57 minutes played and Federer is two sets to the good.

Stunning, absolute stunning from the 35-year-old.

Berdych got the 17-time grand slam champion to 40-30 but could not make it count as Federer holds to take the set.

A mountain to climb for the two-time semi-finalist.

Tomas Berdych is not really making Federer move much, so we can't really see how he has been affected by his injuries.

    Distance covered:

    Berdych 756.2m

    Federer 630.5m

You can tell who is doing the running and who is dictating the points.

Despite that Berdych gives himself a glimmer of hope with another hold of serve.

Roger Federer is defying the years with this performance. Clearly those six months off have done him the world of good.

A simple hold, finished off with an pinpoint backhand down the line.

Goran Ivanisevic's face says it all in the crowd, they can't believe what they are seeing.

Not the start to this second set that Tomas Berdych would have wanted. He's being rushed by Roger Federer and it's clouding his thinking. Berdych is just panicking a little bit. He's going to have to work his socks off here to get back into one of Federer's service games.

It's a very impressive set of tennis from Roger Federer. He took the ball early and was risk taking and he took Tomas Berdych by surprise as he hasn't played as well as that so far in this tournament. Berdych hasn't had a chance to get into this match yet and he needs to start to establish himself now. He needs to make sure that he serves a lot better for a start.

    Right can Berdych respond?

In a flash he is 0-30 down in his own serve.

Can someone remind Federer he is 35?

The serve and volley give the Czech a foothold in the game, but his next shot is wide and it's another two break points for Federer.

He converts the second of those. Berdych struggling on Rod Laver.

    *Berdych 2-6 Federer

Federer serves for the first set and we have only been playing 24 minutes. Not sure many expected this situation.

Goran Ivanišević does not look too happy with what he is seeing from his player Berdych.

Federer takes it to 40-15 with an incredible defensive volley and gives himself two set points.

His first goes into the net, the second is put into the net by Berdych.

    First set Federer. Wow.
