We're 25 minutes in and Watson is serving to stay in the set.

Kuznetsova steals the first point but lets out a scream as she hits the net with a return. 15-15.

Watson remains on her baseline and somehow dinks the ball over the net with the lightest touch. A great shot.

She tries the same again at 40-30, but Kuznetsova is smart to it this time. Deuce.

The Russian earns the advantage - a break and set point - and she wraps it up.

    Kuznetsova 5-1 Watson*

Anyone want to hold their serve at some point, ladies? I'm tired of writing the b word.

Two smashing overhead volleys (literally) see Kuznetsova take a 30-0 lead.

Heather Watson responds with a nice backhand down the left.

But Kuznetsova holds her serve to take a 5-1 lead.

    *Kuznetsova 4-1 Watson

Some proper grunting coming from Svetlana Kuznetsova now. Is she a bit rattled?

    Erm, in a word, no.

Two break points to the Russian and she smashes a volley to take the game.

  4. Watson breaks backpublished at 10:29 British Summer Time 25 May 2016

    Kuznetsova 3-1 Watson*

Hummm....a double fault from Kuznetsova. Time for Watson to pounce.

Three break points to the British number two.

A back-hand winner from the Russian leaves two break points remaining.

But now the 30-year-old hits into the net and Watson gets off the mark!

"This is a pretty tough task for Watson. Kuznetsova would be my outside tip in a very open women's field. I saw her play in Miami where she got to the final and she looked like she had her mojo back.

"She's a former winner here, she's only 30, looks fit and motivated and has all the ingredients to make a long run."

  6. Double break for Kuznetsovapublished at 10:25 British Summer Time 25 May 2016

    *Kuznetsova 3-0 Watson

A pulsating forehand winner from Kuznetsova sees Heather Watson lose the first point on her serve.

The 13th seed earns a break point at 30-40, but it's saved by Watson.

Watson has the advantage, loses it, and now it's advantage Kuznetsova.

And the Russian's perfect start continues - she secures a double break with another beauty of a forehand.

    Kuznetsova 2-0 Watson*

Heavily tattooed 30-year-old Svetlana Kuznetsova bashes her racquet on her heels as she prepares for her first service game.

A brilliant rally ensues, with both women pinned to their baseline stretching from side to side.

The Russian come out on top and she moves 40-15 ahead, and soon holds her serve.

"Heather Watson can beat Kuznetsova but she needs to play at a consistently high level. She has been starting fast in her matches and will need to do that today against such a high-calibre opponent."

  9. Kuznetsova breakspublished at 10:14 British Summer Time 25 May 2016

    *Kuznetsova 1-0 Watson

Watson has a shaky start on her service game.

A wonderful down-the-line back hand sees her level 30-30, but she then hits long past the baseline to hand Kuznetsova a break point, and the Russian snatches it.

"Kuznetsova has been in terrific form this year, beating Serena Williams in Miami and reaching the final. She won her 16th career title in Sydney at the beginning of the year and will be quite an opponent for Heather Watson."

    French Open 2016

It was a stop-start-stop-start first round for Heather Watson thanks to the pesky rain.

But eventually - over two days - she came past Nicole Gibbs of the US in three sets to progress to the second round.

Her opponenttoday Svetlana Kuznetsova - who won the title in Paris in 2009 - also went to three sets in her first round match against fellow Russian Yaroslava Shvedova.

    French Open 2016

As previously mentioned, both Heather Watson and Andy Murray are in action today in the second round of the competition.

Fellow Brit Kyle Edmund is also involved. The 21-year-old will face John Isner - the American 15th seed - this afternoon. The pair are third on court 14.

Aljaz Bedene is also through and plays on Thursday, meaning there are three British men in the second round at Roland Garros for the first time since 1975.

Alas, we are down on numbers since yesterday.

Johanna Konta and Laura Robson both went out in the first round without winning a set, leaving Watson as the only British female remaining.
