The Murray serve is keeping Kohlscrieber pinned back. One out wide is out of reach, another defensive slice return is volleyed away before it touches clay and the Scot is through to within a hold of the third set.

Philipp Kohlschreiber rattles along to 40-0 and banks his serve confidently enough. Andy Murray has his cap on by the way. It's been a regular part of his get-up in Paris. He said earlier today that it is to keep his lengthening hair under control as much as anything.

I vote he brings back that bushy afro from his junior days.

A sentence of hard labour involved breaking rocks or mining minerals. I think grinding down Philipp Kohlschrieber is the tennis equivalent. Andy Murray keeps his senses about him to hold serve but the German is causing plenty of trouble. If Murray's guard drops for a moment, he'll pounce.

"What's really interesting is the mix of shots Andy Murray has thrown up today against Philipp Kohlschreiber. When he really wants to flatten out the forehand he does so very well.

"If we had any doubts about Murray's back injury I think he has also put them to rest by the way he got to a drop shot in that last game.

"Kohlschreiber paid the price for dropping the ball a bit short in that game and Murray pounced. I feel as if Murray is very much in command now in this match."

More than a chink of a chance at 0-30. Philipp Kohlschreiber claws back two points, but a cat-like reflex swat volley gives Andy Murray 30-40 and break point.

There is a second serve for the Scot to look at as well as Kohlschreiber punts his first into the net.

A guarded exchange from the baseline as the pair trade angled groundstokes. Murray is the first to get his opponent hurrying though and seizes the chance. Into the net he comes and a stun-volley drops the ball stone-dead and out of reach.

Andy Murray looks like he is getting a handle on Philipp Kohlschreiber's game. The second serve that was being picked off with worrying regularity in the first set is now being sneaked down with more subterfuge. Murray is also getting forward more and wraps away a forehand down the line in one of the games final points.

Philipp Kohlschreiber keeps his serve locked up and out of Andy Murray's reach. The match has turned a little cagey with both players realising that this set could be the ticket into the fourth round.

One break, either way, could be enough to take it.

After succeeding only in fooling himself as he fakes a drop-shot at the front to slip to 30-30, Andy Murray rattles off two quick points, the first a cushioned volley, the second a bomb of a second-serve ace to seal the game.

  9. Postpublished at 18:33 British Summer Time 31 May 2014

Andy Murray is needling and wheeldling his way into Philipp Kohlschrieber's game. He clambers back from 40-15 down to take the German to deuce and is hammering away with forceful forehands.

Murray misses a chance to punish a drop-shot that is too heavy, but there were signs that the Kohlschreiber serve maybe wobbly in the early stages of the set once again.

"Some good aggressive stuff from Murray in the second set, despite hopping a bit awkwardly after a few shots, and he has the beating of Kohlschreiber when he's on the front foot. Staying there is the key."

There are rattling through these sets as well. Thirty-seven minutes for Kohlschreiber to seal the first, 35 for Murray to polish off the second.

"We have seen some really good volleying points from Andy Murray today. Some really sharp play when he wants to finish a point quickly."

A forehand volley punched away sets up two set points and Andy Murray only needs the one.

Serving into a deuce court which is half sun, half shade, Philipp Kohlschreiber cannot pick up Murray's tee-off in time. A straggly return into the net gives Murray the set.

Philipp Kohlschreiber slots away off that smooth single-handed backhand after Andy Murray fails to make the kill, swooping to the net.

    Over to you Andy.

Philipp Kohlschreiber flips a lovely measured lob over the top of an advancing Andy Murray to give himself a sniff at 40-30, but Murray firmly shuts the door on him to stay ahead in the set.

Kohlschreiber will serve to stay in the set next. Let's see how he copes with that.

  16. Murray breakspublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 31 May 2014

Philipp Kohlschreiber's serve is not so hot either when the pressure is on. The German double faults to give Andy Murray 15-40 and two break points.

Nothing wrong with his work off the floor though. Kohlschreiber moves Murray all over the court like a field marshall directing model troops across the world map back in a bunker and then slaps away a backhand. Both break points back in the bag.

Murray presses on though and there is no more magic up his opponent's sleeve. Break back.

Stephen Grant:, external I think Murray should ask for the Spidercam back. He was doing much better then.

Christian Smith:, external Murray is never as injured as he wants you to believe, bad habit of blaming slight niggles for poor tennis

  18. Kohlschreiber breakspublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 31 May 2014

Ugly. Andy Murray, perhaps hurried by an uneven bounce off the line, frames a forehand way, way long to give Philipp Kohlschreiber break point at 30-40.

The Scot plonks his first serve into the net and, with Kohlschreiber licking his lips at the prospect of a second, his next attempt heads similarly south.

The set is back in the balance.

    Russell Fuller
BBC tennis correspondent on BBC Radio 5 live

"Andy Murray started the first set strongly but Philipp Kohlschreiber won five games in a row with some wonderful tennis to take it. Surely history is not going to repeat itself here?

"This match is being played in the best weather of the week with some lovely glorious evening sunshine."

Swish! Swat! Splat! Philipp Kohlschreiber's forehand is like something from a Marvel comic, bags of power and plenty of precision as well. He presses Murray into each corner to bring up 40-0 and make his first mark on the second set.
