Eugenie Bouchard snatches one break back and then holds serve to force Carla Suarez Navarro to serve for the set for a second time. This set is far from over.
Sharapova races to a 40-0 lead, but Muguruza continues to make her work for every point. The Spaniard pulls two points back before making a rare backhand error and Sharapova holds on....just. "Come on," roars Sharapova before taking up her position to receive serve, bouncing up and down on the spot and playing a few practice shots.
Sharapova looks lacklustre out there, her shrieking/grunting getting louder by the second. Muguruza takes the opening game of the second set with a crunching forehand winner. It's one-way traffic on Chatrier.

"Bouchard has had real problems timing the ball against Suarez Navarro's leaping topspin, and the usually rock-solid Canadian has made a host of errors under pressure. Suarez Navarro goes a double break up at 5-2 when Bouchard mistimes a backhand horribly."
BBC Tennis:, external Muguruza has played 3 sets against Serena and Sharapova. She's won them 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1.
The crowd on Philippe Chatrier are left stunned as Garbine Muguruza breaks Maria Sharapova, a four-time Grand Slam champion and seeded seventh for this tournament, to love.
The Russian is all at sea. One of her serves hit the ground before clearing the net while she gave up the game with her 14th unforced error.
After 23 minutes, Maria Sharapova manages to rustle up a break point, but it goes wanting and Garbine Muguruza calmly rattles off the next two points to move to within a game of the set. Remarkable scenes on Philippe Chatrier.
Andy Murray may have played three days in succession but he has no intention of putting his feet up today. The Wimbledon champion, who beat Fernando Verdasco in three tough sets yesterday, is out for a hit with coach Dani Vallverdu keep an eye on proceedings.
Carla Suarez Navarro, the 14th seed, leads Eugenie Bouchard, the 18th seed, 4-2 on Suzanne Lenglen. Canadian Bouchard, 20, who made the semi-finals at the Australian Open earlier this year, has made 10 unforced errors and won just four points on the Suarez Navarro serve so far.
"Come on!" roars Maria Sharapova, the Russian trying desperately to get herself going. She scrapes through her service game to finally get a game on the board. She now trails 4-1.
Muguruza said before the match that she has "nothing to lose" and that she is "going to rise to the challenge". Well she's certainly living up to that billing. Another service hold sees her move to 4-0 clear. It's a very subdued atmosphere on Philippe Chatrier. I don't think anyone expected this.
I've got good news and bad news to report on the British front in the juniors.
Scottish left-hander Isabelle Wallace is through to the third round of the girls' singles recovering from the loss of the first set 6-0 in 22 minutes to beat Tereza Mihalikova of Slovakia 0-6 6-3 6-4.
However, Katie Boulter lost 6-0 6-3 to Ioana Loredana Rosca of Romania and she now turns her attentions to the first round of the doubles with Serbian partner Ivana Jorovic later today.

"Back on Court Andy Murr.... Court Suzanne Lenglen again, where Suarez Navarro has got an early break against Bouchard. The Canadian had said beforehand that dealing with the Spaniard's heavy topspin and single-handed backhand would be a real test and it looks like she was right. "Come on Genie, wake up!" shouts someone in the crowd. Bit harsh."
Based on the opening few minutes of this Sharapova v Muguruza encounter, you wouldn't think this is Muguruza's first ever Grand Slam quarter-final.
The Venezuelan-born right-hander is playing a blinder, comfortably holding her serve and then rustling up three break points.
Sharapova saves the first two but then throws in her second double-fault of the game to gift Muguruza another break. Sharapova trails 3-0.
Sharapova has been in impressive form on the red stuff this season, winning 16 of 17 matches and improving her career record to 51-4.
The Russian won her 31st WTA title at Madrid last month, defeating Simona Halep - who is the highest ranked player left in the draw - in the final.
Speaking ahead of this match, Sharapova said of today's opponent: "She is someone we have heard about being an up-and-coming player for a couple of years.
"This is certainly her breakthrough tournament, and she's playing with lots of confidence. It's going to be a challenge for me, but that's what I love about this game."
Garbine Muguruza has come out fighting, hitting the ball so sweetly and cleverly going deep to the Maria Sharapova forehand. Her reward is a break right at the start of the match.
The players are out on court and warming up on Philippe Chatrier. Maria Sharapova, the 2012 French Open champion, will have the honour of serving first against Garbine Muguruza.

Milos Raonic against Novak Djokovic is the second match on Philippe Chatrier with Tomas Berdych taking on Ernests Gulbis second on Suzanne Lenglen.
I'll been keeping you up to date on all of those throughout the afternoon.
Afternoon all and welcome to our live coverage of day 10 of the French Open. We've got the first of eight quarter-finals, across both men's and women's draws, for you today.
Maria Sharapova celebrated like she had won the French Open when she beat Sam Stosur in the previous round, dropping the first set but winning the last nine games to clinch a hard-fought three-set victory.
The Russian is not the highest remaining seed in the draw - Simona Halep has that honour - but she is the favourite, courtesy of the four Grand Slam trophies sat on her mantelpiece.
The woman who stands in her way of progressing to the semi-finals is Garbine Muguruza, the world number 35 who dumped top seed and defending champion Serena Williams out of this year's tournament.
Can the Spaniard add Sharapova to her list of big-name scalps? Or will the Russian's experience and power prove too much?
