    Williams 6-3 Beck

Annika Beck has the Centre Court crowd on their feet as she dashes from one side of the grass to the other at break-neck speed to fly over a forehand winner. How did she get that?!

It fends off a Serena Williams break and she holds serve.

However, it's not long before Williams slams an ace down court to hold to love and take the first set.

    Andrew Castle

Annika Beck came back against Heather Watson to win. When you have looked at defeat, it gives you a strengthening feeling.

How is she going to threaten Serena when the going gets tough? She has to rely on Serena making mistakes.

Serena Williams is very much in control. She is so tough. Even when she loses the serve at the beginning of the match, she is able to break back very quickly. The timing of her serve is absolutely perfect.

Karen Turner: For such an incredibly accomplished player, it's wonderful how grounded a person Roger Federer is. Pure class & complete gentleman.

Chris Thornton: I'll always support Murray, but Federer is extremely difficult to not love. Exceptional tennis player / nice guy / great hair.

  7. 'Djokovic loss was a huge surprise'published at 13:28 British Summer Time 3 July 2016

    BBC Two

Roger Federer speaking to Sue Barker:

"With all the interruptions I didn't see all of Novak's match. It was clearly a huge surprise. I played Sam last year and I thought he was very dangerous.

"You could always maybe think Sam might have a chance in a set or two but I didn't pick him to win, especially with Novak's method.

"Now is a time to take a step back and see what an incredible performance Novak has had in the last year. He does sometimes give you chances to close him out but not many guys can do it. Sam was able to.

"I’m sure this is just a hiccup for Novak. As long as he is healthy he will be unbelievably tough to beat."

    Jana Novotna

Annika Beck is doing really well and is very much in charge at this point. I'm sure she is feeling a bit nervous. Anyone playing Serena Williams at this stage of the tournament would. But she seems very well and must be feeling pretty good about her chances right now.

    S.Williams 1-2 Beck*

Serena Williams has break point on Annika Beck's first service game, but the German manages to take it to deuce before holding out.

A double fault on Williams' service game leaves the pair on 30-30, and then the defending champion slams a backhand long to hand Beck a break point.

It looks like she's dished out another double fault, but Williams is right with a Hawkeye challenge.

However, Beck does eventually nab the game. A great start for the world number 43, who is making her debut on Centre Court.

    BBC Two

Roger Federer speaking to Sue Barker:

"My first Wimbledon is the title I'm most proud of. Without that one, who knows where my career was going to go?

"All of a sudden it all picked up and all made sense to me. When I won that final point it was the most beautiful moment of my life a a tennis player.

"The win over Pete Sampras is still the most important and beautiful match I've played but it didn't have the golden trophy at the end!"

"It was a fun first week, especially with the match against Marcus Willis.

"It was very cool, I loved the story and I loved his reactions and how the match went. He had a lot of pressure not to win games. I always knew he would win games.

"I had to prepare myself in a way that I knew he would be a top 50 player. I loved that he soaked it up. He really enjoyed it and he played great tennis.

"He toyed with me! It was a great atmosphere to bring to Centre Court. He has a great serve and I couldn't read it. I just tried to stay aggressive."
