    Murray/Soares 1-1 2-6 Nestor/Stepanek*

    Simon Briggs
Daily Telegraph tennis correspondent on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"There's a couple of thousand in here. It's a bit sparse.

"Would there been any more in here if it was on before the major event? I doubt it. I think more people would have stayed on after."

  2. Murray/Soares 2-6 1-1 Nestor/Stepanek*published at 12:26 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2016

This is hard, hard going for Murray and Soares. This time it's the Scot who is under pressure on serve, although he holds on from 30-30. The rain is apparently hammering down in Melbourne but the crowd under the Rod Laver roof is still sparse. Quie a nice morning in Salford, in case you were wondering.

Nestor and Stepanek take first set

    Mike Dickson
Daily Mail tennis correspondent on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"The bottom line is Soares has got to serve better and his volley has got to be more incisive.

"When Murray was playing with Jon Peers, Jon was the weaker of the two. And so far we're seeing that again today.

"But they are playing two very experienced players."

  4. Murray*/Soares 2-6 0-1 Nestor/Stepanekpublished at 12:20 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2016

Nestor holds at the start of the second, no dramas. He turned professional in 1991! The year Michael Stich won Wimbledon and Bryan Adams enchanted/bored to within an inch of its life a nation with his smash hit "(Everything I do) I do it for you". (Stepanek turned pro in 1996 - Richard Krajicek/Spice Girls "Wannabe").

  5. Murray/Soares 2-6 Nestor*/Stepanekpublished at 12:17 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2016

Ouch. Soares is having a bit of a shocker, dropping serve again and with it the set - handing it over with a double fault. Murray needs to pick his man up if they are to get back into this.

    Murray/Soares 2-4 Nestor/Stepanek*

    Mike Dickson
Daily Mail tennis correspondent on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"So far, there's not much sign of them breaking Nestor and Stepanek.

"Stepanek is going to be the easier of the two to break, and they're probably going to have two more chances."

  9. Murray/Soares 2-4 Nestor/Stepanek*published at 12:07 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2016

Stepanek challenges a Murray serve, which Hawkeye suggests landed plum on the service line. Stepanek glares down at the offending spot, on the court, disgusted. Murray looks to have taken the game with an ace but this time Hawkeye goes against him. No matter, another leaping smash does the job.

Kerber wins Australian Open women's singles title

More reaction to Angelique Kerber's Australian Open win over world number one Serena Williams...

  11. Murray*/Soares 1-4 Nestor/Stepanekpublished at 12:00 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2016

There's a "C'mon!" from Murray as the pair make early inroads and Nestor finally shows a bit of fragility with a first volley into the net for deuce. Soares then sneaks one onto the baseline that Nestor leaves and it's break point.... but Soares sticks his return in the bottom of the net. Nestor holds, after a ball kid takes a fine low catch and grins from ear to ear. Showboating.

  12. Murray/Soares 1-3 Nestor*/Stepanekpublished at 11:55 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2016

Murray leaps impressively to put away a smash, Samprasesque, but the pair are under pressure again at 30-30. Nestor pounces when Soares offers up a tame volley off a second serve, and the Canadian batters away with his forehand on break point... but the Murray/Soares wall stands firm and the Brazilian swats away a smash.

Another break point arrives moments later though, and this time Stepanek converts some more good work from his partner. First blood to the Canadian/Czech team.

  14. Murray/Soares* 1-2 Nestor/Stepanekpublished at 11:47 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2016

Stepanek holds easily enough, although finds the time for a first glare of the day after being called for a foot-fault. The nerve of these people!

  15. "Stepanek's the best"published at 11:45 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2016

    Mike Dickson
Daily Mail tennis correspondent on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"Of all these four, the one with the most calibre is Stepanek. He's got a good singles history. I've seen him do the hardest thing in tennis and win the decisive rubber in a Davis Cup match against Spain."

  16. Murray/Soares 1-1 Nestor/Stepanek*published at 11:45 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2016

It's the old guard who are dominating early on, Stepanek clambering all over a tasty shoulder-high volley to earn two break points. Nestor just catches the tape with a half-volley on the first, and Murray slams a big serve down the T on the second. A good hold in the end.

Nestor gets us underway and the duo move into a 30-0 lead

Soares nabs a point but Nestor's serve is too strong. They wrap up the service game to 15.

Kerber wins Australian Open women's singles title

Serena Williams, a surprise runner-up in the women's singles, is speaking to the media after Angelique Kerber stole her Australian Open crown.

"I think I did the best I could today. Would I give my performance an A? No. But this is all I could produce today," said the 21-time Grand Slam champion.

"Every time I walk in this room I'm expected to win. I'm not a robot. I do the best that I can. I try to win every point but realistically I can't. Maybe someone else can."

The finalists are out on court - Jamie Murray has already had a knock on Rod Laver this morning, although he had to shove Andy off as his  elder brother prepares for Sunday's singles final against Novak Djokovic.

  20. Old faces, new pairingpublished at 11:28 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2016

It's fair to say that the opposition will have experience on their side today - Daniel Nestor and Radek Stepanek have a combined age of 80, with the Canadian a sprightly 43 and the Czech a spring chicken at 37. Like Murray/Soares, they are a new pairing for this year.
