    Evans 7-5 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-3) Tomic

Evans points to the sky as Tomic fires into the net to hand him the match.

That may be in reference to his former coach Julien Hoferlin who passed away in April.

A brilliant win full of gritty mentality and diamond shots.

Dan Evans clocking big backhand and holding his nerves steady takes us to 2-2.

A dreamy cross-court forehand from Evans after he has been battered by the Tomic forehand gives the Brit 3-2.

Tomic into the net! Mini-break Evans as they players take on liquid.

Massive. Evans is three holds of serve away from the last 16 of a Grand Slam.

A tie-break at least for Dan Evans in this third set.

He fairly skips to his court-side stool.

Has the break taken the wind out of Bernard Tomic's sails?

He has to hold to stay in the match next. Dan Evans with a free shot at glory.

    *Evans 7-5 7-6 (7-2) 5-5 Tomic

Bernard Tomic knows he has been hustled.

Dan Evans had missed his first serve at deuce. He will get another first serve when play restarts.

And he probably was the player most in need of a break in play. Tomic was in the groove and Evans, muscles tightening, could do with a sip of isotonic and a stretch.

Tomic aims some sarcastic applause at the decision to halt play.

And we are going to get back under way without a roof.

    From deuce then...

  10. Rain stops playpublished at 09:38 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2017

    *Evans 7-5 7-6 (7-2) 5-5 Tomic

A slightly bizarre moment as Bernard Tomic allows the ball to float past him at 40-30 on the baseline.

The line judge calls it in. Tomic looks aghast. It was close. The video replay backs up Tomic's judgement rather than the official's.

    That takes us to deuce.

And then Evans shows some sharp practice, spotting the rain and downing tools.

The umpire's hand is forced and Evans escapes to ease off his cramping leg.

Bernard Tomic is finding the sweet spot of the strings now.

His groundstrokes are streaking towards Evans with a few more mph while his touch around the net is more assured.

Evans is clinging on a little though. He is up for the fight though.

    Evans 7-5 7-6 (7-2) 5-4 *Tomic

Evans batters his way back from the edge, swatting away a massive overhead to seal the game.

A grip of the fist to his friends and family in the players box.

The fly in the ointment might be a touch of cramp that seemed to be biting the Brit late in that game.

Tomic serves to stay in the match next.

Good Bernard comes to the party.

Sublime winners from the shoot-from-the-hip Aussie as he works up two break points at 15-40.

One saved with a whopping serve.

The second with some superb scurry and a deliciously weighted inside-out forehand.

Look out though, here comes a third...

    Evans 7-5 7-6 (7-2) 4-3 *Tomic

Dan Evans is having a fair bit of success by moving to the front of the court. The lateral movement of crab, the hands of a surgeon and Bernard Tomic, robbed of time, struggles to keep pace with him.

One reckless swipe volley brings up deuce, but a doornail-dead drop-shop is too good for Tomic.

    *Evans 7-5 7-6 (7-2) 3-3 Tomic

Bernard Tomic continues to play like he is knocking up with a junior rather than dangling over the edge of the Australian Open precipice.

Sloppy footwork that would draw sighs from Len Goodman and absent-minded swings with the racquet arm.

But his skill and reading of the game means that he gets away with it.

Dan Evans' low, skidding serve gets all up in Bernard Tomic's ribs and the Aussie can only pat back into the top of the net.

It is spitting and spotting rain, but the two players are going to battle on rather than take the game indoors.

Bernard Tomic slides away a volley with some nonchalance to seal the game to 15.

There is a shedload of ability there, it is just the top three inches where he is lacking.
