First little glimmer for Goffin - 30-30 on Murray's serve, second serve, no beef on it either - Goffin clouts to Murray's forehand side, but the Scot manages to readjust his feet and cream a forehand into the Belgian's backhand corner that he can only frame away.

Goffin can't get his feet moving here - off-balance and out of synch for both a forehand and an over-balancing backhand that drifts well wide. Murray has two break points; Goffin wide again, this time off the forehand wing, and in the friends and family section Amelie Mauresmo allows herself the smallest of smiles.

38 minutes gone, and Goffin yet to wangle the thinnest foothold in Murray's serve. Murray wipes his face on a dark green towel proffered by a supplicant ball-boy, but he's barely had to break sweat so far - hold to love, on we go.

Murray working Goffin over like a lean middleweight dismantling a naive sparring partner. Forehand after forehand forcing him wider and wider; the Belgian in to the net for a why-not joust, Murray flashing a topspin lob up and over his opponent's token reach. Lovely volley from Murray, moving through the repertoire and to within a hold of serve of the set.

Wince from Goffin as he slips on the lush grass and eats turf. Is that Shaquille O'Neal in the VIP slots? Pity the man sitting behind him. Straightforward hold for Murray, muted atmosphere.
