The timing is so sweet off Andy Murray's racquet, it means that Ruben Bemelmans finds the ball coming at him so fast that he has little time to react.

  2. Game and second set Murraypublished at 17:25

    *Bemelmans 3-6 2-6 Murray

Andy Murray gets the bird from the crowd, as he has a little moan about the shouts coming from the crowd.

He doesn't let it bother him though as he sends a smash into the crowd and Bemelmans nets a volley to give Murray three set points.

There it is. Bemelmans goes long and Murray is two sets up. Was it ever in doubt?

    Bemelmans 3-6 2-5 Murray*

Ruben Bemelmans absolutely loves a drop shot - and fair play to him, he isn't bad at them.

Having said that he follows a successful one up with a horrendous effort from deep, as Murray wins two points in a row to move to 30-30. Half chance?

A deep Murray return forces the Belgian to miss and it is break point GB. Saved by a brave backhand winner but Murray has another chance as his opponent nets.

No mistake this time as Murray's booming backhand flies past Bemelmans. Murray has a double break and is serving for the second set.

Andy Murray had a mini-fright at 0-30, but played three very good points to snuff out the danger.

  5. *Bemelmans 3-6 2-4 Murraypublished at 17:17

Murray loses the first point on his serve, dumping a shot into the net from deep. A whiff of a break? Murray is sent chasing around the court, before Bemelmans passes him at the net to go 0-30.

Strong reaction from Murray though as he forces his opponent into errors to win the next two points.

Bemelmans then goes long and into the net as Murray holds on.

  7. Bemelmans 3-6 2-3 Murray*published at 17:12

Bemelmans is playing some decent stuff, none more so than a backhand that lands bob on the line, to Murray's chagrin.

The Belgian has two game points, make that one, as Murray's backhand jab passes his incoming opponent. He makes sure of the next point though, sending an overhead past Murray after the Brit's weak lob.

    Bemelmans is hanging on...

Bemelmans was handed a lot of free gifts in that game and really should have taken advantage. Andy Murray is not going to be as generous in many other games. It has not been a good game from either player really.

  9. *Bemelmans 3-6 1-3 Murraypublished at 17:08

Finally, Andy Murray wins the game, smashing away at the net.

A few sloppy shots from the Brit there though, including framing the ball straight into the roof,

Bemelmans needs to take advantage of so many gifts. He won't get many chances.

  10. Murray taken to deuce...published at 17:05

    Bemelmans 3-6 1-2 Murray*

Bemelmans has a couple of chances to put away volleys at the net, passes them up, and then smashes a reverse overhead well wide.

He can't afford to miss chances like that and, sure enough, he is 30-0 down as he nets after a long baseline exchange.

His return then goes long but, after Murray sends an ambitious angled backhand cross court wide and lazily hits a forehand long, he takes the game to deuce with a lovely drop volley that just can't be reached.

    Into a third deuce now...

  11. Bemelmans 3-6 1-2 Murray*published at 16:56

Ruben Bemelmans is refusing to go away quietly as he punches away a volley at the net to take advantage at 30-15.

Murray's defence is ridiculous though as he turns a sticky situation into his point with a brilliant lob from deep, that Bemelmans can only net with his reply.

The Belgian gives himself a good talking to after volleying away a winner and wins the game with another well-worked drop shot that Murray reaches, but sends long and wide.

While Andy Murray is out on court, Kyle Edmund has been doing his media duties in the wake of his loss from two sets up on David Goffin in the first singles rubber.

  13. *Bemelmans 3-6 0-2 Murraypublished at 16:52

Andy Murray is in cruise control. A booming ace sets up two more game points and he makes no mistake, with another unreturnable bullet.

Strains of the hokey-cokey can be heard from the crowd. You'd imagine from the away fans?

Plenty of net play going on here from both players. Murray desperately lunges as Bemelmans touches a volley over the net, to no avail.

A drive backhand volley from mid court is too good as the Belgian goes 30-15 up but Murray stays with him and then leaves his opponent stranded at the net with another drop shot and the lob sets up break point.

'Come on' is shouted by Bemelmans as Murray is forced wide to save, but it is only temporary relief as a stunning backhand pass wins the break for the Scot.

It was an interesting set. When Andy got the early break it seemed a foregone conclusion, but Bemelmans got back into it. I'm not sure that the drop-shots and mixing stuff up is going to be enough to keep Andy at bay over five sets though.

Daniel Tierney: Andy Murray is a hell of a player when in full flow, he gets more returns than the post office.

John Pierce: I'm sorry but if Andy brings this home for GB, sportsperson of the year for sure. End of.

Perhaps the most impressive showing from Andy Murray in this Davis Cup run was against France in the quarter-final when he held off two really good players in Gilles Simon and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to win both singles rubbers just after reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals.

  18. Game and first set Murraypublished at 16:40

    *Bemelmans 3-6 Murray

Murray serving for the first set and it starts well as a cross-court forehand, followed by a drop shot, leaves him an open court to win the first point. A big serve sets up a backhand winner to make it 30-0, before Bemelmans responds with a backhand winner of his own.

No problems though for Murray as he takes the game and the first set. He is looking comfortable out there.

Daniel Hykin: Wouldn't surprise me if Bemelmans drop shots a lot to try and waste Murray 's energy more than anything. Tire him out for Sat/Sun

Max Baggins-Craig: Stunning start from Andy, but equally brilliant Bemelmans is right back in thick of it, this looks to be interesting for sure

"As Murray takes an early grip on proceedings, a good percentage of the paying public have made the bold decision to skip the opening few games and take advantage of a shorter queue to the bar.

"The sound of low-level revelry is providing a steady hum rolling under the stands. They might want to drink up fairly quickly if they wish to see much more tennis this afternoon."
