Handily, before Lleyton Hewitt and James Duckworth appear, we're going to recap on all the headlines...

    Hewitt v Duckworth

Lleyton Hewitt and James Duckworth will be going through their final pre-match preparations in the locker room. That probably involves heading a tennis ball against the wall, or perhaps something more serious.

Those lucky enough to have tickets for the night session in the Rod Laver Arena are slowly filing in. All armed with inflatable kangaroos and wearing cork hats for this all-Australian affair. Possibly.

  3. Where's Lleyton?published at 08:23

We're still waiting for Lleyton Hewitt to start his match against fellow Australian James Duckworth. Shouldn't be long now...

  4. Verdasco 'had to go for it'published at 08:19

    Leon Smith
    Great Britain Davis Cup captain

"When you are the underdog you have to go for it. You can't back off to beat someone like Nadal. Verdasco has the game to cause anybody in the draw some significant problems. The interesting thing will be how he plays in his next match and whether he can keep his levels up."

  5. Nadal outpublished at 08:16

    Nadal 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 2-6 Verdasco

Fernando Verdasco is dead right - everything did go in. The world number 45 was swinging at everything Rafa Nadal through at him, landing an incredible 90 winners. In comparison, Rafa only won 37...

    Nadal 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 2-6 Verdasco

Fernando Verdasco after beating fifth-seed Rafa Nadal: "I played unbelievably in the fifth set. I don't know how I did it. I closed my eyes and everything went in.

"I tried to be aggressive. 2009 was maybe the only day that I hit harder. I didn't want to make the match longer than that - to win against Rafa when you're sets down is unbelievable."

    Nadal 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 2-6 Verdasco

Verdasco, rightly so, is lapping up the acclaim of the Rod Laver Arena. The 32-year-old Spaniard signs as many oversized tennis balls as he can on his way back to the locker room.

"Wasn't that one of the most thrilling final set performances we've ever seen? How he had the nerve to hit winner after winner was unbelievable. Phenomenal stuff from Verdasco. He was hitting the ball so hard."

    Leon Smith

"I cannot believe what we have just seen. The bravery Verdasco showed. It is sad to see Rafa go but it's remarkable to see the performances like Verdasco's are possible. That will have shaken up a lot of those in the locker room."

The victorious Fernando Verdasco shovels a post-match banana down his throat, just as he is asked to answer a question by on-court interviewer Jim Courier.

"It's an unbelievable feeling," he says. That's beating Nadal, not the taste of that banana.

    *Nadal 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 2-5 Verdasco

Confident stuff from Verdasco - he's flying. Nadal still has no answers to the world number 45's power. Verdasco spanks down a 215kph ace for 30-0, and after a brief Nadal revival, adds another one for 40-15.

Another crunching forehand leaves Nadal gasping for air - and gasping for a game. Verdasco firmly in control after taking four on the bounce...

    Leon Smith
Great Britain Davis Cup captain on 5 live sports extra

"Nadal is feeling a lot of pressure on these return of serves. He is so aware of what is about to come at him. Another blistering forehand from Verdasco. He simply couldn't cope with the power there."

Fernando Verdasco has hit over 80 winners in this match.

But a comfortable hold is not what Rafa gets. Verdasco volleys his way back to  15-15 and then sticks a return at the feet of Nadal, who can't dig it out.

Verdasco clips the net as the ball spins out long for 30-30, before a Nadal double fault gifts him another chance of a break...

Rafa's serve comes up trumps to force deuce...but then that sledgehammer of a Verdasco forehand reappears...and Nadal can't cope.

The Mallorcan can only shank wide the second break point and Verdasco goes a break up...

A quick chinwag with the trainer for Verdasco at the changeover. He seems to be pointing to his chest. He didn't show any signs of a problem in that last game - he looks revitalised with both backhand and forehand looking strong. Where does Rafa go from here?! A comfortable hold would be nice.
