Rafael Nadal bares his teeth, gives Martin Klizan's serve a shake and is rewarded with the first break of serve of the second set. Klizan cuffed long as he attempted to face down a second set point.

Clench the fist, lock the jaw, narrow your gaze towards Uncle Toni in the stands. You know the Rafa celebration drill.

Nadal with a chink of light in the second set. It is "Kliznan 6-4 2-4 Nadal" on the board.

    Sam Smith
Former British number one on BBC TV

"The 6-3 scoreline makes the opening set look a little easier than it's been. Heather Watson's had to save a number of break points. There have been too many loose shots from Ajla Tomljanovic in that opening set. There were lots of tricky moments, but that's a nice one for Watson to have tucked under the belt. Or her long floaty dress."

    Jo Durie
Former world number five on BBC TV

"Heather Watson's played well enough to get through that opening set, but it will be interesting to see if Ajla Tomljanovic ups her game. I expected more winners from Tomljanovic. I thought she'd go for Watson - and she's got to go after her a little more. Watson's too comfortable in the rallies at the moment."

This time, it's Maria Sharapova's turn to get a break point and the converts it to open up a 3-1 lead over Britain's Samantha Murray. The Russian turns away, clenches her fist and then refocuses, examining the strings on her racquet and then races through her next game to love. How will Murray respond?

Petes McLean:, external "The Slovak is playing like Novak. Great game so far but will Rafa wake up?"

Matt McGladrigan:, external "Nadal a set down again! Absolutely deserved by Klizan, just smashing the ball. Can he pull a Rosol?"

Robin Armstrong:, external "Rafa has admitted he feels pain in his knees each match. On clay he can work around it. Can he here, on grass, up against it?"

Rafael Nadal's changeover routine is a lot like that employed by schoolboys up and down the land to try and swerve the fungus-fest of post PE showers.

The Spaniard wipes down each limb with his towel and wipes a handful of water through his hair. All that is missing is the squirt of too-strong deodorant under each arm.

He bounces back out of his chair on serve in the second set, but behind in the match, trailing Martin Klizan 6-4 2-3.

    Mark Woodforde
Former Grand Slam doubles champion on BBC Radio 5 live

"There's no sign of a hangover for Heather Watson so far after a busy week at Eastbourne. I'm enjoying the way she's trying to force the action against Ajla Tomljanovic by coming forward to the net. I think that's going to give her lots of reward as the match unfolds."

Britain's Samantha Murray, who has career earnings of £130,000 compared to £30.3m of her opponent Maria Sharapova, rustles up a break point. The Russian saves it and closes out the game but Murray, the world number 247, will be boosted by the start she's made in this match against the reigning French Open champion.

"Watson has to see off a clutch of break points on her way to a 5-3 lead against Tomjlanovic on Court Three, and when the time comes to serve out the set, the British number one recovers from 0-30 to see it out. There's a nervous moment when Watson appears to have clinched it, before Hawk-Eye sends her back to the service line, but she takes her second set point with a clever sliced forehand and the home crowd go (relatively) wild."

    John McEnroe
Three-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC TV

"He's down a set in the opening round but the way Nadal reacted to holding serve in that game, pumping his fist and jumping into the air, was like he had just reached the final. You have to admire his motivation."

  12. Postpublished at 15:38 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

Eerily familiar. Marin Klizan pumps his fist as he lamps a dipping forehand winner away for 15-15. All very reminiscent of Rosol and Darcis.

Nadal, backed up to the brink at 15-40, saves one break point with a fiery serve down the centre and a second is back in the bag as Klizan twangs the net cord.

Deuce. Nadal's backhand under little pressure nestles in the net for a third break point. Ace. And Nadal uncorks a vintage forehand finally get across the line.

Rafa is looking a little hangdog rather than his usual puppyish self though.

    Klizan leads 6-4 1-2.

Caroline Garcia of France dumps number 14 seed Sara Errani out of the championships in three sets on court 16 - 2-6 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 (7-3). Errani is the highest-ranked seed in the women's competition to exit so far.

This was a match held over from yesterday, having been suspended due to bad light. Italian Errani, a 2012 French Open finalist, has never been beyond the third round at SW19.

This is the second successive year Garcia has reached the second round - last year she was beaten 6-3 6-2 in Round 2 by Serena Williams.

The line judges on a sun-kissed court two have definitely drawn the short straw. I've already witnessed two of them having to fling themselves to the side to avoid being wiped out by the 135mph bullets being served up by Milos Raonic. The Canadian eighth seed, who has never got beyond the second round at Wimbledon, has just taken a two set lead over Australia's Matthew Ebden.

    Virginia Wade
1977 Wimbledon champion on BBC TV

"Sam Murray's a very hard worker and she hits the ball well. She's played a lot of matches at university in the States. It's a matter of hitting a couple of good shots early on, otherwise everything can go terribly wrong. We get used to seeing Maria Sharapova struggle early in her matches; she tends to make life difficult for herself."

  17. Postpublished at 15:34 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

Samantha Murray gives a very good account of herself in the first game of her first round match against 2004 Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova. The 26-year-old Brit forces her Russian opponent to deuce. And deuce again. And deuce again before Sharapova finally holds.

    John McEnroe
Three-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC TV

"Make no mistake, this guy Klizan is a dangerous first-round opponent. He is playing better than he has ever been before. I do think Nadal has a tremendous volley but his movement is so key to him. When his movement is not quite there it affects his confidence in the other parts of his game."

    Martin KlizanImage source, Getty Images

Martin Klizan staged a sit-down protest over Richard Gasquet's tardy play at the Aegon Championship earlier this summer. I wonder what Rafael Nadal's pre-point twitching and tugging might provoke him into?

Klizan finishes the first game of the second set on the seat of his shorts, but only through his efforts chasing a winning Rafael Nadal forehand.

Nadal holds serve for 1-0. And Klizan responds in kind for 1-1. The world number one is not out of the woods by a long way, in fact this could get all Blair Witch very quickly.

"It's very easy to get overwhelmed on these occasions. Sam Murray's got to keep it simple, enjoy herself and remember to breathe."
