    Berdych 2-5 Federer*

Tomas Berdych does not look at the races today and Roger Federer is running him ragged, dictating the play.

Six games in and the Czech looks exhausted, he runs to try and return a half-volley, he makes it, but cools as you like Federer is there to tap the winner home.

Federer takes it to deuce with a wonderful backhand.

Berdych then finds the tramlines and its advantage to the Swiss, another break point.

Federer's backhand return hits the top of the net and drops in. It's cruel but the four-time winner deserves the double break.

    Can Federer consolidate the break?

He starts with an ace but Berdych finds a way back into the game to level at 30-30.

A short serve keeps Federer's nose in front and a huge forehand sends Berdych into the corner who can only send his return long.

    Hold.

Federer is testing the Berdych serve now and his groundstrokes are leaving the Czech flailing.

He gets the first look at a break in the match at 15-40 and he converts as Berdych nets.

    First blood to Roger.

    Berdych 2-1 Federer*

Stunning back hand by Federer to get an early point off the Berdych serve.

But the Swiss finds the net with his next return and the 6ft 5in Berdych follows that by nailing another ace.

He then serves out the rest of the game and we stay on serve.

    *Berdych 1-1 Federer

Roger Federer opens his ace account for the day with his opening serve, but then  there is a double fault to offer Berdych a point.

Another one and Berdych levels at 30-30.

How to get yourself out of that hole? An ace - the perfect riposte which he then follows up with a powerful serve to seal the game.

Roger Federer’s earliest exit in Melbourne is falling in the third round on three occasions – on his debut here in 2000, in 2001 and in 2015.

Will we be adding 2017 to that list?

Roger Federer, winner here in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2010, continues his injury comeback against Berdych, a two-time semi-finalist.

Berdych is looking to end a five-match losing streak against the 17-time Grand Slam winner, who returned from a six-month layoff this week .

It is the 23rd meeting between the pair and the seventh at a Grand Slam, with Federer winning four out of their six previous matches at a major.

Berdych, from the Czech Republic, has never beaten Switzlerland's Federer in Melbourne.

That stat attack does not favour Berdych, but this is not the Roger of old...

Back in 2012, Bernard Tomic's father and coach John told Evans that he was not good enough to practise with his son at the Miami Masters.

I don't think there was any beef between the two players though. Tomic sportingly applauded Evans' best shots during the match and gave him an extra congratulatory tap as he left the Hisense Arena.

Added to which, Evans beat Tomic back at the 2013 US Open and seemed more embarrassed than vengeful over the whole episode.

Dan Evans, who will play Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the last-16: "I should say thank you to the crowd, it was a great atmosphere and made the match way better.

"It was tough, Bernard is difficult, he is unorthodox and I found it hard at the start . I am happy to come through in three tight sets, it could have gone either way.

On the rain: "I was just focusing on the end goal, it was annoying, we both handled it well and it didn't distract from the match.

On his shop-bought t-shirts: "I am happy with them at the minute,  one shrunk in the wash so I had to change it, but I reckon they look alright."
