  1. Makarova breaks Kontapublished at 02:56 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    Konta 6-1 1-3 Makarova*

The longest point of the match goes Makarova's way as Konta hesitates on her backhand and the ball bobbles off the top of the net and lands out.

Makarova looks more comfortable now, moving her feet easier, but she can't do anything about the big second serve.

A big return gives the Russian the break point, and a superbly timed forehand gives her the break. Now then.

    *Konta 6-1 1-2 Makarova

Makarova is much more comfortable on her own serve and Konta's keenness to attack it means she twice over hits her forehand.

The Brit shakes her head in annoyance as she aims for the corner again and misses, before Makarova sends her the wrong way to hold.

    *Konta 6-1 0-1 Makarova

Konta steamrollers to 0-30 before Makarova bangs in her serve and Konta's reply ends up in the hands of a ball boy.

The Russian goes down the line, giving her the lead, but Konta pushes her back and that's deuce.

A excellent catch from a spectator as the ball flies off the top of Konta's racquet brings about a round of applause, before Makarova holds her serve.

Makarova is completely confused, guessing on every serve and can barely get a racket on it. Even off the ground she is trying to change it up and be more aggressive but Konta just has an answer for everything.

  7. Game and first setpublished at 02:39 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    Konta 6-1 Makarova*

Awesome stuff from Konta. She keeps firing down the big serves and Makarova just doesn't have the answers, her responses twice flying skew whiff and out of bounds.

Bam, there's the ace. First set to Konta and it's taken her just 24 minutes.

  8. Konta breaks againpublished at 02:36 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    *Konta 5-1 Makarova

Emphatic from Konta, constantly volleying into the corner and all of Makarova's returns are hammered back to her.

Lovely stuff, Makarova's forehand sliding into the net, and now Konta will serve for the set.

  9. Postpublished at 02:32 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    Konta 4-1 Makarova*

Shot! That's lovely from the Brit, down on one knee and leathering a forehand winner. Makarova then responds with one of her own down the line.

A review goes the Russian's way but Konta's fifth ace of the match has her sprawling to the right. Konta tidies up the game on her second serve then marches off for a sit down.

    *Konta 3-1 Makarova

Makarova sends down her own ace to remind Konta what she's capable off and she comes off best in the next rally, forcing Konta to come forward and skew her backhand into the net.

Another fast serve comes down, Konta can't return it, and that's a love hold for Makarova.

    Konta 3-0 Makarova*

Makarova loses her second challenge as there's a whisker of the ball on the line and she responds with a long forehand that Konta returns into the net.

Two aces from Konta gets her nose in front, but Makarova times her response to the next big serve perfectly to take it to 40-40.

Ace, again! Makarova shouts in frustration, before her floaty backhand goes long. Game, Konta.

  12. Konta breaks earlypublished at 02:21 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    *Konta 2-0 Makarova

Ooft. That's empthatic from Konta, a hammered backhand that beats a diving Makarova.

Two break points for Konta as a floaty backhand from Makarova goes long, and then another slam from the Brit, right into the corner, gives her the early break. There's a fist pump and a shout of "come on!"

  13. 'Makarova can really hurt Konta'published at 02:18 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

Makaraova hits the ball a lot flatter than someone like Wozniacki in the previous round, which could be advantageous for her as Wozniacki’s ball sat up a little for Konta to attack. The other way Makarova can really hurt Konta is the angles she can create by hitting it flat off the court.

  14. Postpublished at 02:16 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    Konta 1-0 Makarova*

Konta's starting as she means to go on, giving Makarova the run around before coming up to the net and tapping a backhand over.

Her serve is quick too and that's a straightforward hold for the Brit.

  15. It's a scorcherpublished at 02:14 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

Konta and Makarova are out and warming up. Warming up isn't the right word - it is roasting out there. Just the 34 degrees for the players to contend with today.

    Konta will serve first up.

  16. Serena marching onpublished at 02:12 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    Williams 7-5 6-4 Strycova

Konta's potential opponent in the last eight will be one Serena Williams.

The world number two won an entertaining first set against Czech Barbora Strycova 7-5, despite dropping her serve three times.

It wasn't straightforward but she's take the second set 6-4 to secure her place.

Williams will also regain the number one ranking if she wins the title in Melbourne, after Angelique Kerber's exit yesterday.

  18. The last Brit standingpublished at 02:07 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

As Elton John might once have sung, Johanna Konta is still standing.

She's the last Briton left in the singles competition in Melbourne after Andy Murray and Dan Evans were knocked out yesterday.

Standing between her and a place in the quarter-finals - and a potential meeting with Serena Williams - is Ekaterina Makarova.
