Andy Murray has seen off Andrey Golubev and Marinko Matosevic so far on his way to the third round.
Philipp Kohlschreiber speaking to ITV 4 about Murray: "He's won a couple of grand slams and the Olympic gold medal since I beat him in Monte Carlo. He's is going to be a huge favourite but I also know that I have the game to beat him."
Hailing from Germany, Philipp Kohlschriber is ranked 24th in the world and is coming off the back of an impressive clay-court run.
He won an event in Dusseldorf last time out and took Novak Djokovic to three sets in Rome.
Next up on Philippe Chatrier though is British number one Andy Murray taking on a Philipp Kohlschreiber, a man who swept him aside 6-2 6-1 last time they met.
That was on clay, but four years ago.
Andy Murray has risen up the rankings, won Olympic gold, two Grand Slam title and received the Order of the British Empire since then.
But this is a toughie, no doubt.
Let's catch our breath and regather our scrambled senses after that epic with a quick scoot around the other courts.
Andrea Petkovic, the 28th seed, is being matched game-for-game by Kristina Mladenovic. Four games all in the first set.
Over on Court One, it is very much a live concern. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez is leading Donald Young 6-2 6-4 2-6 3-4 with the fourth set on serve.
Patrick Jack: , externalFelicitations Monfils. Incredible match full of twists and turns but the right man won. Top character!
H Shah:, external The Gael force is blowing away the Fog! Sorry
Rhosyn Morgan-Davies: , externalWhere does Monfils get his energy from? I could really use some!
There it is. Fabio Fognini basically chucks his final service game, sliding to 0-40, before flopping a resigned forehand well over the back.
The crowd don't care a jot. Gael Monfils is their man and has justified every penny they have spent on admission today.
I wonder what the patrons on Philippe Chatrier make of missing out on that.
My, oh my. What tennis and what drama! Bums off seats all around Philippe Chatrier but eyeballs superglued to the action.
Gael Monfils earns a break point as he wins a point full of cheeky drop-shots, impudent lobs and a final Fognini forehand into the net.
Converted to bellowing shouts of celebration.
Fognini attempts to take some of steam out of Monfils in the next game, halting him as he serve for a 5-2 lead to examine his strings.
The crowd don't like it. Gael doesn't like it. An ace thunders down and he is a game away.
BBC Radio 5 live
As well as providing five-star entertainment, this saga of a match on Suzanna Lenglen means that time has opened up for BBC Radio live 5 to provide live commentary of Andy Murray's match against Philipp Kohlschreiber.
That is coming up live after this one, on the airwaves and online.
Keep your arms inside the car. The Monfils-Fognini rollercoaster is not over yet. Gael Monfils misses a chance to break in Fabio Fognini's service game and then surrenders his own in the next.
Even stevens. Anyone's match. Anyone's guess.
It isn't quite at the fevered pitch of Court Suzanne Lenglen, but there is early success for the home crowd to cheer on Court Philippe Chatrier where Kristina Mladenovic breaks Andrea Petkovic in the opening game of their third-round meeting.
Petkovic returns the favour in the next game though and we are all square at 1-1.
Here comes the meltdown. Fabio Fognini is disgusted with himself as he sends a forehand long at 30-15 down and chucks his racquet to the dust. It skims narrowly past the ankle of a scampering ballboy who stops in shock.
An apology? That is not his style. Fognini points to tell the ball boy that he needs his towel.
Umpire Pascal Maria docks him a point to hand the game to Monfils.
Fognini then decides that it he wants to have a long discussion about the rights and wrongs of the decision.
Of course, Gael Monfils can lift himself. The French 23rd seed's sense of drama is almost as keen as his groundstroke timing.
He clings onto his serve by the skin of his teeth in the opening game and then breaks Fognini to love, his final drop shot catching a net cord to leave the Italian stranded.
Fabio Fognini complete a fourth-set whitewash. Now, can Gael Monfils lift himself for a final heave at the Italian?
The crowd are whipping up the atmosphere as he steps up to the baseline. Pure adrenalin hanging in the air...
Next up on Court Philippe Chatrier where Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic takes on Andrea Petkovic before compatriot and 12th seed Richard 'Reee-schard' Gasquet plays Fernando Verdasco.
As Piers, mentions though the main drama is over the way where we are into a fifth, final and deciding set...
Piers Newbery
BBC Sport at Roland Garros
"It might be a harsh comparison but Nadal made a grand total of 10 errors this afternoon while, over on Lenglen, Fognini has racked up 67 and counting.
"It's fair to say that the drama has not been on Chatrier though, and the eight-time champion puts away a spirited Mayer to take his record at Roland Garros to 62-1. 'When I see the Chatrier stadium full, it's very emotional for me,' says Nadal."
Done and dusted for Rafael Nadal. So far he has beaten Robby Ginepri, Dominic Thiem, Leonardo Mayer and will play Dusan Lajovic for a place in the last eight.
It is not exactly an illustrious list of names, but he is yet to drop a set and you can't say fairer than that.
Fabio Fognini is carving through the fourth set like a samurai butcher.
He breaks again and Gael Monfils will have to make a big, clunky gear change to lift himself for the decider that this match is surely heading for.
Rafael Nadal is not exactly making heavy weather of this, but it has not been a stroll in the French sun either.
The defending champion looks like he has finally put pay to the challenge of Leonardo Mayer though with two quick breaks moving him a service hold away from a last-16 meeting with Serbia's Dusan Lajovic.
Settle in for a fifth. The momentum swings back to Fabio Fognini as he breaks Gael Monfils for a second time to take a 3-0 lead in the fourth.
