The sun is setting over New York, but these two players are producing enough energy to light up the city. The rubber-legged Djokovic sliding along the baseline, turning defence into attack with a thumping forehand winner. A comfortable hold to love for the Serb. A knee-knocking finale to this set.

I love to watch body language and facial expressions. After that game Wawrinka just nodded his head. Novak is just continuing to be upset, arms up in the air, yelling. He needs to find some serenity. Every once in a while you get upset but he's not very settled and you can't play your best tennis like that.

Boom! A fabulous serve from Wawrinka puts a bit of daylight between him and his pursuer. Errors trickling from both racquets, however, as Wawrinka nets. Deuce. Advantage. Djokovic's backhand return drops beyond the baseline. Hold. A nod of the head from Wawrinka. The body language of a man in control of his emotions.

Brutal from the baseline, you can't take your eyes off this, Djokovic soaking up what Wawrinka throws his way until eventually the Swiss passes him. 30-0. Balletic from Wawrinka, sliding to his backhand to retrieve before passing Djokovic once again. 40-0.

A double fault, nervous whispers ripple around the arena... A brilliant Djokovic return forces Wawrinka to net and the defending champion is closing in on the Swiss.

Another great return from Djokovic has Wawrinka flapping and from 40-0 to deuce.

Anxiety grips the 12-time Grand Slam champion however as he nets a straightforward forehand. Wawrinka breathing a little easier. On the next point the pair slug it out from the baseline and it's Wawrinka's backhand which lets him down. Deuce again.

The two opening points go Djokovic's way. On the next point, Wawrinka pulls Djokovic forward with a dropper but the Serb shows panther-like speed to fetch and produce a sliding volley at the net to move 40-0 up. Wawrinka nicks one point, but a series of punishing forehands from Djokovic has Wawrinka on the ropes and the Swiss throws in the towel, his backhand just about making it to the net.

Novak is putting way too much pressure on himself. He goes from love three down to three all, loses a game on his opponent's serve and he's so hard on himself. He needs to see it as a six game set, not that ever single point is live or die.

Wawrinka going through one of his dips in form and Djokovic is able to capitalise, dragging himself back to 30-30, a key moment in the match, you sense. Wawrinka's response? To laser and ace out wide. Cool as a cucumber wrapped in an ice pack. The rallies becoming lengthier as the match progresses, from side to side they go until Djokovic goes long. Wawrinka holding firm.

And just as we were about to start talking about Wawrinka closing in on the set, looking favourite to win this title, Djokovic bounces back. A routine backhand into the net from Wawrinka for 40-30, another wayward backhand follows to conclude a topsy-turvy rally and Djokvoic levels.

A nervy rally... Djokovic playing mind games, pats the ball back, looks towards his box, gives the impression he's going to challenge, but he doesn't and in a blink of an eye the point whistles in the wind and Wawrinka is beaten. Crafty. Djokovic with a second break point... and Wawrinka can't stop him taking it this time.

Novak has this look on his face like he can't believe what's happening. He's definitely not as focused as he needs to be.

Wawrinka undaunted by the task ahead, undaunted by playing in this soup bowl of a stadium. Momentum is with the Swiss, Djokovic's feet unable to move in unison, Wawrinka's power reducing his options, but he somehow forces this game to deuce - Wawrinka with a stray forehand at game point.

Back and forth the ball flies, a net chord going Wawrinka's way and the point ends when Djokovic nets. Thunder and lighting creeping into the Serb's mind, he's loosing his cool, Wawrinka whipping up a storm.

Woah! Wawrinka's single-handed backhand falters and Djokovic has a break back point - but Djokovic goes long on the backhand. Time to start watching through the lattice of the fingers. Deuce.

Not even a defender of Djokovic's steel can stop Wawrinka in this mood, although admittedly the Serb is throwing in a number of errors to aid the Swiss' cause. The crowd take a sharp intake of breath as lobs are exchanged and the players move back and forth in chase of the ball... Djokovic ending the tension with an overclubbed forehand, allowing Wawrinka to nudge 15-30 up. But no-one becomes the world's best without the ability to dig deep when it matters and that's what Djokovic does. He had to hold, and he does, to 30.

Absolutely incredible stuff from Stan Wawrinka. He just seems to be getting better and better as the match goes on.
