BBC Radio 5 live commentator David Law spoke to tennis legend Martina Navratilova after Johanna Konta booked a quarter-final with Serena Williams.

"As long as Serena is in the draw, it is not open. She is the favourite for every match she plays.

"We talk about her not having had many matches. Who cares. She's always ready. Konta is playing great tennis though."

  3. 'Serena can't start in second gear'published at 09:37 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    Sam Smith
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

I think Serena's looked great. There can't be any of these second-gear starts she had a few years ago and can't waste energy in the first week.

I think she's looked super sharp - she was tested today by a player who probed and pushed. The match against Konta is another level. It will help Konta that she hasn't played her - there is no scar tissue.

Serena wins her matches often in the first 15 seconds she strolls on to the court, but that's not going to happen with Jo.

As Rafael Nadal and Gael Monfils are introduced on to Rod Laver, the big news of the morning, from a British perspective, is that Johanna Konta marches on into the quarter-finals to face Serena Williams on Wednesday.

British number one and ninth seed Konta swept past Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 6-1 6-4.

Second seed Williams overcame stern resistance from Czech 16th seed Barbora Strycova to win 7-5 6-4.

Tennis might be going through a renewed renaissance, which is fitting when a guy called Rafael is involved.

It seemed like we might be heading for a post-Rafaelite era - no more Spanish, left-handed brushstrokes gracing the canvas of the latter stages of Grand Slams.

But Rafael Nadal, war wounded and battle scarred, could be somewhere near his best again at the age of 30.

And what with a 35-year-old Roger Federer already into a quarter-final, can Rafa add an extra splash of vintage to the last eight?

  8. 'I can't wait to play Serena'published at 03:31 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    Konta 6-1 6-4 Makarova

Jo Konta on her quarter-final opponent Serena Williams: "Believe it or not that's a an incredible experience for me.

"She's one of the few players still playing who I watched growing up. As a young girl wanting to be a professional tennis player, it's an incredible honour and I can't wait to play on court with her.

"Once out in court, against anyone, anyone is out there to compete. Hopefully I'll come off as the winner.

"In terms of enjoying the opportunity and the competition, I will cherish every minute out there."

  9. 'Konta forgot how to lose'published at 03:28 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    Jill Craybas
Former world number 39 on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

A brilliant performance. She got on top of Makarova, slipped a little in the second set but in the end you just get this sense from Konta that she almost forgot how to lose. She came back with so much confidence to win that second set.

  10. 'Makarova made it difficult for me'published at 03:28 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    Konta 6-1 6-4 Makarova

Johanna Konta on her victory today: "Thank you to the amazing crowd again today, you guys were incredible. It really is what makes playing professional tennis so amazing, playing in front of crowds like you, so thank you. I'm really happy to have come through that.

"I think I came out definitely playing at a higher level than she did but she really put herself back into that match and made it difficult for me.

"The way she pulled away in the second set, I don't feel like I did much wrong, she started playing some incredible tennis."

    Konta 6-1 6-4 Makarova

She's done it! Makarova's forehand sails wide and, after a good tussle in the second set, it's Konta that has her arms raised in celebration.

She was strong in that first set, slipped slightly in the second, but that's a good performance from Konta. Up next, it's Serena...

    Konta 6-1 5-4 Makarova*

Bang! Another ace, and Konta has match point after being three break points down. A superb return from Makarova ends that, however.

That's lovely down the line again from Konta, securing the second match point. Can she finish it now?

  13. Postpublished at 03:21 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    Konta 6-1 5-4 Makarova*

That's better from Makarova, a forehand winner down the line, before a double fault takes it to 0-30.

Konta jogs away but she's come off second best in another long rally. Three break points for Makarova but Konta's second serve snaffles one of those away.

Down the line from Konta makes it 40-30 and another ace comes fizzing down. Deuce!

    Konta 6-1 5-4 Makarova*

Makarova readjusts her hat as Konta bounces the ball four times, as precise as ever. Here we go.

  15. Konta breaks againpublished at 03:16 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    *Konta 6-1 5-4 Makarova

Makarova takes a deep breath as she bounces the ball, Konta hovering right on the baseline, but the Russian double faults.

An aggressive forehand is followed up with some less good stuff and Konta's a break point up. Too much on that forehand, again, from Makarova, and Konta breaks! She'll serve for the match.

  16. Postpublished at 03:13 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    Konta 6-1 4-4 Makarova*

Good challenge from Konta to ensure her sixth ace is just that, right as the sun returns, but she doesn't get under a Makarova slice.

Makarova's found her rhythm as she moves around but Konta's next 110mph ace flummoxes her. Out goes Makarova's backhand, and that's three games in a row now that have gone Konta's way.

  17. 'Konta has stepped it up'published at 03:10 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    Jill Craybas
Former world number 39 on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

Konta definitely upped her level in the last couple of games. I don’t think Makarova has done anything wrong, I just think Konta started finding her rhythm on serve when she held and then on that return game she just stepped it up.

  18. Konta breaks backpublished at 03:08 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    *Konta 6-1 3-4 Makarova

Konta's placement on a backhand is inch perfect before Makarova slams a forehand that hits the net on its way over.

Two break points for Konta as Makarova loses her line, but a hammered serve sorts one of those out. Konta shakes herself down and then Makarova's forehand flies out. A fist pump from the Brit, a look of annoyance from the Russian.

    Konta 6-1 2-4 Makarova*

Konta has won 17 successive sets but it'll take some hitting to stop this one not going her way.

Makarova picks up low, bringing Konta forward, and then tries to lob her but a lovely airborne backhand from Konta takes her to 40-0.

Out goes a backhand from Makarova and Konta will hold, but the Russian is serving for the set.

  20. Postpublished at 03:01 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    *Konta 6-1 1-4 Makarova

Swinging all over, this set. Makarova takes an early lead with two backhand winners before Konta cracks a forehand down the line.

Two double faults from Makarova! That makes it deuce but Konta struggles to return a blazing serve, before she over hits again. Game, Makarova.
