Marinko Matosevic winces as Andy Murray shuffles him from side to side and finally finds an angle that is beyond his reach.

Neither man has showed much appetite for a trip to the net so far. Maybe Matosevic will have to chance his arm more as we get to the business end of this set.

"I think Murray's return of serve is one of the best in the game. He is almost a foot inside the baseline when he returns and that puts his opponent under so much pressure."

Andy Murray clambers into a Marinko Matosevic serve, throwing every ounce into it to send a return zapping down on his opponent's toes. Punishing stuff.

But Matosevic still has plenty of slap in his forehand and is still in touch.

Lovely soft hands from Andy Murray as he feathers a drop volley over the wire for 30-30. The Scot is in a little bother as he coughs up a break point in the next rally though. Big serve to save it and we are at deuce.

More tee-off power punch holes in Marinko Matosevic's defences and that is another game on the board Miss Ford.

"It's been winter weather here this week - we've had freezing, horrible conditions. We've seen players walking around wearing sweaters."

Marinko Matosevic gets on the board as he lures a Andy Murray forehand return long. He will need to unpick the Andy Murray serve though if he is to save himself in the opener.

Murray looked watertight the first time he turned his arm over. It may be that the damage is already done for Matosevic.

"It's disconcertingly bright after so much gloom as Murray and Matosevic get underway on Court One - The Bullring. The front row seats are as close as you can get to the world's best players in full flow, and a Raonic serve almost took out The Sun correspondent last year. If Matosevic has a trademark 'moment', we'll be in the thick of it."

Andy Murray cracks his first ace of the match down the tee, sending the ball whistling past Marinko Matosevic's ear in blur. A hold to love and already this is looking ominous for the man from down under.

"It's the perfect start for Andy Murray. He never really overdoes it - he doesn't take risks and it frustrates opponents who then miss their shot. He's a great match player - he sees a match as a roadmap and knows how to get from A to B."

Andy Murray won the pair's only previous meeting - back at Queen's in 2013. Marinko Matosevic looks like he has dug out his best Pat Cash outfit to try and strike an early psychological blow in this one.

With the headband in place and a jazzy eighties pattern splashed across his shirt, he is soon in trouble though. Murray takes him to deuce and then hangs tough in a lengthy exchange of baseline groundstrokes. No need to up the tempo or start chasing the chalk. Just funnelling forehands down the middle is enough to milk Matosevic for a mistake.

A forehand long and Murray tastes first blood.

"Andy really is at home on this surface now. From what I hear behind the scenes, he has his eyes on this title. He really, really wants to win the French Open. He has made one or two little adjustments and we might see some of those today."

Andy Murray, speaking to ITV: "I hit a lot of serves yesterday, just to try and get in a rhythm. I'm hitting the ball from the back of the court quite well so if I can serve well, I should be in a good position.

"Marinko is a big guy, who is strong and powerful and a good ball-striker. He is up and down with his performances and if you play inconsistent tennis it can be tough to play against so I need a solid performance and hopefully that will be enough."

"Andy Murray needs a big carrot dangled in front of him and when the possibility of facing Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals was put before him, we saw him produce some of the best tennis he has all year in the first round. He needs to start producing it as well because his defence of his Wimbledon title is really only just around the corner."

Also through is Spain's David Ferrer, following a 6-2 6-3 6-2 victory over Italy's Simone Bolelli. Not that Ferrer was happy afterwards: "I prefer when it's sunny," said last year's runner-up. "The balls are faster, that's true, and I'd rather have a faster type of court. It was too slow today."
