A clenched fist as he jogs to his chair. Andy Murray disguises his backhand and then cracks it up the line to take game one of set three. A break again. Alexander Zverev walks back to his chair and tosses his racquet. It's the body language and actions of a beaten man.

Great Britain's Colin Fleming is summarising on 5 live: "I'm very surprised. You would think Dan would be holding on to his own serve a little bit more. Hopefully he can dig in and give a better account of himself in the third set."

Have a listen to this. Dan Evans lost the first set to Feliciano Lopez in 24 minutes on Court 13 and the second has just evaporated in 25 minutes.

There is a lot going wrong for Evans but the first serve is key, Lopez has won 95% of his points on first serve.

BBC Radio 5 live commentator David Law: "I do sense when Murray likes playing these young upstarts with a lot of hype around them, he likes putting them in their place."

To a huge roar, Alexander Zverev takes a game. At one point Andy Murray seemed to have an easy point at his mercy there but a very lazy lob gave it back.

Alexander Zverev splits his time between Florida in the winter and Hamburg - where he was born - during the summer.

He likes his basketball and has a particular passion for the Miami Heat.

  9. Racquet smasherpublished at 03:02

    Murray 6-1 5-1 Zverev*

For the second Andy Murray service game in a row he faces two break points.

The first is saved - or rather given back to him - as from mid-court Alexander Zverev hits a forehand over the baseline. The second point also disappears with a wild stroke and the German bounces his racquet off the floor.

Zverev is a man full of effort but living on the edge. Any point he wins is achieved with a roller-coaster ride, there's nothing routine. Another break point comes as a result of a feverish rally but Murray - in contrast his business if efficient - has too much again and despite a double fault late in the game, takes it.

    Williams 4-6 2-6

    Russell Fuller
    BBC tennis correspondent in Melbourne

"A top 10 scalp for Johanna Konta. She has beaten one of the greatest players to grace the game. By no means at her best today Venus Williams - possibly troubled by a problem with her left thigh - but take nothing away from Konta."

Venus Williams is hitting the ball with more power while Konta is struggling to get over the line, sending one backhand volley soaring out of court.

But an ace settles the Briton's nerves and then she makes Williams chase the ball to take another point.

Williams hits the line with a flashing backhand that Konta challenges unsuccessfully.

Konta pens up the angle to hit a clean winner to get to deuce but then misses a backhand with the court empty. Konta saves break point and then finds a forehand winner to set up her first match point.

And she does it - Williams hits a return into the net and that's a brilliant victory for Konta, who becomes the first Briton into the second round.

    *Lopez 6-1 0-1 Evans

Over on court 13 Dan Evans is a set down. Spain's Feliciano Lopez has started at some pace to take the opener 6-1. It's errors doing for Evans so far - 12 unforced ones have given him an uphill climb.

Andy Murray again gets a good read on Alexander Zverev and moves to his right to guide a perfect forehand across court. It's an inch out of his opponent's reach.

Good guts on show from Zverev though including one rasping forehand across court. The teenager clenches his fist and has two break points. The first goes - exquisite drop shot from Murray - the second goes too - Murray's serve can't be returned.

It's relentless stuff and the two-time Grand Slam champion meets his first test of the Australian Open admirably. Four-straight points puts him a set and 3-1 up.

    Williams 4-6 2-5 Konta*

Venus Williams rattles through her service game, completing the hold with an ace and that's another game on the board for the American.

Can Johanna Konta follow and secure the hold of serve she needs to wrap up victory?

    *Williams 4-6 1-5 Konta

Venus Williams hits into the net and shakes her head in frustration. She's being outplayed but then finds a forehand into the corner that Konta cannot get back to spark applause from the crowd.

A double fault from Konta puts Williams ahead in this game and then the American steps in to put away a short backhand from Konta to set up two break points.

Williams finishes a rally by slapping away a backhand from the back of the court. Not much foot movement - case of stand and deliver as her leg seems to be restricting her footwork.

Surely too late for a proper fightback though?

He's at world number 83 at the age of 18.

His 1997 birthday makes me feel old. R kelly's 'I believe I can fly' was number one in the UK charts in the week Zverev was born.

    *Lopez 5-1 Evans

It is not starting too well for Dan Evans over on court 13. He has won just 58% of points on his serve and trails in the opening set. Lopez has won every point on his first serve.

It looks as if the Briton will have to clear the slate and come out fighting in set two.
