Leonardo DiCaprio is in the posh seats, watching this Titanic battle (see what I did there? I think my work is done here...) Much debate going on among my colleagues about the headwear the celebrities at Flushing Meadows have chosen for this final.

Anyway, back to the tennis. A cool ace helps Wawrinka level to 30-30, but an andrenalized forehand bounces long and Djokovic earns a break back point.

The Serb wipes his mouth with the back of his hand, as if to say "give me all you've got, punk." But the Serb is making far too many errors, a netted forehand and we're back to deuce. - that's another break point saved by Wawrinka - his 10th of this match. Gravel for guts.

At advantage Djokovic thinks he's worked his opponent into a cul de sac, but Wawrinka conjures a jaw-droppingly good backhand winner and the Swiss is orbiting another level. Stonkingly good tennis.

There is no doubt that the world number one's form has dipped from the highs of the first set. Wawrinka hitting hard and accurately. At 30-30 the Swiss has a chance to turn the screw early in this set - a down-the-line winner from the world number three, leaving Djokovic stranded by the net, and Djokovic needs to defend a break point.

Djokovic sprints to the net... Wawrinka attempts to pass him... but he doesn't need to because the Serb botches a volley, it sails wide, and Wawrinka is in control.

Djokovic's eyes widen, oodles of time to thump a forehand into the corner for a third break point. Another lengthy rally... nervy... a baseline slug-fest... Wawrinka holding firm though as Djokovic falters. Deuce again. A menacing body serve from Wawrinka allows him to skip ahead and he follows up with an ace! The crowd roars! Three break points saved - he's saved nine of 11 in total in this match. The steel of a champion?

Hello again. Aimee here for the start of the third set and Djokovic begins with a fresh racquet after mangling his in frustration following the second set. The match not quite going his way at the moment.

So, things we know: this match won't be decided in this set. Things we don't know: who will win. It's too close to call. Wawrinka mesmerizing at times.

A fantastic rally at the start of this set... 26 shots, 27 shots... the crowd creeping forward in their seats... energy sapping stuff, Wawrinka with an iffy drop shot, the point goes to Djokovic. Pressure on the Swiss.

Two break points Djokovic. One is saved, then another - a singled-handed backhand winner from Wawrinka.

    Deuce. Advantage. Deuce.

Whoever is going to serve best in this match, make more first serves, be aggressive, is the one who is going to win this match but it's hard to say who is going to win this.

Wow. You can see the level of tennis Wawrinka can bring when he's at his peak and Novak's job is to stay even.

Pressure service game for Novak Djokovic. He has to hold to stay in the set. A deep breath at 15-30 down. He serves and sparks a seemingly endless baseline rally. Stan Wawrinka asks the most questions but can we see something definitive? We can, a brilliant forehand down the line and Wawrinka points at his head, telling us all perhaps that's he's got his mental game in check.

Can he take this set point? No. Another wonderful rally, Djokovic watches a high ball drop just inside his baseline and yet reacts well to take a point which seemed packed with nerves.

A second set point and Wawrinka stands arms aloft, mouth wide open as he screams in joy. Djokovic was long with a forehand. Strap yourselves in, one hour 45 minutes in, we are level folks. Wawrinka is pumped. Very pumped.

I love seeing a nod of appreciation for a rival in such intense surroundings. That's what Novak Djokovic offers up to a turbo-charged Stan Wawrinka forehand from the baseline. Absolutely un-returnable.

We are then treated to a rally where Djokovic is constantly on the chase, he just doesn't give up and makes it to a Wawrinka drop shot near the net. This time he's cooked though and totally exposed so his rival can convert. No applause this time from Djokovic, he's more focused on getting air into the lungs.

A better service game from Wawrinka after his last effort, closing out to 15.

Djokovic is just so solid and so consistent throughout the match in general. You know what he's going to do from the first point to the last point of the match and that's why I said this match is Wawrinka's to lose, depending on how many unforced errors he makes and how well he serves.

These players are suddenly giving us a glimpse into their minds as they scream in either joy or despair.

This time it's Stan Wawrinka giving himself a talking to as he tries to put the wheels back on this attempt at a third Slam.

It just doesn't happen for him. Novak Djokovic picks out an easy cross-court forehand to lead 30-0 and Wawrinka is wayward into the tramlines to end the game without winning a point.

There are moments where it feels like Stan Wawrinka hits the ball cleaner than Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Roger Federer combined. His blows to bring up 15-15 are stunning, powerful and ultimately force an error. The ball is pinging around frenetically at this famous venue now but there's a hush about the crowd as we reach 30-30, they know this is as serious as this business gets.

A well-placed backhand from Novak across court is called out, he asks for an appeal... feel the hush as we wait... it's in. Fractionally it's in. Break point.

And now we have some cries of joy from Djokovic, his coach Boris Becker stands and just glares. He just glares at his man who walks to his chair pumped after Wawrinka's long forehand. Novak is back in the set. This is intense, just like Boris.

Djokovic starts this service game having made only 49% of his first serves, Stan Wawrinka is on 55%.

A serve up the middle to the Wawrinka forehand forces a long reply, 30-0. After a fist pumping service game from Wawrinka last time out, this is tame as he fails to register a point on the Djokovic serve.

Stephen Parkinson: Is that the turning point of the match? Wawrinka consolidates the break from 0-40 down

Thomas: Novak relaxed too much at 1-2 in this set & his intensity disappeared at the same time. Shouldn't be losing games at 0-40 up

He's had some big first serves, he did a good job to even it out to deuce. Great serving, Stan Wawrinka, after being down 0-40. Spectacular tennis from Wawrinka who really lifted his game and this was the tennis I was expecting to see from both these players. It's incredible to watch. Fantastic shots.

What was it I was saying about no one seizing momentum? After a stunning break, Stan Wawrinka finds himself 0-40 down on serve as he goes long with a long forehand.

Novak Djokovic towels down at 15-40, you can see in his eyes he is contemplating something under this towel. The super computer in his head is whirring away.

A 135mph serve to the body from Wawrinka brings up deuce. That was a real thumper but Milos Raonic still has the quickest serve of the tournament at 143mph.

Wawrinka is summoning his inner Raonic with a second ace in a row, that's four straight points and he's found the afterburners, moving the world number one around at will with a series of powerful forehands and backhands, allowing him to ultimately pick his spot with a forehand from mid-court. Brilliant stuff, Stan is very much the man suddenly.

  16. Wawrinka breaks...published at 22:45 British Summer Time 11 September 2016

    Djokovic 7-6 1-3 Wawrinka*

We have a key break under the blue skies above Flushing Meadows.

Novak Djokovic pushes a ball down into his pocket before serving at 15-15. A forehand from centre court across court sends Stan Wawrinka wide, he gets it back and races back to position only for Novak to hammer another forehand to the same place. It's brutal hitting.

A wry smile from Djokovic as he goes long with a backhand, he still has a 40-30 lead. Tense. The smile disappears quicker than a rabbit under a magician's hat though as double fault number three shows up. Deuce.

No one can quite seize momentum, a backhand across court and wide gives Wawrinka break point. Is this the key moment? Yes it is. Can you feel that Switzerland? Wawrinka, from deep and wide, goes up the line with a missile of a backhand. Shot of the match?

Thomas: One down, 2 to go for Novak. Could be lucky 13 for the Serb... Stan came back well, but could it be mental fatigue?

Sho Rahman: Stan needs to up his first serve percentage. Novak is just getting into too many of his service games

Tonight's winner will receive $3.5 million or £2.65 million in sterling. That sum is the biggest to ever be paid out to a winner of a men's Grand Slam.

But who needs the money most? Stan Wawrinka of course. In his career, the Swiss player has managed to win just shy of $23m, that's around £17.3m.

Novak has won nearly five times that, $102m, or £77m in real money. That's a few houses. Get the tennis racquets out kids.

Djokovic is having a down and Stan has the momentum yet he's not creeping ahead. Novak is able to keep even when he's having his valleys and he's able to pull ahead when he's having his peaks.

The Stan Wawrinka backhand is elegant as he swings through the ball but it becomes explosive as contact is made. He's static as Djokovic fires a flurry of balls back to the same spot and the backhand keeps coming at him. Relentless and beautiful when you study it. Eventually Djokovic fold  as he clips a ball wide to go 40-15 down.

The cushion is enough for Wawrinka, he goes up the middle with a serve and Djokovic gets a mix of strings and frame on it to spoon the ball wide.
