A ray of hope for Radwanska, who is forcing Williams to move side to side and gets her rewards in the form of a 0-30 lead. Could she? Surely not.

Errors trickling from Williams' racquet, a clumsy forehand into the tramlines which misses by miles, then she nets a routine forehand to present her rival with two break points.

An ace! There's always an ace... One break point wiped out. What's next? A forehand into the tape and Williams is broken! Whoops from the crowd. Williams has lost her focus.

Hello there, Radwanska collects three unanswered points for a 40-0 lead. A backhand dropper from Radwanska on the next point, but Williams is at the net at lightning speed. The Pole attempts to see off her rival with an overhead, but Williams swats it away as if it were a fly.

But this is comfortably Radwanska's easiest service game, holding to 15 to at least stay within touching distance of her opponent.

Williams has won 93% of her service games in this tournament and 100% in this match. Razor-sharp serving again from the American and Radwanska's mind is all of a muddle. A hold to 15.

A second double fault of the match from Radwanska and she can ill afford those. Danger signs everywhere the Pole looks as the top seed forces her into a cul de sac, a 0-30 lead and it could be curtains.

One of the lengthier rallies of the game, but still Radwanska can't get a stranglehold and she nets, gifting Williams two break points. More joy at the net from Williams. It's clear how this is going to end.

  5. Williams 6-0 1-1 Radwanska*published at 03:16 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2016

Williams has made more errors in this set than she probably did in the entirety of the first. A backhand volley is slapped into the tape and Williams is 15-30 down on her own serve.

Radwanska's eyes light up on the next serve, but she blooters her return wide and Williams refocuses from there on in - an ace and a big second serve which allows her to volley home.

  6. *Williams 6-0 0-1 Radwanskapublished at 03:12 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2016

Radwanska only made three unforced errors in the first set, but Williams kept the points short and sharp by stepping forwards and unleashing venomous winners.

Can the Pole claw her way back from the brink? A growl from Williams as she screws a return wide, allowing her opponent a rare 30-15 lead. The Pole's second serve are free points for Williams, though, as the American is almost always able to prowl forward and club winners.

Better serving from the Pole, though, and she holds to 30, much to the delight of the spectators who at least want  value for their money.

    Williams 6-0 Radwanska*

After just 19 minutes, Williams is serving for the set. The world number one is fearsome around the net in this game, leaving Radwanska with little opportunity to ignite rallies from the back of the court A hold to love and this one-way traffic.

The statistics don't make nice reading for those in Radwanska's camp. The fourth seed has, in three service games, only won four points. Williams, meanwhile, has won 75% points on the return. It's impressive to watch simply for Williams' ruthless efficiency.

  10. Williams 4-0 Radwanska*published at 03:01 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2016

It's becoming clear why Radwanska has never beaten Williams in eight previous meetings. The Pole, despite her guile and flare, hasn't enough power to go toe-to-toe with the top seed.

There's a canny forehand winning return from the fourth seed, which is greeted by warm applause from the spectators, followed by an iffy Williams forehand to level at 30-30, but there's never a hint that Radwanska will truly rattle her opponent.

Williams steps up, clubbing another clean winner, and on the next point the Pole nets and the American marches on.

    *Williams 3-0 Radwanska

Williams has begun this match as if she were a comic hero: Pow - a colossal winning return; Kerboom - a smashing volley; Boom - another wonderful return.

The world number one is a formidable opponent on an average day, but in this sort of mood she's unplayable.

The court full of colour: cobalt blue surface, Radwanska in an eye-catching pink dress, Williams in a daffodil yellow crop top and skirt.

The tennis? Oh, yeah. Brute strength from Williams, stepping in frequently from the baseline, striking crunching winners. The American is sharp, the feet are dancing, a hold to 15 and Radwanska is up against it.

    *Williams 1-0 Radwanska

It is Radwanska who will serve first.

Williams misses a simple overhead but makes up for it with a super driving volley, pouncing on a weak second serve, and she's overpowering her opponent already.

The Radwanska serve lacking the pace to cause any damage and Williams collects two break points with ease, achieving it with a clinical winning backhand return. Blimey.

  14. Radwanska the underdogpublished at 02:45 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2016

Much is known about Serena Williams, a 21-time Grand Slam winner, but what about her opponent, Agnieszka Radwanska?

The world number four hasn't got a great record against the world number one. On the only previous occasion she reached a Grand Slam final (Wimbledon in 2012) she was beaten by Williams in three sets.

It was the only time the Pole has won a set against the American in eight meetings.

  15. Williams v Radwanska to start soonpublished at 02:43 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2016

The players are going through the final stages of their warm-up. They've been told by the umpire that they only have two minutes remaining until it's business time.

It's a rainy day in Melbourne which means the roof is closed and indoor conditions will probably make Williams' serve an even mightier weapon.

  16. Williams v Radwanskapublished at 02:41 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2016

How to topple the world number one, to see off one of the game's greats? It's a question Agnieszka Radwanska has been asking herself over the last 24 hours. Hopefully she has come up with a number of answers.

The first semi-final promises to be a fascinating one as the Polish fourth seed, a thinker, the women's game's great defender, takes on the reigning champion, a woman whose brute force on the court is unequalled. Will brain or brawn prevail?
