"Moments after Sharapova battles through on Chatrier, Bouchard pulls off a similar comeback on Lenglen. From 4-2 down she took control of the match, and managed to cope with the nerves when serving it out - double faulting and missing a backhand on two match points before taking her third. That's a second Grand Slam semi-final in a row for the 20-year-old. 'I'm very excited to play in a semi-final in Paris, it's a dream,' she says in French. 'I love being in Paris, it's like being at home.'"

It's a second straight Grand Slam semi-final for Canadian Eugenie Bouchard who holds her nerve on her third match point to seal a three-set victory over Carla Suarez Navarro. That's the fourth time Suarez Navarro has lost at the quarter-final stage of a Grand Slam. Bouchard plays Sharapova in the next round.

"Maria Sharapova rarely fluffs her lines in three set matches. Garbine Muguruza was fabulous in the first set but once the 2012 champion had edged the second, there was only one winner. Salute Sharapova's mental strength, but don't assume she's the champion elect. She has the experience, but there are others still in the draw arguably playing better."

Next up on Philippe Chatrier is the first men's quarter-final featuring number two seed Novak Djokovic and eighth seed Milos Raonic. The players will be on court shortly.

Over on Suzanne Lenglen, the match looked like it belonged to Carla Suarez Navarro when she went 4-1 in the deciding set before being hauled back to 4-4 by Eugenie Bouchard. Now, Bouchard finds herself serving for the match at 6-5 after breaking the Spaniard's serve for the third time in the set.

Garbine Muguruza was just two games away from another huge upset and though her game broke down to let Maria Sharapova back in, you get the sense she has the quality to improve on her current world ranking of 35.

  7. Postpublished at 15:23 British Summer Time 3 June 2014

Maria Sharapova, the 2012 French Open champion, will play either Carla Suarez Navarro or Eugenie Bouchard in the semi-finals.

  8. GAME, SET AND MATCHpublished at 15:18 British Summer Time 3 June 2014

The comeback is almost complete for Sharapova as the consistency and big hitting that had Muguruza dominating the first one-and-a-half sets deserts her to give Sharapova three match points. Muguruza saves the first but can do nothing about the next. Sharapova wins her second successive three-set match.

Muguruza's unforced error count has overtaken that of Sharapova at 57 to the Russian's 50. For Sharapova, it's now a case of keeping the ball in play and waiting for the Spaniard to hit long. It works in this game, Sharapova holding to 15. The Russian now just one game away from the semi-finals.

"She's back. Bouchard shows why many observers think she has the mentality to be a Grand Slam champion one day by breaking to love and then holding in double-quick time, levelling at 4-4."

What. A. Point. Sharapova drags Muguruza from side to side and then winds up her backhand and hammers one down the line, from just outside the tramlines, to bring up two break points. The Spaniard saves them both, but then finds herself staring down the barrel of a third. Some big deep hitting is too hot to handle and Muguruza succumbs with a weak forehand. Sharapova secures a double break.

Ari Samet: At this point it looks like Sharapova has broken through Muguruza's threat to take the lead once again and break her in the third set. Tim could be right.

Ben, Manchester: This is what makes Sharapova's matches so interesting, she could produce some great tennis or the wheels could come off at any moment.

It is anyone's guess what kind of shot is going to come off the Sharapova racquet at the moment. The Russia finds herself break point down when she drags a forehand wide of the tramlines. She saves that, but another forehand error puts her back under pressure.

She slaps a forehand winner down the line and we're back at deuce but it's Muguruza's turn to throw in a bit of magic, guiding a forehand winner down the line. Another break point.

Sharapova saves it by cleverly going to the Muguruza forehand but her first serve isn't good enough in the next and the Spaniard latches on to it, whipping it cross-court with venom for a winner. Deuce. Break point. Deuce again. I've lost count.

Sharapova rustles up a game point at last, but she can't win three consecutive points and, yep, you guessed it, we're back at deuce. Sharapova gets another game point and this time she takes it. Nearly 15 minutes that game.

"The ice-cool Bouchard is starting to feel the heat, swatting her racquet angrily at the clay after her footwork lets her down, and facing break point she again cannot get in position to retrieve Suarez Navarro's angled, leaping backhand. The Spaniard moves 3-1 up."

Huge error from Muguruza on the forehand flank and Sharapova senses an opportunity with a break point. Big hitting - and shrieking - from both players in the next, but it's Muguruza who makes the error and Sharapova breaks. No wild celebrations from the Russian, just a simple fist pump.

Sharapova fires a killer stare at her box after watching a very slow second serve get the treatment from Muguruza but she refocuses to win the next two points and seal the game.

Muguruza continues to impress out on Philippe Chatrier, the Spaniard once again recovering from 0-30 down on her serve to 40-30 with her ferocious hitting. She then heads to her chair with a spring in her step as she watches Sharapova dump a backhand in the net. Muguruza still has designs on causing another upset.
