  1. Murray wins second setpublished at 15:58 British Summer Time 29 May 2014

I wonder what is going through Andy Murray's mind at the moment.

The Scot is paying enough attention to keep this match under control with plenty of grey matter to spare. He is back on his seat, pondering where he might visit for dinner and whether Froch-Groves will be on French telly, with the second set in the bag.

If, as seems likely, Andy Murray gets through this test against Marinko Matosevic, he is likely to face Philipp Kohlschreiber because the German is two sets up against Denis Istomin. Elsewhere, home favourite Richard Gasquet has won a first-set tie-break against Argentine Carlos Berlocq while Petra Kvitova has won the first set 6-4 against Kiwi Marina Erakovic.

"Matosevic is losing confidence in what he can do in this match. You can see how quickly this match is drifting away from him - he doesn't have that same intensity which he brought onto court. That's a horrible feeling."

A double fault at 15-30 has Marinko Matosevic back in the sticky stuff and with two break points to deal with.

They add sporting grit to the water in Australia though like it is fluoride though and Matosevic saves both to take it to deuce.

His second serve is just not sturdy enough to hold out against the pressure Andy Murray is applying. The Scot hammers away another tee-off, leaping off the dirt to get a clean swipe at it. Another break point and this time it sticks. Murray will serve for the set next.

At 0-40, Marinko Matosevic looks like he might be on the bullet train out of this match. He summons up the minerals to battle back and see off a persistent Andy Murray though from three break points down. A couple of net charges in amongst all that worked well. He cuts an imposing figure at the front of the court at a touch over six foot three.

Marc: I played a really fun doubles in london c. 1998 with the lovely Annabel, Paul Mac and Jeremy Bates. After the set Annabel said to me "you could have been a really good player," as the horse disappeared gently over the horizon!

Murray consolidates his break with a commanding hold. The Paris crowd are getting fidgety in their seats. After so many seeds were mowed down in the first four days, it does not seem that Court One is going to be the scene of the next upset.

  9. Murray breakspublished at 15:37 British Summer Time 29 May 2014

Marinko Matosevic is backed up to break point by an Andy Murray drop-shot that dies dead as a doornail out of his reach. The Australian come out swinging, with big clumping forehands chasing that one away. Murray is not to be denied though. He knocks on the door again, bringing up advantage.

Marinko chases gamely, but finds himself going wider and wider to stay in the rally. The net ends his misery, snaring his final cross-court fetch.

    Murray has the break.

"I get the feeling that Andy is getting irritated by the shorts he is wearing. He keeps tugging at them and pulling them as though they are bothering him - he often gets annoyed by his clothing."

If it is good enough for Rafael Nadal...

  11. Young's 'what might have been' momentpublished at 15:30 British Summer Time 29 May 2014

    Donald YoungImage source, Reuters

American Donald Young was in reflective mood following his 6-3 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 win over Spanish 26th-seed Feliciano Lopez earlier today. Once hailed as the next big thing in tennis and a former world junior number one, the 25-year-old's career has stalled in the last few years.

"The hype came because at the time I was doing things no one else had done," said Young. "If I had it over to do again, I probably would do a few things different.

"I mean, would I love to be further along by now? Yeah, for sure. But it didn't happen. Now I'm starting to play more consistent than before.

"So I'm not going to be mad it didn't happen earlier, because that's in the past and I can only deal with what's in the future."

Marinko Matosevic is getting twitchy. He doesn't like the state of the clay around the baseline and insistently beckons the line judge forward to have a look at the ruts and bumps. The official finds the right words to sooth a man who goes by the nickname of 'Mad Dog'.

Matosevic's mood will not be improved as he sees a fifth break point of the match slide by unconverted though. Andy Murray is playing within himself and drags his level up a notch when he needs to. One show-stopper of a return briefly puts the brakes on from deuce, but Murray is through unscathed.

"Andy appears to have way too much for Matosevic. He is too solid, he is pulling his opponent from side to side, is moving well and serving well when he needs to. It doesn't seem like this will be a dangerous match for him, that's for sure."

  15. Murray wins the first setpublished at 15:24 British Summer Time 29 May 2014

Andy Murray gets the job done a game ahead of time, breaking Marinko Matosevic to seal the first set. He will serve first in the second set as well. A slight advantage.

"'What was that?' mutters Matosevic after letting three break points slip. The Aussie is a fascinating study in sports fidgeting, at one point demanding the towel between serves, while receiving. He's hit a few thumping winners but Murray is too consistent off the ground, as the lengthy set point demonstrates."

Now then. Within sight of the first-set finishline and Andy Murray's serve is nowhere to be found. It puts its owner is a world of bother, leaving the British number one 0-40 and three break points adrift.

Murray straps on his crampons and sets about climbing back into the set. First two break points are whittled away with some additional tennis, before Marinko Matosevic's front-court dropper dribbles wide.

Murray quashes the rebellion, clubbing away with power and depth that throw up more questions than Marinko's got answers for.

A better player would have made Murray pay there though.
