Beverley teenager Kyle Edmund has lost the first set against Austria's Andreas Haider-Maurer on court 12 and trails 6-3 2-2.

Dan Evans also has ground to make up on Andrey Kuznetsov after losing the opener in pretty emphatic style, going down 6-1.

Naomi Broady is really scrapping out on court 16. The 22-year-old has bitten back taking the second set on a tie break and is 6-2 6-7 (5-7) against Timea Babos.

Djokovic cantering away with his opener - he takes the first set 6-1 in less than half an hour, hitting nine winners to Golubev's four. The Kazakh also made eight unforced errors in that set, an indication that he's maybe trying to do a little too much. But against the tournament favourite, wouldn't you?

Former British number one on BBC TV

"One of the last matches I played was against Tsonga at the US Open. Technically he is not the most sound but his athletic ability and muscle make him so effective. He really is a modern-day player."

"I don't turn the TV on, watch too much of the tennis, read the papers or go online. I just avoid the hype and focus on tennis. My coach [Amelie Mauresmo] said to me to try to take in the atmosphere as a defending champion and we talked about the other things that come with being the champion, such as the extra pressure."

Impressive start from last year's beaten finalist Novak Djokovic against Andrey Golubev on Centre - he's raced into a 3-0 lead after 13 minutes of the contest, breaking the 56th ranked Kazakh in his first service game. The Djoko hair looking in equally fine form - as glossy and impervious to movement as that of a Lego figurine. Does 'figurine' rather overstate the art that goes into a small plastic brick man with limited hinging?

"To get that reception when I came on to court was very nice. I enjoyed the walk to the chair and was keen to get on with business. I was nervous, probably more yesterday, but getting ahead early helps settle them down a bit. I played well and hit the ball cleanly from the beginning. I thought the serves were a very high level. He played well and was aggressive and quick around the court, and played some really good tennis."

Boris Becker, who looks like he has caught a bit too much of the south London sun earlier today, takes his seat to see how charge Novak Djokovic does on Centre Court.

Elsewhere Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is about to kick off his campaign against Jurgen Melzer while Britain's Dan Evans is into his first game against Andrey Kuznetsov.

Our friends from Hawk-Eye have been analysing Andy Murray's victory over David Goffin. Here's what they made of Murray's first serve direction:

"One of the standout aspects of Murray's game in winning Wimbledon last year was the quality of his first serve. He made 65% of his first serves and won 79% of points behind it throughout the tournament.

"Murray changes his serving tactics considerably on grass, going more often than not down the T on both the deuce and ad courts. He continued this trend on his first serve in his opening round against Goffin, posting hugely impressive numbers. He made a 71% of his first serves, with nearly half of them not being returned, and he only lost 8 points behind it in the entire match."

Andy Murray's short of match fitness and adjusting to a new coach. Rafael Nadal has exited early in his last two visits to Wimbledon which was never his favourite tournament any way. Roger Federer has edged over the hill.

That is the logic that makes Novak Djokovic favourite for the men's title for many observers. Time to find out how that theory pans out on grass.

The 2011 champion takes on Andrey Golubev on Centre Court next.

"Li Na was definitely tested in that first set. There were too many mistakes, but she found her game just in time and was much more convincing in the second set.

"There are so many good things about Paula Kania's game. She has great depth on her groundstrokes and she's ready to absorb power and movement. There's no doubt this performance has been such a tremendous boost for Kania. It's given her confidence and belief, and that's so important for players making that transition from the lower level. I really like what I see, and I expect to see more or her and for her ranking to rise pretty quickly. She's ranked 183 in the world - but that will go up in a big way."

Li Na, speaking to BBC TV's Phil Jones after her victory over Tour debutant Paula Kania: "In the beginning, she was using my power against me and I had to run around. I was really happy in the end to win.

"I didn't do well in my last Grand Slam [a first-round exit at the French Open], but that didn't mean anything here. The first match is always tough, but I will find my game, and I hope I do well here."

Grigor Dimitrov is home and hosed. The Bulgarian wins through 7-6 (7-1) 6-3 6-2.

As is Li Na. Centre Court finishes up just after Court One with the Chinese Australian Open champion polishing off Paula Kania.

And there will be a queue for the showers because Venus Williams has seen off Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor 6-4 4-6 6-3.

Elsewhere Great Britain's Naomi Broady trails Timea Babos 6-2 1-2, while Kyle Edmund is warming up ahead of his match against Andreas Haider-Maurer.

David Ferrer's topsy-turvy, see-sawing match against Pablo Carreno Bust is coming back his way. Ferrer leads 6-0 6-7 (3-7) 5-1.

Aljaz Bedene - the Slovenian who intends to switch his nationality to British on residency grounds next year - will not get any more time to ingratiate himself with the British public losing 6-3 7-5 6-2 to South African Kevin Anderson.

"I like Paula Kania's body language. She doesn't get negative with herself, she just moves on to the next point. But Li Na is spending more time in the forecourt, coming in as she tries to win the point, and that's the way women's tennis is played these days. You don't want to give away any real estate on the baseline."

"You have to hand it to Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor for hanging on in there in the second set against Venus Williams and sending the match to a decider. At this stage of her career, Venus gets edgy when the going is tough. Now it is up to Torro-Flor to keep the pressure on but I wouldn't be surprised to see Venus up the intensity and go for broke."

    Upset brewing on court two?

Venus Williams used to mow through the early rounds as routinely as the All England groundsman. No longer.

Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor nabs the second set and we are into a decider. She leads 2-1 on serve in the third.
