"These are the sorts of matches you don't mind at all. The first set Goffin was feeling his way into it. He was a user-friendly opponent - someone that won't blow him off the court but that he could rally with."

"Murray has got the job done - and in some style at times. A convincing winner. He can enjoy the moment and it was an impressive way to start the defence of his title. There was no sign of nerves and he leaves to a standing ovation from the crowd. I think he feels like he belongs here."

"Andy got tested there, especially in the third set. He got the break when he needed it. Goffin picked up his game - and so did Andy."

This from Andy Murray in the aftermath: "I thought it was a very high standard match. I was glad to finish it in three. Sometimes you can win in three sets and not play that well, but I'm pleased with the way I struck the ball. I was nervous this morning and I was nervous last night, but once you sit down on the chair it's time to get on with this year."

The usual look up to the sky from Murray, a muted fist-pump - sweatbands ripped off and flung into the crowd. There will be stiffer tests to come if he is to retain his crown, but that is an untroubled way to begin the journey.

Curious forehand error from the Briton, clouting a simple winner well wide. Second serve sitting up - Goffin into that, 0-30. The Belgian throws his racquet at the next serve but the gamble fails - into the net-post - and another crunching first serve brings it back to 30-30. Long rally, Goffin longer with his forehand - match point. Acer down the middle, job done...

Great Britain's Dan Cox managed to take Frenchman Jeremy Chardy to a tie-break in the second set, but that might be all he takes from his Wimbledon wildcard entry into the main draw.

    The 23-year-old is 6-2 7-6 (7-3) 2-1 down to Chardy.

Elsewhere Marcos Baghdatis has taken the first set and a 6-4 3-4 lead on Dustin Brown on court 12.

While Bernard Tomic is 6-4 3-0 up on Evgeny Donskoy.

Real wobble from Goffin - cruising at 40-15, he throws in a sloppy backhand, a double fault and a tame forehand to offer up a break point. Murray with a howitzer return of serve, Goffin slicing... long! Murray a single hold of serve from the second round.

  9. Postpublished at 15:05 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

Murray showing minimal sign of any scoreboard pressure - a second hold to love, Goffin perhaps pinning his slim hopes on a spot of burglary in the tie-break.

  10. Postpublished at 15:02 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

Goffin, cruising at 40-15, misjudges his own serve, thinking it long, and fails to get in position to deal with the return. Murray cudgelling a backhand down the line with sweet timing, but then plopping a tame forehand block into the net off a second serve to yield the advantage, and another backhand error sees Goffin keep his gingery nose in front.

"It's very cloudy overhead now. In fact some of those clouds are looking a little greyer than we would like, although the showers are not expected to come until around 19:00 BST."

A changing of the guard on some of the high-profile courts.

Bulgarian dreamboat Grigor Dimitrov is on Court One against American Ryan Harrison.

Five-time champion Venus Williams goes up against world number 56 Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor on court two. Double double-barrelled, get her.

And David Ferrer takes on Pablo Carreno Busta on court three. Ferrer, who has never been past the last eight at Wimbledon, withdrew from his warm-up event in s'Hertogenbosch due to illness. An upset candidate?

Murray starting to stretch his legs and show his class, holding to love as the match moves into its 105th minute. Still cloudy overhead, but a significant spread of hats on display around Centre - the panama just shading it from the trilby for the gentlemen, the wide-brimmed floppy a clear winner for the ladies.

    John McEnroe
Three-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC TV

"What's happening too often for Goffin is that after a hard-fought service hold, he's then losing on Murray's service game far too quickly. He's not managing to ease the pressure.

"Goffin should be thinking of ways to move forward, because it's difficult to dictate play from the baseline."

Crisp backhand volley from Goffin as he races in behind his serve - never a hardship to see a man serve-volleying, and his display in this third set has been a considerable improvement on the shakiness and shonkiness of the first two.

  17. Postpublished at 14:51 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

Murray will slice and slice off the backhand, the ball sitting lower and lazier on the Centre Court turf with every stroke. Hold to 15, the applause contented rather than raucous. Which is entirely appropriate.

  18. Postpublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

Ah yes, Goffin - delightful drifting backhand down the line, albeit off an approach from Murray that asks insufficient questions. A genuine beam from the Belgian as he returns to his chair - he even appears to be asking our umpire: "Did you see that?"

Victoria Azarenka wags a finger towards her player's box as she out-grits and out-muscles Mirjana Lucic-Baroni to get her feet up in the locker room with a 6-3 7-5 win.

Now then - Goffin in to the net, punchy volley, 0-30 on the Murray serve. Murray is forced to scamper out wide - drags a double-handed backhand cross-court, and Goffin can't lift his reply over. Murray with a forehand that sits up - well played David, onto it with quick feet to put the backhand pass away for two break points. Murray being tested for the first time - dicey on that forehand, but it just clears the net and Goffin can't repeat the trick. Long, surely, from Goffin - come on, line judge - yup, confirmed by Hawk-Eye, a good metre long. Up your game, sir.
