    Bedene 1-2 Carreno Busta*

Aljaz Bedene puts the scoreboard operator to work for the first time as he holds his serve in relative comfort.

While the players take a seat and a sip, why not nip over to the ATP site where you can watch this interesting little video featurette on Bedene and his pop star fiancee Kimalie.

    *Bedene 0-2 Carreno Busta

Pablo Carreno Busta backs up the break with a hold to 15.

This is going to hard labour - think the tennis equivalent of rock-breaking in Siberia - if Aljaz Bedene is to break down the Spaniard.

    Bedene 0-1 Carreno Busta*

Aljaz Bedene socks a lovely pure forehand winner down the line for 15-15, but the British number two is under the pump immediately as Carreno Busta - fetching from the far corners and hitting with nagging depth - forces two early break points.

He is one straight out of the Spanish mould - a durable streetfighter of a clay-courter with rock-solid groundstrokes.

Bedene nets and he has ground to make up already in this opening set.

    Bedene v Busta Carreno

It is a murky old morning in the French capital - the Eiffel Tower shrouded in cloud like Gauloises smoke.

But the covers are off, as are Aljaz Bedene's tracksuit bottoms.

The British number two has strode onto Court Six and looks cool, calm and collected.

And what a third-round debut it is likely to be for the winner of this match.

Presuming that the Novak Djokovic juggernaut squashes Steve Darcis, either Bedene or Carreno Busta will face the world number one on one of the French Open's big stages.

That will be a shot to nothing for either man and a chance to test themselves against the very best.

Standing in the way of the British number two and breaking more new ground - third-round style - is the Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta.

Two years younger than Bedene at 24, and 23 places higher at 43 in the world.

Sobering fact of the day, that world ranking is only good enough to make him the Spanish number five.

This is his first meeting with Bedene.

    Good morning.

When Aljaz Bedene turned up at Roland Garros in 2012 he was ranked 138th in the world. He lost in the second round of qualifying.

In 2013, he was 80th in the world and lost in the first round of the main draw in straight sets.

In 2015, he was 75th in the world and lost in the first round over four sets.

In 2016, he is 66th in the world and into the second round for the first time in his career.

Even those at the back, can see the trend here.
