Andy Murray nicks the first point. Novak Djokovic's stare is fixed somewhere around 1000 yards.

Murray nets a backhand on the next. 15-15.

Djokovic slides a drop-shot reply back across court - like a dagger between the ribs. 30-15.

"There is still life in this match. You expect Djokovic to come up with couple of big serves. But he is human, and this is a title he has wanted so desperately. If Murray can force Djokovic into a rash drop shot, anything is possible here."

Andy Murray is playing devil-mare-care tennis.

His situation is so apparently hopeless that he is slugging free and easy from the baseline, without the pressure that seemed to jam up his racquet arm in the last two and half sets.

The same cannot be said for Novak Djokovic. He overcooks a forehand needlessly from middle of the court and with time to think.

A brute of an inside-out forehand seals the game for Murray.

    Over to you Nole...

Serve out to seal the title, or drop serve to really set nerves jangling...

5 Live commentator Philip Studd: "That was inspirational tennis from Murray. Even Djokovic, robotic in his accuracy and relentless consistency, must be feeling a few nerves."

Andy Murray sticks a spanner in the spokes with a brilliant tickle across court and a wrong-footing backhand against the grain.

    15-30.

That scoreboard asks the question: Any jitters in those top inches Novak?

A double fault comes as the reply. Two break points.

Murray converts the first with an zippy backhand.

Where has this guy been for an hour and a half?

Novak Djokovic's coach Marian Vajda claps like a seal.

    Three break points at 0-40.

His man seals the first with a forehand whipped into open court.

The crowd roar and the Serb allows himself a sliver of a smile as he heads back to his stool.

He serves for the title next.

Tom: With what will be an 80% loss rate in slam finals, Murray needs to hire a psychologist not a coach.

Novak Djokovic closes in on victory and title with the certainty of a streamroller.

Andy Murray has a chance to lob at 15-0, but can only pattercake a ball onto the Serb's forehand.

A swish, a swat and the ball flashes away for a winner.

    A hold to love.

Federer or Djokovic: who's the better overall player? I wouldn't like to call it. Incredible talent and precision when they're at their best. Mesmerising.

"To win this match Murray needed to get free points like he did against Wawrinka. We knew they were't going to come as frequently as they did in the semi-final, but they've completely dried up."

Novak Djokovic spreads himself across court with the speed of head lice through a primary-school class.

The Serb very nearly pats back a lob winner on break point as he somehow reads Murray's intentions to go across court from the front court.

The ball floats long though and Andy Murray lives to fight a little longer in this fourth set.

There is no shame in it against Novak Djokovic, but Andy Murray is playing like a man who is already mentally through his media duties, showered and home.

He offers up a dolly of a forehand volley when there is space either side of Novak Djokovic to find.

A double fault takes him to deuce and more dark places.

Richard Luck: Murray's big flaw? That's he's up against perhaps the greatest player in the history of the game. There's no lack of commitment.

Andrew Weller: Such a shame, a big point and consistent serve and Murray would have loads more majors. Novak is awesome.

"We were looking at that first set thinking 'What has gone wrong with Djokovic?' He was missing routine forehands and Murray was well on top. But he didn't break in the first game of the second set, and Djokovic has dominated ever since."

Novak Djokovic doesn't have to worry about the Andy Murray serve though.

With the break already bagged in the fourth, the Serb is only four service holds away from sealing this Roland Garros deal.

    Make that three.

No signs of weakness or wobble as the world number one holds to love and stretches Murray out of shape like an old jumper on the baseline.

"Come on. let's go," shouts Andy Murray as he watches Novak Djokovic put too much string on a forehand.

His entourage in his players' box are replying with gripped fists and jabbing fingers.

Can that encouragement fire something from the embers?

Andy Murray wins a bit of cat and mouse at the net to move 40-15 up. Those exchanges have usually crumbled the way of the world number one this afternoon.

But Novak Djokovic has been king in all areas of the court today.

A whipped pass, lassoed in from out wide on the forehand side, takes the game to deuce.

Edward Ditchfield: Murray's big flaw is he wastes too much mental energy whinging about stuff in tight moments, rather than channeling that anger.

Raj Sidhu: Wish the Murray haters would watch this game, there's no shame to being second best to someone like Djokovic.
