    Feliciano Lopez v Dan Evans

I'll let you into a secret, I quite like Dan Evans. In a world where sporting excuse and standard post-match cliche is used all too often, he actually said this when asked about his struggles with form in 2013.

    Quote Message

"I know why. It's because I don't train hard enough and don't work hard enough day in and day out. I'm obviously pretty bad at my job. It's up to me, it's not up to anyone else.

    Dan Evans

There's something likeable about such honesty and Evans does now seem to be getting into a groove. He won through qualifying to reach the Australian Open draw for the first time. His reward is a meeting with 18th seed Feliciano Lopez.

They will go on Court 13 shortly.

  2. A loo break already?published at 01:34

    Konta v Williams

We are about to get underway on Rod Laver but Venus Williams needs a loo break before we even start.

I'll quickly take you through the other matches we will be focusing on...

  3. Venus is an inspiration - Kontapublished at 01:33

    Konta v V Williams

Johanna Konta enjoyed a memorable 2015, climbing over 100 places to 47th in the world rankings.

And in Venus Williams, she faces a childhood heroine as she bids to get 2016 off to a flyer in Melbourne.

"Venus is an inspiration to a lot of kids growing up," says 24-year-old Konta.

"I got to watch her when I was coming up and the next generation is still watching her."

  5. Konta's debutpublished at 01:31 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2016

    Konta v Williams

This is a special moment for 24-year-old Johnna Konta.

Konta, born in Sydney but based in Eastbourne, has never played in the Australian Open singles before - she tends to lose in qualifying.

In Venus Williams - eighth seed this week - a daunting prospect awaits. Williams has never won the Australian Open.

Still, the seven other Grand Slam titles and $32m (£22.5m) in prize money may come as some consolation.

    Konta v Williams

Johanna Konta and Venus Williams are out on the famous blue surface in the Rod Laver Arena. They fire some warm-up balls back and forth. Konta is in a pink vest with white shorts, Williams in a green and white dress with a visor for headwear.

I should add, Williams has some cracking looped earrings on. You could fit a tennis ball through them. Well, nearly.

    Shining lights needed

The Guardian call Novak Djokovic a "shining light" after he won through easily in round one against the back drop of controversial news within the sport.

The defending champion beat Hyeon Chung in straight sets and has been one of the first players to give his views on reports concerning match-fixing within tennis.

"From my knowledge and information about match-fixing, there is nothing happening at the top level, as far as I know," said Djokovic, adding his camp were once approached about the prospect of throwing a match.

Can the action take the limelight?

It may not have escaped your attention that the sport of tennis has had some fairly damning headlines in the last 24 hours. Not ideal when the first Grand Slam of the year is just out of the blocks.

After secret files highlight suspected match-fixing in the sport were uncovered, the Independent leads its sport offering with "Tennis in the spotlight...".

You can read more on the story by clicking here.

It's safe to say, we need some good action to at least shift the focus slightly.

    Welcome

    Roast chicken dinner

That's right folks, it's a Great British feast in Melbourne, they may as well serve up a roast dinner and be done with it.

We will see Johanna Konta charged with the task of upsetting Venus Williams, Andy Murray face an 18-year-old Alexander Zverev, Dan Evans take on Feliciano Lopez and Aljaz Bedene meet Steve Johnson.

The first three of those matches could be taking place at the same time - with Konta set to get underway any time now. Murray and Evans are not too far away, with Bedene on at around 03:00 GMT.

    So that's your card marked.
