  1. *Djokovic 6-1 6-2 2-3 Federerpublished at 09:54 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2016

Djokovic fences a forehand return wide after a smart serve down the middle, before Federer sends a forehand smash long. Federer rushes the net and Djokovic outfoxes him with a return on his laces. And what a shot this is, Federer at the net again and the Serb beats him with an angled forehand. But that's exceptional net play from Federer to save, finished off with an overhead. This time Federer is succesful with a forehand smash-volley before Djokovic nets with a forehand. Federer holds. But, my word, was it a struggle.

"It's been so one-sided. Aside from that Nadal match at the French Open in 2008 I can't remember Federer getting a worse beating."

  5. *Djokovic 6-1 6-2 1-2 Federerpublished at 09:47 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2016

Federer having more success in this set and he holds again courtesy of a forehand volley into the open court. Big cheers from a packed Rod Laver Arena, but if Federer listens hard enough he'll detect the irony...

  6. Djokovic 6-1 6-2 1-1 Federer*published at 09:44 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2016

It will be interesting to hear what both players say after this - will Djokovic admit that this is the best he's ever played, and will Federer admit that's the best anyone has ever played against him? Nice work from Federer at the net, lunging and flipping over a backhand volley. It was so good, even Djokovic gave him a round of applause. Federer makes the most of a rare framed shot from Djokovic, putting away a backhand winner, but Djokovic hits back with his fifth ace to hold. Damn your impudence...

Tennis writers across the globe will be rifling through their mental Rolodexes trying to think of a better individual performances than this. One immediately thinks of John McEnroe marmalising Jimmy Connors 6-1 6-1 6-2 in the 1984 Wimbledon final. In those first two sets, Djokovic won 56 points to 27 but Federer does win the first game in the third, with serve.

"The thing that's let Federer down today is his serve. He's playing horrible tennis, but he's not being allowed to play well, because Djokovic is playing out of his mind."

Abhijeet Vardhan: A very uncomfortable viewing for Federer fans... Novak is in Godlike mode!

James Taylor: I fear for Murray if he gets through to the final if this is the way Djokovic is going to play. He's coming close to perfection.

  12. Game and second set - Djokovic 6-1 6-2 Federer*published at 09:35 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2016

Apologies for that Sisyphus reference in the previous entry, it didn't quite work and needed time that I don't have. That's a hold to love, and a 32-minute set.

  13. *Djokovic 6-1 5-2 Federerpublished at 09:33 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2016

The only chance Federer has of winning this is if Djokovic's flux capacitor overheats, or whatever it is these modern cyborg tennis players are fitted with. Federer claws his way to 40-30 only for Djokovic to pick him off with a backhand down the line. Federer nets with a forehand to hand Djokovic set point but the Swiss saves with an overhead.

Oh, do come on. Djokovic pings a forehand winner down the line for another break point but Federer finds a solid first serve to save again. Another decent first serve to nick the advantage and he pulls out another one to hold.

Like Sisyphus, Federer could be forgiven for looking behind him as he makes his way to his stool, in case a boulder starts careering towards him.

"Djokovic is playing very cleverly. Federer is not troubled by the hard stuff, the bam-bam rallies, but as soon as Djokovic changes the pace a bit, he's mistiming it."

  16. Djokovic 6-1 5-1 Federer*published at 09:26 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2016

As it stands, this will go down as one of the greatest performances in tennis history, if not the greatest. Djokovic has won 93% of points on first serve, and that figure nudges up a touch as he moves into a 15-0 lead. Djokovic makes it 30-0 courtesy of a backhand, cross-court winner, before going long with a forehand. Federer knifes a backhand into the net before being outlasted in a baseline rally. Chastening, Federer must feel like crying. Or laughing. One of the two.

"Djokovic is absolutely on fire. How do you go from making 100 unforced errors in a match to giving away almost nothing? The only thing Roger Federer can do is hope Djokovic cools down."

Dez Kamara: Fed is not moving crisply at all. It seems always after a good game, he gets tired some sort. But he will fight to the end.

  19. *Djokovic 6-1 4-1 Federerpublished at 09:22 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2016

This is getting a bit daft now. Djokovic finishes off another lengthy exchange with a clipped forehand winner before outfoxing the rushing Federer with a dipping backhand return. Deary me, Federer is getting smashed to smithereens out there, and it's not pretty to watch.
