Most people expected day one to end with the score 1-1, albeit possibly not in the manner it did, but as with most of Britain's ties it comes down to winning the doubles.

The Murray brothers have seen off France's Tsonga and Mahut, and Australia's Hewitt and Groth, in the last two ties and in theory should not be threatened by any combination the Belgians come up with.

It's pretty certain that Darcis will play, and every chance that Goffin will join him.

It could have been even better for Great Britain this evening.

The Belgian showed his top 20 class though as he fought back to give the hosts first blood.

"The Murray brothers combine so well in the doubles - Jamie has been to two Grand Slam finals on the doubles tour this season and then he has his younger brother - one of the best singles players in the world - come in.Their spirit is good and their play is awesome".

GB captain Leon Smith: "I don't think that Kyle could have started any better than he did. His level on clay is very very good, he has not played many five-setters and it is difficult to keep your focus over that length of match especially against someone who is in the top 20 in the world.

"It was a difficult match for Andy because Ruben was able to come out and swing for the winners, but Andy managed to withstand that."

  9. Player reactionpublished at 18:36

Andy Murray on BBC Two: "The third set was tricky after missing a few chances early on and he started going for his biggest shots when the new balls came out.

"The crowd were getting wound up and you have to use that your advantage. It was a good atmosphere and it is going to be tough over the next couple of days.

"We have good tactics for whoever plays in the doubles."

Mark Wilkins: It's getting spicy out there! I'm not sure that Bemelmans, should've made AM angry?

Adam Peake: Is it just me or is the scoreline a bit unflattering towards Bemelmans? Some of his shots have been top 20 quality.

Alison Edgar: I'm not sure it's the GB captain's job to back Murray when he is clearly swearing. He should tell him to shut up.

Laura: This crowd reminds me of when the Belgians got behind Henin in her semi-final at the French in '03. Come on Andy don't let it affect you.
