    Djokovic 5-4 Wawrinka*

Wawrinka rattles off six points on the trot and are seeds of doubt being sown in Djokovic's mind? He's 0-30 down and, out of nowhere, Wawrinka has turned into an aggressive shot-maker. He collects three break back points, momentum turning with a forehand winner which leaves Djokovic floundering. What can Djokovic do here?

Djokovic's serve comes to his rescue on the first save, then Wawrinka's radar falters. But the world number one coughs up a double fault and this set is now very very interesting. The crowd stunned.

Even Stan's racquet's are all individually wrapped in plastic bags which are sealed at the bottom so the air doesn't come in and that keeps the tension. On the plastic bag it says 'Stan the man'. I love it.

Oof! Sublime. A first sight of Wawrinka's dreamy single-handed backhand as it flies down the line, getting the better of Djokovic. The Swiss coming up with winners when he needs them most, a forehand to wrap up the hold. Djokovic to serve for the set.

    *Djokovic 5-2 Wawrinka

Djokovic returning the ball with the speed of a cobra's tongue, making it difficult for Wawrinka to assert his authority on his own serve. Wawrinka being forced to come up with otherworldly shots and in going for the extraordinary he's being made to look ordinary - a forehand wide - 15-30, a forehand long - 15-40. Two set points Djokovic.

Decibels rise inside Arthur Ashe. A boomer out wide from Wawrinka, Djokovic can't work his magic this time - one set point saved.

A body serve, Djokovic's screws his return wide. Two set points saved. To deuce we go.

You heard him guys, don't panic.

Gabriel Paine: Wawrinka can beat Novak in US Open Final. Wawrinka in form of his life while Djokovic still looks worn down by injury.

It seems there's a lot of faith out there for Stan. Keep the tweets coming to #bbctennis.

    Djokovic 5-2 Wawrinka

Oohs and ahhs from the spectators as the finalists exchange delicate crosscourt volleys at the net, Djokovic coming away with the point. Both players upping the tempo... Wawrinka with a rasping backhand but Djokovic's defence is impenetrable. Another easy peasy hold.

Wawrinka is down below 40% of first serves landed in this first set now. We saw some emotion from him there for the first time as he clenched his fist.

Pulses racing, Wawrinka pulls through though - to advantage and an ace to secure an important hold. Classy.

    *Djokovic 4-1 Wawrinka

Djokovic swinging loose and hitting it true from the back of the court, a series of forehands forcing Wawrinka to retreat and eventually the Swiss rolls over. From 0-15 to 0-30 - Djokovic targeting Wawrinka's single-handed backhand, stopping him from getting any power on the shot.

But Wawrinka drags himself back into contention. "Come on," he says as a return goes long. 30-30.

Djokovic on the offensive in the next point, backhand to backhand, and eventually it's Djokovic who crumbles. Into the net. 40-30.

Woah! Ruthless from Djokovic, threading a thunderous forehand winner into the corner. To deuce we go. Wawrinka can't afford to slip up here. Argh, he comes across a banana skin... Wawrinka with a backhand long... he's falling... break point Djokovic. Break point saved! Tense.

It's going to take a little while to get used to the world number one coming at you 110 percent. Who could Stan Wawrinka hit with to get ready for it?

    Djokovic 4-1 Wawrinka*

Wawrinka's shot-making a tad wayward. He's trying to put his opponent on the backfoot but isn't able to sustain the pressure, letting Djokovic off the hook on a number of occasions. "Make him play," mutters Wawrinka to himself. Wise words indeed. A backhand into the net from the two-time Grand Slam champ is how the game ends - a comfortable hold for Djokovic.

Wawrinka is up against it in these opening stages, but the Swiss pulls out a feather-soft volley to receive the admiring applause of the fans, and a 30-0 lead. A better service game from the Swiss, Djokovic unable to assert his authority as he whizzes to 40-0. One super Djokovic return is the only blotch on the third seed's scorecard. A hold to 15. He's still in the set.

Stan just seemed a little slow and late. I'm not sure if he's nervous.

I don't think we were expecting this kind of start. It's just one break though. A great start for Novak and it will give him a lot of confidence, the momentum is his way.

    Djokovic 3-0 Wawrinka*

Djokovic winning points at lightning speed, the defending champion is 40-0 up at breakneck speed and he consolidates the break with a crackerjack ace out wide. Ominous. Very ominous.

The crowd screaming as if they're all giving birth and we're only in the second game. It's Djokovic's defence which is drawing gasps, he slides out wide to retrieve the impossible and ends up winning the point as Wawrinka pings a backhand wide. A marvelous opening point.

Wawrinka seems in control but he lets a 40-15 lead slip. Nerve is needed here at deuce, which is something the world number three is lacking. Djokovic stepping in quickly on the return - Wawrinka ballooning his response.

Break point Djokovic. Ah, it's too easy for the world number one. Wawrinka netting. Djokovic has stepped it up.

A good first game from Novak. Those first few games in a final of a Grand Slam, the emotions, tension, stress, you just need to get into the match, relieve some of that.

Both players hugging the baseline in the opening exchanges, first blow to Djokovic as Wawrinka goes long but the Swiss bites back as the Serb nets. 15-15.

Djokovic screwing a backhand wide. Going for the winner. Failing. 15-30.

Wawrinka with a forehand into the net. 30-30. Neither player coming forward, Djokovic attempting to work his opponent from side to side. It's a ploy which works for the Australian and French Open champion - Wawrinka shooting to the moon and back, Djokovic holding to 30.
