It is an absolute corker of a day on Centre Court. You can almost hear the ultra-violet buzzing out there.

The seats are rapidly filling up. The two either side of the umpire's chair, to be filled by Maria Sharapova and Angelique Kerber are still empty, but won't be for much longer.

"Sabine Lisicki has made a much brighter start to the third set - she took a break at the end of the second set and she has left the disappointment of that behind her and looks strong again."

"Did I say that Amelie Mauresmo wasn't using that racquet? She is now, getting involved in an end-of-session volleying game. With laughs all round, it's hard to state just how relaxed Andy Murray is.

"Session done, he gathers his kit, poses for the odd photo then strides away to enjoy his day off."

Brutal stuff from the diminutive Romanian. Fifty-seven minutes on the clock, one Kazakh underdog thoroughly stuffed.

Sixty-two points to 33 in total. Into a quarter-final against either Sabine Lisicki or Yaroslava Shvedova she goes.

Andrew Jarrett, the Wimbledon Tournament Referee, has spoken to BBC Radio 5 live about why there is no play on the middle Sunday of the tournament:

"From a scheduling point of view I'd love to play on the middle Sunday, but it's not that simple and the main reason is about the grass. It needs time to recover, it takes a battering in the first week and it needs a good soaking and it needs its own rest and recuperation to perform in the second week."

In the picture above, Andy Murray is reacting to Jarrett's decision to close the roof during his semi-final against Jerzy Janowicz last year. I don't know his views on the middle Sunday. I doubt they would prompt that sort of animated reaction.

Marc in Diss, via text: "I'm with Novak. Keep tradition by leaving the singles schedule as it is. But keep middle Sunday for the doubles, juniors, over-35s, etc., plus any unfinished 3rd round singles. No play on one of the only four days most of us aren't working? Ludicrous!"

After Novak Djokovic's suggestion that Wimbledon put on matches on the middle Sunday, we asked what rule change you would make to the tournament:

Luke Jones:, external A shot clock would be great for box office but its an unnecessary added pressure for the players.

David Barlass:, external Transform Wimbledon into a hard court tournament. Tackling the air of elitism associated with Wimbledon and tennis in Britain.

Fiona:, external Why not start the show courts earlier, if not at same time as outside at least 12 instead of 1?

    andy Murray

"A very relaxed Andy Murray is hitting with British number three James Ward. Volleys, then serves, watched by Amelie Mauresmo, who for two days has held a racquet but said little, watching on intently.

"Such is in the interest in the practice courts, I was just in time to get the last media pass available. However, the courts are split into sections, with a stern man asking questions of all who want to get near Murray. I must have the knack because I can't see any other journalists here."

    Liz Smylie
Former Wimbledon doubles champion on BBC TV

"Simona Halep has lovely positioning and doesn't let herself get too far behind the baseline. She has lovely footwork and is looking sharp. Her team will be happy with the performance so far. It is hard to hit winners against her."

That is looking a lot like Sabine Lisicki. The German is seeded 19th, but has a pedigree a lot better than that at the All England.

Runner-up last year, semi-finalist in 2011, quarter-finalist in 2009 and 2012, she has taken the first set against Yaroslava Shvedova.

It has not been a good morning for Kazakh tennis so far.

    Eugenie Bouchard

"Photographers - six of them - trained on a figure in pink. Eugenie Bouchard is probably used to the attention by now, after two Grand Slam semi-finals already this year. She batters forehands at her hitting partner, who is no more than a punch bag. 'Good depth' is the cry from across the net."

    Liz Smylie
Former Wimbledon doubles champion on BBC TV

"Halep uses the court so well and Diyas will have to cover a lot of ground. Halep has so much confidence and winning breeds winning and she knows she can get out of a tough situation if she needs to - which she hasn't needed to here yet."

  16. Postpublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

    Tim Henman
Former British number one on BBC Two

"Roger and Rafa have had different paths to this stage. They are both finding a way to get through but the opportunity of the top four in the semi-finals is still there which is exciting.

"When you think about where Nick Kyrgios has come from, he has taken advantage of his opportunity so well and he is a great prospect and it will be interesting to see how he fares against Rafa on the big stage.

"If he can get off to a good start then he has a chance of settling down. If Rafa gets off to a quick start it could be tough for the Australian wildcard."

BBC Weather's Carol Kirkwood has just been on BBC Two promising us a day as sunny as her personality. Just a slight chance of rain in the late afternoon.

    Lindsay Davenport
1999 Wimbledon champion on BBC Two

"Maria Sharapova is now the favourite for the women's singles and although she has suffered from fatigue over the last few years coming here after the French Open, I don't see that happening this year.

"I cant say enough good things about Genie Bouchard and she is the second favourite to win.

"For Simona Halep it is a tough transition she is so good on clay and hard and the grass is a bit quick for her.

"Kvitova is the favourite in the bottom half and has a good record against the other three players. Here she looks comfortable and believes she can win."
