  1. Halep wins first setpublished at 17:31 British Summer Time 29 May 2014

Thirty four minutes and a 6-2 scoreline doesn't do Heather Watson much justice. She has been hitting out and trying to take the match to the world number four, but just cannot match her consistency.

The Briton's serve is being picked off with worrying ease. She has won less than one in three points (31%) after missing with her first attempt to tee off.

"Simona Halep is using a tactic which I liked to use and which brought Andre Agassi so much success - basically it involves moving your opponent from side to side on the court. It's particularly effective on clay."

  3. Halep breakspublished at 17:27 British Summer Time 29 May 2014

Heather Watson is paying for every point with bucketloads of sweat. She strains to reach a reflex volley at the net and dinks a deadly crosscourt drop-shot, but still has to win a game of cat and mouse at the net to see off a break point at 30-40.

Halep is relentlessly consistent, landing balls deep in court from all angles. Watson is having to hit two winners to clinch every point. She keeps up the aggression to face down another break point from deuce, but is finally beaten into submission. Halep is a double break to the good.

  6. Halep breakspublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 29 May 2014

Heather Watson is going to have to fight on return because he second serve is an endangered species out on the dusty clay. While it might spit through with a little more pace on grass and hard courts, it is sitting up pretty for Simona Halep to hit through at Roland Garros.

Halep speeds to 0-40 and ensures there is no escape for her opponent.

Simona Halep has an interesting back story, with the Romanian having a breast reduction operation when she was 17 in a bid to improve her tennis career. Her surgery took her from a 34DD to 34C and as a result she rocketed up 450 places in the world rankings.

Speaking at the time, Halep said: "It's the weight that troubles me. My ability to react quickly, my breasts make me uncomfortable when I play. I don't like them in my everyday life, either. I would have gone for surgery even if I hadn't been a sportswoman."

"It's going to make for an interesting match if both players play to their potential because they are both very similar in style. It could come down to who makes the least unforced errors."

  9. Watson breakspublished at 17:14 British Summer Time 29 May 2014

Tenacious as a terrier, Heather Watson bites straight back. Really gutsy, character-proving stuff as she keeps going for her shots, refusing to take her boot off Halep's throats, despite the Romanian's scurrying and retrieving.

A ripped forehand down the line converts break point at 30-40 to level things up.

  10. Halep breakspublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 29 May 2014

Simona Halep is bringing lots of pace to her groundstrokes and Heather Watson is never allowed back into the point after her second serve is given the treatment at 15-15. More pep and zip off the forehand set up two break points for the Romanian and when Watson fails to land her first serve, she is in deep trouble.

Her second is pummelled for a clear winner. Watson will have to find the box first up to keep the pressure on Halep.

This one is bubbling straight away. Heather Watson forces break point, but spears her forehand long to squander the chance. Simona Halep is making inroads with her serve though, peppering the tee. Watson's wingspan is not the greatest and she cannot scrape the barrage back into court.

    Level pegging.

Heather Watson looks like she has taken the advice to get aggressive to heart. The 22-year-old goes for a death-or-glory forehand down the line at 40-30 up and comes up with nothing.

That gives Simona Halep the chance to turn the screw from deuce, but Watson is a tough cookie. She shrugs off the pressure to hold.

"A quick turnaround and where stood the towering frame of Marinko Matosevic a few minutes ago, now we see the considerably smaller but arguably more daunting figure of Simona Halep - a serious candidate for the title in many eyes. The crowd has thinned after Murray's victory and the sun disappeared, neither of which will bother Heather Watson one bit."

"I think it's the right time for Heather Watson to become a more aggressive tennis player. I think she has a chance today - Simona Halep will remember the gruelling three-set battle she had with Heather in the US Open last year and it will play on her mind a little bit."

No messing about from these two. A couple of practice serves, some swishes off either wing and we are ready to go. Watson to serve.
