Titters from all around as a spare ball drops from Murray's pocket mid-point and necessitates a let. His serve far from impregnable so far - he was only landing 50% of his first serves in that first set - but Rola is unable to handle its heat when it does land, fending a backhand into the net to concede the game.

  2. Stakhovsky into third roundpublished at 13:47 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Wimbledon is deprived of one of the more colourful characters, as Latvia's Ernests Gulbis departs in the second round, losing in straight sets 6-4 6-3 7-6 (7-5) to Sergiy Stakhovsky. Gulbis is the top-ranked men's seed to fall so far.

Gulbis, who caused much merriment earlier in the week after confusing a question from the media about "umpires" with "bloodsucking vampires" following his first-round win, now heads home after falling to a man ranked 80 places below him in the world.

Ukrainian Stakhovsky reached the third round at Queen's earlier this month, but is best known for eliminating seven-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer in the second round last year.

  3. Latest scorepublished at 13:44 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Britain's Tara Moore has the whole of court two as her backing chorus.

The Briton is full of scurry and scamper and she makes Vera Zvonareva sweat gallons to hold her serve and stay in the decider.

Moore has a break in her back pocket still though and will come out to serve at 4-3 to the good.

  4. Andy Murray v Blaz Rolapublished at 13:40 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

    John Lloyd
Former British number one on BBC TV

"Blaz Rola is not used to some of the shots that Murray is firing back at him. People ask if it's good to have one or two tough matches early on at a Grand Slam to test you, but I think you want to have your matches as easy as possible, and save yourself for the second week."

  5. GAME AND FIRST SETpublished at 13:40 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

What a shot from Murray, accelerating onto his backhand to ping a reply over the net-post from way out wide and leave Blaz, who believed the point won, flailing. Double-fault from the big man, and Murray with a forehand that's too hot to handle - set in the bag, 13 errors in it from Rola to more than negate his eight clean winners.

  7. Murray & Peers into second roundpublished at 13:39 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

  9. Postpublished at 13:34 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Murray into his grass-court groove now, holding to love, moving Rola around mercilessly, entirely at ease, marching on.

  10. Get involvedpublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Stephen Vernazza:, external Rola is going to give it everything including the kitchen sink, it seems. Could be a good test for Murray.

Mark Saville:, external Why are there empty seats on Court One? I'd give a lot to be at #Wimbledon and see Murray.

Maverick:, external Murray looks good for this set. He needs to stay focused, stranger things have happened.

  11. Postpublished at 13:32 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Murray to 0-30 as Rola struggles to get his toes twinkling on this unfamiliar surface. Lovely exchange, Murray with a floating drop-shot, Blaz flicking it back on the half-volley, Murray dinking a backhand lob over his opponent and down to bite the line. Rola marooned mid-court like a chimney awaiting demolition, and Murray takes him down with a ruthless cross-court pass. Two breaks now, the plot following a familiar course.

  12. Andy Murray v Blaz Rolapublished at 13:32 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

    Andrew Cotter
    BBC Sport commentator

"Since Blaz Rola joined the tour, other players have been coming up with nicknames for him. 'Bay City' is my favourite. If you're of a younger generation, and don't know who the Bay City Rollers were, you're very fortunate."

  13. Postpublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Former Australia spin bowler Shane Warne:, external Must admit I do love that Wimbledon make all the players wear white #tradition. Good luck Andy Murray, lucky he's not playing a Sri Lankan...

  14. Postpublished at 13:28 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Venus Williams, who beat Kurumi Nara in straight sets 7-6 6-1 and could face former champion Petra Kvitova in round three:

"In the tie-break it comes down to who is the more consistent and I was able to turn it around. She had some good shots and you have to take it all

"Petra and I both play a similar game and go for it. She is the type of player who plays well against me and I have to be ready for that."

  15. Postpublished at 13:27 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Nice again from Rola, a delicate topspin lob that leaves the champ flat-footed, and a blistering backhand this time. Murray tugs a forehand wide, and from nowhere Break has a blaz point - I beg your pardon, Blaz has a break point. Ace out wide to the leftie forehand, Rola rooted. Danger averted.

  16. Postpublished at 13:27 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

    Anne Keothavong
Former British number one on BBC TV

"Venus got off to a slow start and wasn't herself in the first set.

"However, she freed up in the second but she will have to be a lot better in her next match to progress further in the tournament."

  17. Venus Williams into the third roundpublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Venus Williams takes advantage as injury catches up with Kurumi Nara. The six foot one inch American towers over Nara, a full foot shorter, as they exchange pleasantries at the net.

If Petra Kvitova beats Mona Barthel, it will be two former champions meeting in the third round.

  18. Postpublished at 13:23 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Mmm - two lovely leftie forehands from Rola, running round and opening his body up to flay them into Murray's own forehand corner, and he's on the board. Glimpses of what this rank outsider can do, and Court no.1 rather likes it.

  19. Zahlavova Strycova into third roundpublished at 13:21 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Women's number 32 seed Elena Vesnina is out in the second round, losing 6-4 6-2 to Czech opponent Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.

Zahlavova Strycova reached the final of Birmingham earlier this month, but lost in two sets to Wimbledon 11 seed Ana Ivanovic.

Vesnina was the first winner at this year's Wimbledon when she breezed past Patricia Mayr-Achleitner 6-0 6-4 in the first round on Monday.

  20. Andy Murray v Blaz Rolapublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

    John Lloyd
Former British number one on BBC TV

"Every time Murray misses with his first serve, Rola is looking to attack the second. He knows that's his best chance to get ahead in the rally. Rola's got big forehands, but Murray shows how good he is at soaking up the pressure."
