    Monfils 3-6 3-6 1-1 Nadal*

Monfils tries a bit of serve and volley action.

Nadal is not impressed - slapping a passing forehand beyond the bewildered Frenchman.

Monfils pulls a backhand rabbit out of the hat though to hold his opening service game in a set for the first time today.

Remember when Rafael Nadal used to seem unbeatable, everything just constantly coming back over the net?

There's shades of that Rafa here as Monfils just has to keep finding an extra stroke and it's always one too many.

A love hold for the Spaniard.

You don't know what sort of performance you're going to get from Monfils. In the first two sets he was too unpredictatble, not focused enough and he's paying the price for that.

    Monfils 3-6 3-6 Nadal*

A double fault at 0-30 hands over three set points.

    Infuriating inconsistency from Monfils.

See! He's just whipped a glorious backhand winner followed by a forehand winner.

    It's pull-your-hair out tennis.

He finally succumbs as he dabs a rocket from Nadal too deep.

Rafa has an eye on the last eight.

    *Monfils 3-6 3-5 Nadal

Monfils spent too much time hanging around the net in that last game and Nadal shows how to time your approach - coming in to put away a volley.

Maybe stick to the baseline, Gael, especially if this forehand winner down the line is what you can muster.

The Frenchman is still pleasing the crowd, somehow scrambling to a ball deep in the court and stretching a downward backhand to make contact - it goes long though.

That momentum shift lasted for about 45 seconds. It was just loose play from Monfils.

All that effort to get back into it is immediately undone.

Nadal means business with a beautiful passing forehand on the run - it gives him three break points and Monfils comes to the net only to prod into the net.

There's delight in the Monfils box. They are urging him on and he nods in their direction.

    Monfils has come alive.

A step-in forehand takes him to three break points.

There's one gone with a wild forehand.

But the second is snaffled as Nadal goes long and all of a sudden the Frenchman is cooking.

    Monfils 3-6 2-3 Nadal*

Nadal and Monfils share a joke over where a serve landed - it's called out. Rafa holds out his arms as if to say "I've no idea where it went".

The Monfils serve is ticking along though and it gets him through the game.

While most players bounce on their toes like a coiled spring when returning serve, Monfils just hunches over - it's very peculiar.

A successful challenge gets him on the board at 30-15 - but Rafa is on the prowl as he toys with the Frenchman by sprinkling in some backhands and then stepping in for a forehand finisher.

Nadal is looking so, so committed to everything he's doing right now. If he can finish this match in straight sets, that will be a huge advantage for him.

The crowd gasp in the midst of a rally, with the ball bouncing like it's on a hot plate, and Nadal goes long with his backhand.

"Arrrrghhh!" comes the cry from the Frenchman though who is disappointed with his return attempt out wide.

Nadal's forehand is clicking into gear - which means he has two weapons now - and that's the game.

Monfils may have the gangly-ness of Woody from Toy Story, but he can't reach this lovely Rafa lob for the first point of the set.

And now he's gone long with a forehand for a break point and another error puts him down in the first game - deja vu of the first set.
