Andy Murray tops the break with a hold of serve. He is well short of his best, but, after taking a hit in the first set, might be getting his grey matter around the conundrum presented by Philipp Kohlschreiber.

The Murray radar is still spluttering. He cuffs one long before chunking a groundstroke into the middle of the net on the next point. The Scot suddenly happens upon on tactic that seems to be working though, returning deep and central straight back at Kohlschreiber.

The German fails to dig back two in a row and Murray is into deuce. He takes advantage as well, whipping away a forehand before luring the German long. Break to Murray. But he had one of those early in the first as well.

There are classy touches decorating this match from both ends. Andy Murray employs a little side-spin to bring a forehand down the line down in play for 30-15, before Philipp Kohlschreiber dinks a crafty cross-court dropper that dies almost under the umpire's high chair.

A regulation big serve, ripped down the middle, takes the game for Murray in the end.

Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 live

"There has been a turnaround here as Andy was in total command of the set at the start. He is getting increasingly frustrated by the quality of Philipp Kohlschreiber's tennis.

"Kohlschreiber is such a wonderfully talented player and in the past I think he has lacked belief but has come into this tournament on the back of a tournament win in Dusseldorf. He has played some impressive tennis in that first set but can he keep it up?"

"A few worrying signs for the Murray camp as their man looks distinctly uncomfortable at times, especially when moving out to the forehand side. Kohlschreiber is a class player and taking full advantage."

  6. Kohlschreiber wins first setpublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 31 May 2014

Andy Murray is not quite the full ticket here. He is not moving freely, reluctant to slide after dropping balls and looking grim-faced between points. Sheer grit, mixed with percentage shot selection, see off two set points at 40-15.

Murray needs a hefty slice of luck to survive a third though as a net cord helps the ball skip past a poised Kohlschreiber at the net. Philipp Kohlshreiber shoots himself in the foot on a fourth, double faulting. Jitters?

It doesn't look like it though as the German bashes a backhand down the line that gets Murray all out of shape to create a fifth break point. A duffed volley into the net and that is Murray's first-set goose cooked.

  7. Kohlschreiber breakspublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 31 May 2014

Andy Murray takes to the skies, hopping into a forehand, but his timing is all askew. The Scot is in a bit of a hole here at 0-30. With Philipp Kohlschreiber smooth as silk off the floor and on the volley, the Scot can't quite dig himself out either.

Fifteen-forty and two break points and Kohlschreiber converts as he tip-toes to the net and kills Murray's stretched forehand with a drop-dead volley. Like a sniper with a silencer. Lethal.

Philipp Kohlschreiber shows that he can do delicate. He replies to an angled slice from Andy Murray by tickling over a deadly drop-shot of his own and wraps the game up with a precise lob that drops down just inside the baseline.

    Ominous.

  10. Kohlschreiber breakspublished at 17:38 British Summer Time 31 May 2014

Philipp Kohlschreiber is posing problems when he gets a read on the Andy Murray second serve. He steps out to make room to crack a return winner for 30-30 and is then handed a break point as Murray buries a forehand into the belly of the net.

Murray pumps long to cede his advantage in the opener. The Scot is whacking his left hip area, trying to get the blood flowing around the region. Is he struggling with an injury?

Without the distraction of 'spidercam', Andy Murray cruises through his service game to love. There is plenty of pop in his service arm this afternoon and Philipp Kohlschreiber could not find anything to get his teeth into there.

Andy Murray is not a fan of the "over-court spidercam" that whizzes around on a high wire over his head.

Before teeing off in the next game he asks the umpire if he can get it stopped.

  15. Murray breakspublished at 17:25 British Summer Time 31 May 2014

Andy Murray's backhand is sparkling. It is flying off the strings spick and span as he cuts off a Philipp Kohlschreiber charge to the net with a lovely pass for 30-40 and a break point.

This time the world number eight makes it stick with another beauty off that wing.

  16. Postpublished at 17:22 British Summer Time 31 May 2014

Andy Murray hammers his first double-handed backhand winner, arrowing the ball clean down the line for a winner and 15-15.

Philipp Kohlschrieber shows that his single-handed action can deliver similar quality though as he clips a fine angled winner.

He clambers into a forehand return to clout a winner off Murray's second serve and, just like in the first game, we have 15-40 and two break points.

A service winner and another pinpoint down-the-line backhand save both for Andy Murray.

This match has opened at suffocatingly high quality. Murray grinds though to hold serve, but this is going to hard, hard work.

  17. Postpublished at 17:16 British Summer Time 31 May 2014

Andy Murray is immediately putting Philipp Kohlschreiber's serve under the microscope, itching to get forward and put the pressure on from his first shot in the rally.

Kohlschrieber looks a little taken aback by his opponent's eagerness and finds himself two break points and 15-40 down. He is a wily operator though.

Kohlschreiber mixes up his delivery, getting a couple of serves to kick into Murray's body and the chance is gone for the Scot.

"Well it's no surprise that the crowd has thinned out a bit on Chatrier as the locals grab some sustenance after the Monfils Show, but there are enough still here to give Murray a hearty welcome. The sun is dipping behind the stand now and there's a light breeze, all rather pleasant. Unless you have to run around for three hours."

  20. Postpublished at 17:12 British Summer Time 31 May 2014

Andy Murray speaking to ITV Sport: "He is a tough player. He likes the big stages, pushed Djokovic close in Rome and won in Dusseldorf, so he is confident and in form. It will be a tough match. On his day, he plays some top tennis and has been around the top 30 for years now."
