    Monfils 3-6 3-6 6-4 4-2 Nadal*

What has Nadal got in his box of tricks?

He's meandering out of this match as it stands, his level dropping from the commanding form earlier in the evening.

Monfils, on other hand, is like a pendulum right now, slapping the ball with ultimate timing as he forehands a winner for the game.

Get on your feet ladies and gents.

    What a rally.

Rafa, stagnating a bit at the moment, is scampering everywhere and a drop shot brings him to the net before Monfils passes. Thirty-two shots in that one.

And Nadal into the net for three break points.

One saved - big serve out wide.

But there's the break! Monfils gets the rub of the blue hard-court as his backhand clips the tape and drops perfectly for the point.

Nic MacLellan: Oh, PLEASE not another Rog v Rafa final. I'm a big Rafa fan, but wouldn't it be nice to see someone new win a slam for a change?

wizzdotpee: I really hope Nadal loses today to Monfils. I want an easy ride for Roger. He deserves the 18th gland slam. Federer all the way!

Victoria Whitemore: Come on Nadal. Would love to see a #Nadal #Federer final 🎾

    Monfils 3-6 3-6 6-4 2-2 Nadal*

Monfils messes up one of his crowd-pleasing slams but recovers with a centre-line ace.

Oh and this forehand is long for 15-40...

Monfils looked up at his coach and after an age decides to challenge. Surely he can't wait that long to challenge?

It was out anyway. Two break points.

The Frenchman wins a battle at the net with a pick-up shot that puts Rafa in trouble and then wins a battle at the baseline with a slippery forehand slice.

A double fault on advantage makes you want to shake his chirpy little face with frustration.

And finally he holds with a booming ace.

A wicked, wristy forehand has too much electricity for Monfils and so does this fade-away forehand for the game.

Both men are holding their serves much quicker in this set.

    Monfils 3-6 3-6 6-4 1-1 Nadal*

Monfils' eyes light up as Nadal lifts one high over the net and the Frenchman gets 10 cool points for his leap and slam.

That's a strong service game from the sixth seed.

So. Monfils is on the board and, you know what, I reckon he has another gear should he have the mental nous to find it.

Nadal serves out a straightforward love hold.

Monfils looks like he has a taste for it now. I don't think Nadal will panic that much. What's Monfils going to do next?

Too much pop on this forehand from Monfis? The line judge says yes... but the challenge from the Frenchman is a good one.

Replay the point. Monfils snaffles an ace.

A wonky forehand. Deuce. Ace. Advantage.

Monfils is just playing with us here.

A cracking forehand winner and he's gone from three break points down to taking into a fourth set.

Oh jeez. Is he going to chuck it away immediately?

A stray backhand. A forehand into the net. Three break points.

It's almost like you knew it would happen.

A booming serve allows him to volley his first point of the game.

And now an ace down the middle followed by a serve out wide that Rafa can't handle.

    Three break points saved.

Followed by a double fault - a 200+km/h second serve. What is he thinking?!

Another break point... Rafa finds the net. Deuce...

Rafa's forehand is lashing the top spin now.

Former England cricketer Ashley Giles was known as the King of Spin, but famously had mugs produced with a typo calling him the King of Spain.

Rafa can lay claim to both titles right now.

The serve wobbles though - a first double fault for 15-30.

And too many revs on this forehand for two Monfils' break points... the first is good enough as Nadal whacks wide.

Monfils likes his basketball, and he gets some mega hangtime on a leap to dispatch a volley.

It's almost disappointing when he puts the next volley away in conventional fashion.

In the style of the old NBA Jam games - he could do with being on fire round about now.

Well, he's not bursting into flames, but it's good enough as his serve continues to grow in the match and he sees out the game.

It's 20 minutes to midnight in Melbourne and Prince Rafa will want this wrapped before he turns into a pumpkin.

Monfils is battling for his own fairytale ending, but falling just short. He whacks an all-or-nothing backhand into the net and frames a return into the front row.

Nadal skips out of his chair like a spring chicken to face the Monfils serve.

An out of sorts passing forehand drifts wide from Nadal for 40-15.

Monfils lets the Spaniard back into deuce with a wayward backhand that is accompanied by a Gallic grunt.

Unreal defence from Nadal to stay alive on game point but Monfils, forever the showman, lands a winning volley while performing a Morecambe and Wise-style skip.

    Bring Me Sunshine indeed.

I have no idea what switch has flicked in the head of Monfils, but if only he could have found it sooner as he whizz-pops a forehand winner down the line.

A crosscourt backhand has extra punch but it's wide.

The kitchen sink is going into these strokes from Monfils, but they're landing inches off target.

Here's a return, down the line, that is right on point and Rafa clips the net for deuce.

Incredible defence from Rafa to get a racquet to a blistering forehand and then Monfils messes up the easier point at the net for the game.

Sam Johnson: Please no Fed/Nadal final. Would just be endless topspin forehands to Fed's backhand again. Nadal's won 15 of their last 20 going back 9 years. Their rivalry just isn't as exciting as it used to be

David Melton: Federer v Nadal why not? As long as Stan doesn't win. Since he'd have more majors than Murray which seems ludicrous.
