fognini error for 30-30 and the pressure is on the world number 13's serve, but he comes up with a terrific angle on the forehand and sees out the game.

Times tennis correspondent Neil Harman on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra: "Simone Bolelli has made a very tentative start. He did not make either of his returns in the first game and has not settled yet. He has barely got a ball over the net in these first five minutes and looks very nervous. Andy Murray and Colin Fleming are directing plenty of traffic at him."

Fleming gets a confidence-boosting hold to 15 after a Murray defensive lob drops right on the baseline, and his partner smashes away the return. A few chants of "Italia! Italia!" ring around the stadium, early jousting on and off court.

Britain earn the first points against serve as Bolelli flattens two forehands into the net - the word from Dom Inglot is that his backhand is a bit of a weapon but not so much the other wing. The Italians remain ahead throughout the game and at 40-30, Fognini slaps a forehand volley at Murray. Job done.

Murray gets the visitors off to a solid start with a love hold, although his volley at 40-0 is a bit of a gift that the Italians fail to capitalise on. It's a bit gloomy in Naples this afternoon and rain is forecast for later on.

Times tennis correspondent Neil Harman on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra: "If you really had to press me, I would just favour the Italians to win this one. I think that their team play and experience will just edge it, but I hope to be proved wrong."
