The results are in for our vote which asked: Of the four former Wimbledon champions in action today, who is the greatest? As you can see, there's a clear winner...

    Federer 73% Nadal 12% Williams 9% Sharapova 6%

    John McEnroe
Three-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC TV

"That was one the greatest points you will ever see on this court from Nadal to set up that break point. They should show a tape of that point to every kid in the draw to show them what it is like to fight for a point."

Ninth seed Angelique Kerber of Germany and Poland's Urszula Radwanska have just strolled onto court. The winner of that match will play Britain's Heather Watson in the second round.

  4. Postpublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

Rafael Nadal shakes Centre Court out of its stupor with a magnificent running forehand from wide and deep on deuce. The rest of the men's field just don't make 'em like that and there are bottoms off seats in appreciation.

It might be a turning point as well as a point for the highlights reel as well. Klizan strays on the next point to give Rafa an early third set break and a 4-6 6-3 1-0 lead.

  5. Postpublished at 16:15 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

Maria Sharapova is on course to complete this match in under an hour as she consolidates another break to lead Samantha Murray 6-1 4-0. That's now nine games in a row for the Russian.

"Very well played, Heather Watson. That will feel very satisfying. She had to fight for it and gain control of the points, but she did that so well. It was such a clever performance. I was a little disappointed with Ajla Tomljanovic, though. I thought she could have done more. But it's a learning process for her, she's only 21."

So we will have at least three Brits in action in the second round with Heather Watson joining Andy Murray and Naomi Broady. Samantha Murray faces an uphill battle while compatriot Daniel Smethurst is about to start his bid to make it four. He's on Court Three against big serving John Isner, the ninth seed.

Damned lies and statistics. I can't promise the former but here are some of the latter.

Martin Klizan has hit 27 winners to Nadal's 18. The Slovak has made 10 unforced errors, only one more than Nadal.

That is an aggregate win for the underdog when they go looking for the lines.

"Come on Sam," shouts someone from high up in Court One, as Samantha Murray prepares to serve at 2-0 down against Maria Sharapova in the second set. But it looks like there is no way back for the Briton, who has now lost seven games in a row. Sharapova leads 6-1 2-0.

    Andrew Castle
Former British number one on BBC TV

"An hour-and-a-half of intensity from both players. I wonder if Klizan can withstand the inevitable onslaught from Nadal now?"

  11. Postpublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

    John McEnroe
Three-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC TV

"How much energy did Klizan expend in those first two sets? It was not a good sign that at break-point down he looked whipped. The key for Klizan now is early in this third set he needs to get a lead and not let Nadal start dictating. That is easy for me to say from the commentary box!"

Rather lacklustre applause from the Centre Court crowd as Rafael Nadal sees off two break points and holds serve to level up the match at Klizan 6-4 3-6 Nadal.

I think the patrons caught the sniff of an upset and rather liked the smell. There still might be more drama for them yet...

  13. Watson through to second roundpublished at 16:07 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

    Piers Newbery
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

"Watson serves out to love, as cool as you like, to beat Tomljanovic 6-3 6-2 for another great win in what is turning into an impressive year for the Briton. A member of the groundstaff gets a hug and the Court Three crowd get a beaming smile and a wave. That's three Britons into round two of the singles."

  14. Postpublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

    Virginia Wade
1977 Wimbledon champion on BBC TV

"Sam Murray has got to try to stay in the points a little longer. When you play somebody whose concentration is as good as Maria Sharapova's, you've got to try to match them in that area. Sharapova is definitely taking control of things out here."

  15. Postpublished at 16:03 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

Maria Sharapova clinches the first set 6-1 in just over 30 minutes on Court One in her first-round match with Britain's Samantha Murray.

Martin Klizan ushers his serve through to safety from the perils of deuce. Rafael Nadal will have to serve out himself if he wants this second set and parity on the scoreboard. Balls up his end of the court with the second set 5-3 in his favour.

  17. Postpublished at 15:59 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

A change of line judges on Centre Court as the designer-clad officials stride out, tug the slacks off their knees and crouch to call the whitewash. Martin Klizan will serve to stay in the set at 6-4 2-5 against Rafael Nadal.

  18. Watson leads 6-3 4-1published at 15:58 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

    Piers Newbery
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

"Things really could not be going much better for Watson on Court Three, with her own game firing on all cylinders and Tomjlanovic proving increasingly erratic from the baseline. A wayward backhand from the Croat sails long and Watson gets the double break to lead 6-3 4-1."

    Virginia Wade
1977 Wimbledon champion on BBC TV

"I know that there's been criticism of the fact that Sam Murray got a wildcard even though she is ranked in the 240s, but she was up higher. I'd rather players got rewarded by the prize money they win at Wimbledon than given money by playing matches. I'm all in favour of the wild cards.

"There are signs that Sharapova is beginning to time her serve. There is a danger that panic might start to set in for Murray."

  20. Postpublished at 15:54 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

From the highs of the first game, where Samantha Murray forced Maria Sharapova to deuce and really put the Russian's serve under pressure, to the lows of the business end of this set where the Briton is broken for the second time to give Sharapova the opportunity to serve for the first set on Court One. Sharapova leads 5-1.
