  1. *Williams 1-3 Kerberpublished at 08:56 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2016

Hummm..Williams is not hitting her lines very well in the opening stages.

Another return goes long and Kerber takes a 30-15.

But a beautiful, clean back-hand into the corner snatches a point for the American.

However, Kerber keeps her service game with a strong but steady lob down court.

  2. Williams 1-2 Kerber*published at 08:52 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2016

Kerber receives a round of applause from Williams and the rest of the arena after a superb low back-hand return which gives her a 15-30 lead.

And now it's break point to the German!

A steady rally ensues and as Williams goes for the kill, she hits a forehand return long.

    Kerber breaks. Who predicted that?!

  3. *Williams 1-1 Kerberpublished at 08:49 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2016

A nervy first serve from Kerber is long...but she gets the second in and Williams can't return. Phew, a point on the board.

A few were worried about the German's serve but she's prodded an ace down the centre and takes the game. Nice work so far.

Just the 15 bounces before Williams finally gets the game underway. She wins the point with a lovely volley for 15-0.

Two long shots from Kerber over the baseline, and she's then unable to return from a Williams serve. Williams holds to love.

  6. 'Her serve is a bit of an issue'published at 08:42 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2016

    Leon Smith
    Great Britain Davis Cup captain

"Kerber's always been a very good athlete. She's very, very quick, stays low to the ground and has extremely strong legs. She's a classic counter-puncher and her serve is a bit of an issue, but she gets away with it because she's a lefty and it stays low and slides away. I would expect to see Serena crunch the second serve, but also really go after the first serve."

...And the players are coming out as well to some thumping pop-dance tunes. Angelique Kerber looks a little overwhelmed by the occasion, but this is second-nature to Serena Williams.

  12. What can Kerber do?published at 08:31

Standing in the way of Williams and her record-equalling 22nd Grand Slam title is Angelique Kerber.

The German 27-year-old is contesting the first Grand Slam final of her career, having previously reached two semi-finals at 2011 US Open and 2012 Wimbledon.

Like Williams, she is bidding to out-do a Steffi Graf record. Graf was the last German woman to win a Grand Slam singles title in 1999.

    They're coming for you, Steffi.

Serena Williams is pretty good at this tennis malarkey, isn't she?

The 34-year-old is a record six-time Australian Open singles champion, and she hasn't lost in a Grand Slam final since 2011.

Has she got room in the trophy cabinet for a couple more?
