Djokovic guides a big backhand down the line and though Raonic gets to it, the ball finds the net to give the Serb the mini-break. Out comes the fist pump but the joy is short-lived as Raonic wins only his sixth point on the Djokovic serve in this set to break back.

Crucially, Djokovic wins the next point and then breaks again to bring up two set points. The first disappears as a backhand slice ends up in the net. But Djokovic is not to be denied in the next, the Serb firing a brilliant kick serve out wide that Raonic can only send into the tramlines.

Raonic will have to do it the hard way if he is to join compatriot Eugenie Bouchard in the semi-finals.

"It's surprising to see Djokovic, a set up, looking so frustrated by the serves whistling past him as he knew this was coming. Meanwhile, the schedule for Wednesday is out and, as expected, Murray v Monfils knocks last year's final repeat, Nadal v Ferrer, off the main Chatrier stadium. It will be Murray's first match this year on Chatrier, but he had a hit here this morning and will doubtless be back ahead of the approximate 15:00 BST start tomorrow."

Some great scrambling from Djokovic, but he can't get enough on the returns to gain control of the point and Raonic levels the set once more.

Raonic chooses to make a rare foray to the net, but it's easy pickings for Djokovic who easily passes the Canadian with a backhand down the line to clinch the game to 15.

Ari Samet: I totally agree with Levi Gould, Djokovic's defence is one of the best in the game, it will take something exceptional to break past Djokovic!

Djokovic gets a sniff of a breakthrough at 30-30, but Raonic then hammers down an ace and wins the next point to close out the game.

Lovely exchange at the net mid-way through the game with Raonic whipping up a delightful cross-court forehand passing shot to reduce the deficit to 40-30. However, the Canadian goes long in the next point and Djokovic moves back in front.

Djokovic can't make any in-roads on the Raonic serve and the Canadian cruises through the game to love in double-quick time.

"A huge reaction from Djokovic after he does the seemingly impossible and breaks Raonic's serve to take the set. Coach Becker does his best Ivan Lendl impression and remains calm and seated, dark glasses hiding his thoughts, before standing during the changeover and surveying the scene. Three times a semi-finalist here, he never quite made it. His job now is to get Djokovic over the line."
