    Duckworth 6-7 (5-7) 2-6 4-6 Hewitt

The noise inside the Rod Laver Arena finally troubles the decibel meter as Lleyton Hewitt concludes his on-court interview. He waves to all sides of the arena, and to his box where his actress wife Bec (she starred as Hayley in Home and Away, of course...) and his children wave back.

"This win is great for me," he says. "It's great for the kids, as they are old enough to remember it all now."

Lleyton Hewitt on his playing career continuing after beating James Duckworth: "It was a tough situation to block out everything else that is going on. It's not like the last round of a football season when you know that it is all over after the last game of the season. I've prepared as normal, came out and stayed in the moment. I blocked it out pretty well."

The Russian has made it even easier for the already dominant Wawrinka - he's pulled out. Injured. Tough break.

    Duckworth 6-7 (5-7) 2-6 4-6 Hewitt

James Duckworth exits stage left rather sharply, allowing his Aussie Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt to soak up the glory. Hewitt is retiring after this tournament remember, but not yet. Victory means he now has a second-round tie against David Ferrer, the eighth seed from Spain, to prepare for.

Duckworth poops the party with a forehand winner at the net - but the Hewitt celebrations aren't put off for long. The 34-year-old cracks a forehand winner on match point #2 - collapsing to the blue acrylic court in celebration, arms stretched out.

James Duckworth appears to have lost his head. He plants two balls into the net, then misses the line with another stray backhand. Three match points for Hewitt....

"Better serving, more aggressive with his forehand." That's why Lleyton Hewitt is only a game away from the second round now, according to GB Davis Cup captain Leon Smith on 5 live sports extra.

Hewitt bashes out a third game on the trot, entirely thanks to forced errors from his young Aussie opponent James Duckworth.

    Duckworth 6-7 (5-7) 2-6 4-4 Hewitt*

Duckworth plucks out an ace - his 14th of the match - to swat away one break point. But then he self-combusts. He looks livid with himself as a double fault gifts Hewitt a way back into this third set.

Meanwhile, Tursunov has just taken some time out for attention from his trainer to something that's causing him trouble.

If Stan doesn't run away with this now...

    *Duckworth 6-7 (5-7) 2-6 4-3 Hewitt

Turned into a strange old atmosphere in the Rod Laver Arena. It has been rather quiet as the two Australians battle it out. Most want Lleyton Hewitt to win, but also have plenty of respect for James Duckworth.

But they find their voice when a scrambling Duckworth plucks out the 'hot dog' shot, allowing Hewitt to smash in for 0-15.

That sets the platform for Hewitt to win two break back points at 15-40...

A row of blokes inside the Rod Laver Arena are wearing green and gold shirts with 'Fight Till The End Lleyton' printed on the back.

I'm sure he will. But the problem is that the 34-year-old rarely wins these days when his matches go right to the end. Hewitt has lost his last six five-setters...

Duckworth forces deuce in game seven, only for Hewitt to save his skin with an ace on the final point.

    *Duckworth 6-7 (5-7) 2-6 4-2 Hewitt

Sealed with an ace. James Duckworth spanks down an unstoppable serve, just inside the T, leaving Lleyton Hewitt flat-footed, to hold the sixth game of the final set. Hewitt did have half a glimpse of breaking back at 30-30, but couldn't convert.

Hewitt needs a comfortable hold here - and that's what he gets. Duckworth returns his serve into the net for 40-15, Hewitt wrapping up the game as a forehand return goes long.

    Duckworth 6-7 (5-7) 2-6 3-1 Hewitt*

Duckworth saves that second break point with a forehand volley - then goes to game point with his second ace of the game. Hewitt survives again with a forehand down the line, but is again pegged back by an unreturnable serve. Hewitt goes long in the next rally and the chance disappears...

    Duckworth 6-7 (5-7) 2-6 2-1 Hewitt*

Well, well, well. The Duckworth, ahem, method is not quite right. He hands a break point to Hewitt, although he redeems himself with a crashing inside-out forehand down the line for deuce.

He spanks a thunderous ace into the commentary box behind Hewitt, but then dumps a forehand off target. Hewitt takes on the ball early, inside the baseline, Duckworth going wide with an ambitious cross-court backhand. Another break point...
