"To me at the beginning of that game it looked like Novak was playing not to lose rather than win it but Roger went for it and was as aggressive as he could be."

We thought Novak Djokovic didn't do nerves.

The Serb overcooks when offered a clear corridor down the line and then nets on the backhand love-30 and it may not be over yet.

That put-away was icy-cool though and a serve into the body brings up 30-30.

Federer fending, but then to the fore. Djokovic's backhand flies long over his shoulder for 30-40 and a break point.

Djokovic misses with the first serve. Into a rally off the second. Both men finding jagging angles. A Djoko slip! Federer finds the unguarded open court. Stefan Edberg is up. Everyone is up on their feet.

    This ain't done yet.

"Novak knows he can't just keep the ball in play because Federer is going to be so aggressive, so it was really important for him to make that break count and hold his serve."

Roger Federer doesn't normally do gutsy. Courage isn't often a quality called upon when you are as good as him, but to come hustling at the net at 15-15 demanded it. He puts away the stretching volley and the crowd believe.

Maybe not as much as Novak though. He works Federer over with the full range of shots, hunting the lines and dragging the Swiss from corner to corner to bring up 40-30.

He urges the crowd to raise the volume of their appreciation for that point before closing out.

    He is a game away.

"It's amazing you have one break of serve in three and a half sets and then you have three in a row. Djokovic will take his time in this one because he can almost see the finish line."

    Now, we are cooking.

Novak Djokovic wrestles the momentum back his way. Federer presses long at 30-30 to offer up the break point and falls on his sword via a netted backhand.

The Serb is snarling. He doesn't intend to repeat the lapse of a game ago.

"That's the mark of a champion - to come straight back and break back but what is impressive is that Djokovic gave him nothing; Federer earned everything he got."

"It's amazing. I thought this match was over. I don't think Djokovic played that bad, Federer just played some unbelievable shots. It was great play, because that was his last chance. If Djokovic had consolidated for 4-1, I don't think Federer would have come back."

Reports of the demise of this match have been greatly exaggerated.

Roger Federer emerges a man reborn and burgles the Novak Djokovic serve right back. Love-30 via a video review, the crowd sensing blood. 15-40 and they demand the finishing touch.

Federer supplies it and then some. Lunging wide he cracks a cross-court return winner and it is lucky the roof isn't on. It would have been lifted clean off.

Is this the beginning of the end?

Roger Federer whacks a forehand wide to offer up 0-40 and three break points.

One saved. Another bagged up with a regulation overhead. Into the net once more. And Djokovic misses his mark down the line. To deuce and the great escape is on.

Djokovic tightens the thumb-screws though in the next, forcing his way forward until he is within range to put away the backhand volley. A fourth break point. This time it sticks. Federer finally running out of strokes and now he faces the longest road back.
