Definitely deserved. Stan played incredible tennis. He really picked his game up at the end of that fist set and started playing much better as this match went on. It was an incredible match from Wawrinka.

The pair are glued to the baseline as they scurry left and right, their footwork a function of years of honed muscle memory. Stan Wawrinka opens up the one-handed backhand but his ball lands six inches wide and hang on... that's 0-30 down on his serve.

A bullet serve sees Novak Djokovic offer little. Another serve, this time 117mph, draws a tame backhand into the net. That's 30-30, two points, just two points.  A big point now, a brief rally, five strokes, the ball is in the net on Djokovic's side.

    Championship point.

A choppy Wawrinka forehand fizzes into the net. Oh Stan, if you don't close this out that may haunt you.

A backhand is sublime from Wawrinka, Djokovic returns. A forehand is sublime, Djokovic returns to leave a simple smash. Championship point two.

The pair trade, the silence is deafening and a Djokovic backhand is long. Stan is very much the man.

Sarah Kenny: That Djovokic can still win points while he's literally hobbling is quite incredible

Dennis Ethan: The only problem is Stan Wawrinka peaking so late in his career. He would have win a couple of titles before 2014 AO.

Novak Djokovic is such a fighter and he didn't get to number one in the world for nothing so he's still going to fight. Wawrinka is going to have to finish this match out and he's going to have to win it. When you're injured you're definitely going to try to hit a winner almost from the first shot.

Novak Djokovic serve, 100mph, tickled back to him and an easy volley is left for 15-0. A seventh double fault - Stan Wawrinka has made just three - brings up 15-15.

Wawrinka chases wide to flick a forehand back and races back into the court only to be wrong footed cleverly by the Serb. A lobbed backhand from Wawrinka leaves an easy smash for the game to be sealed.

That was a formality, it's all about this service game. After two weeks of play, this could be it...

If you have that problem, it's not damaging to your health, he's managed it for a certain amount of time, I don't think it'd be unreasonable to say to him 'I'm sorry, I know you're hurting but you're going to have to wait until the change of ends'.

More treatment from the trainer courtside for Novak Djokovic. His big toe is out again and it's bloodied. As he waits for a dressing you can see the toe shaking. He's in clear pain. We can talk gamesmanship, delaying tactics, whatever, there's no doubt he's hurt. He's now very close to being hurt emotionally too as the man stood limbering up some 15ft away is full of beans and closing in on glory. Over to you Stan...

It looks like the trainer is just adding some more tape and every single time the trainer is doing something, Djokovic is jumping around. He's in a lot of pain. This is really bad luck.

I think Djokovic knows he has no chance in this match now, his body betraying him.

What an opening point in this seventh game in the fourth as the pair trade from the baseline and then just mix it up with a drop shot apiece. Stan Wawrinka wins the war, dropping one across court, the ball flicking the net on its way.

Wawrinka raises his racquet to apologise for his fortune. I don't think he cares. We reach 40-0 as Djokovic clunks one into the net and he hobbles off to receive another serve but just knows that this set is going 5-2 and Wawrkina promptly ensures that's the case.

Another quick game. Wawrinka is four points from an upset.

A 111mph serve to the body from Novak Djokovic brings up a tame reply into the net from Stan Wawrinka and he doesn't seem too interested in this service game. He's perhaps in conserve energy mode now, just two more service holds and he will win a third Grand Slam.

Novak takes the game to love.

Mark Adamoulas: Total lack of class from Novak getting the trainer out before receiving serve. Losing dignity out there, poor.

Abu Ali: Federer or Nadal would never take a MTO for a hurt toe at such a key moment! One of the reasons why Djoko isn't as adored!

He's a little red-faced about it, he's trying to keep poker faced, but what he's thinking is that if Djokovic wasn't allowed a trainer he would have held easily. But if you get the W you don't remember anything that was bothering you in the tournament and that's where Stan is right now. He's willing to stomach his pride right now to get the championship.

Again Stan Wawrinka defended the break point, he's getting used to it now, that's 14 of 17 saved today. A solid serve and a long Novak Djokovic forehand brings up game point and Wawrinka runs around a Djokovic return to set up a forehand winner and close out the game. At last we got there.

We reach three hours and 36 minutes. What do we know? Novak is not going to give this up. Wawrinka will have to earn these critical points at the finish.

An ace for 30-0 on the Stan Wawrinka serve. You can see the Novak Djokovic movement is just not quite fluid. He's conscious of that toe you feel. The Serb dives at a serve to get it back but he's stranded, is this 40-0? No. Sloppy from Wawrinka who hits the tape.

A glimmer of hope for Djokovic and he draws level at 30-30, a huge point now. Djokovic connects with a heavy backhand across court, he moves into the middle of the court to exert pressure and flicks a forehand to the same place, that is break point.

My goodness, can he recover from treatment in the best way possible? Not if Stan the man has his way as he makes a rare foray to the net to finish with a volley, prompting a fist pump.

Will Wawrinka tie up himself as he gets close to the finish line? He saves another break point, that's three out of 16 he's saved now. Djokovic is not going to fold though, curling a forehand up the line to set up a third break point of this game...

Was that gamesmanship? Was Novak Djokovic thinking he had to halt the Stan Wawrinka momentum with a little break?

Here we go again on the Wawrinka serve.

Lap it up folks, a thriller and a soap opera.

This is definitely going to break the momentum Wawrinka has. It will only help Djokovic, help him break Wawrinka's rhythm and also give him time to physically recover as he didn't look in good shape.

"It's only supposed to be when he's serving", Stan Wawrinka says to the official as Novak Djokovic gets treatment 10ft away.

Wawrinka starts putting himself through a rigorous stretching routine. He's warming the groins as he dances on the spot, waiting for his rival to get a toe patched up.

    "Stan, sorry man," says Djokovic.
