About a firm throw of a tennis ball away from Chatrier (depending how good you are at throwing) there is a heart-warming line from Court 6... Juan Martin del Potro has won his first set at Roland Garros since 2012.

The injury-plagued Argentine, a semi-finalist here back in 2009, is 6-3 ahead against his compatriot Guido Pella.

Elsewhere in the men's draw, Nick Kyrgios has also taken the opening set against his first-round opponent Philipp Kohlschreiber.

    *Konta 6-1 3-3 Hsieh

Hsieh's 14th winner of the match takes her to 15-15 and has a look into a Konta service game for the first time in a while.

The British player slams the door in her face though with a series of big serves and heavy groundstrokes. Konta shouts a "come on" to herself as she seals the game. She's in the zone.

    *Konta 6-1 2-3 Hsieh

For the second service game in a row the top of the net helps Hsieh hold serve, as again Konta is giving no chance by a clip of the tape.

The Taiwanese player is just about holding her own in this second set. Just a third win on clay this seaosn - and a first Roland Garros - will not be handed to the Briton.

Even Konta's second serve has good threat into the corner. And she is really mixing it up beautifully.

    Konta 6-1 2-2 Hsieh*

This is really good serving from Konta. Even on clay, a surface where you see fewer aces and unreturned serves, she is winning plenty of cheap points.

She bags another service game without losing a point.

  6. Hsieh saves break pointpublished at 10:49 British Summer Time 30 May 2017

    *Konta 6-1 1-2 Hsieh

Break point saved by the woman from Chinese Taipei.

A 12th winner off the racquet of the 31-year-old a point later and a bit of fortune as a volley dribbles over with a clip of the tape allows Hsieh to keep this set on serve.

    Konta 6-1 1-1 Hsieh*

Delightful from Konta. She has been all power so far but this is a smart drop shot to take us to deuce.

Hsieh has thrown everything she can at Konta in this game but as a backhand goes wide the Briton has another break point.

There were a couple of moments in the first set where I thought Konta's movement out to the forehand side was a little slow, but in that last game we saw her slide a couple of times - although not that wide - and she handled it comfortably.

    Konta 6-1 1-1 Hsieh*

Konta is doing a fair bit of damage behind her first serve, winning 13 out of 14 points in the first set when she found the service box.

The British number one fires two more aces down in her latest service game which she again takes comfortably.

    *Konta 6-1 0-1 Hsieh

Remarkable indeed. Konta's rise has been phenomenal but she has still never felt particularly at home on clay which makes that set all the more impressive.

Her opponent today is clearly very talented, she hits a couple of winners en route to holding serve to start the second.

It was very impressive from Jo Konta. She hit six or seven lines in the first set and there is nothing you can do about that as an opponent. Hsieh has to keep fighting.

It's still a remarkable sight to see Konta bossing it on the world's biggest courts - three years ago she was making a tearful exit on an outside court after another qualifying defeat, watch by a handful of people.

She is now a major title contender, with top-draw coach Wim Fissette watching from the stands. The Belgian has previously worked with Kim Clijsters, Agnieszka Radwanska and Victoria Azarenka, among others, and clearly sees Konta as a player of similar potential.

    Konta 6-1 Hsieh

That couldn't have gone much better for Jo Konta. She is through another service game without really breaking sweat and that gives her the first set in 23 minutes.

The Briton won 26 of the 36 points in that opener. Impressive.

    *Konta 5-1 Hsieh

31-year-old Hsieh may be trailing out there but she is still smiling.

Konta goes onto the line with a forehand which Hsieh can only scoop back mid-court. That's easy peasy for the Briton as she lashes away another winner. That gives her the platform to break serve again. That smile may not last much longer...

That was impressive from Konta. She was down 15-30 and got it together by playing three beautiful points in a row.

She's hitting the ball in the corner, there's not much margin for error, but she is doing it consistently. There is not much Hsieh could have done.

Ben W: I worry for Andy's chances. Very poor start to the season, and the French Open is the most difficult place for him to regain form.

With Konta on court and Andy Murray and Kyle Edmund to come later today, we're asking how the top three British hopes will fare at this year's French Open.

    Konta 4-1 Hsieh*

What a shot that is from the world number 109. She finds a great angle with a forehand from deep for a clean winner. 15-30. Does Hsieh have a sniff of an opening here?

Not a chance. A big forehand winner and the same off the backhand helps Konta come from behind to hold.

Good stuff from the Briton who had a few hefty blows thrown her way there.

    Jill Craybas

It is always nice to get that first game on the board, it will relax Hsieh a little bit. She came up with some big shots and it was a good service game.

  19. Postpublished at 10:26 British Summer Time 30 May 2017

    *Konta 3-1 Hsieh

One thing to point out here is that Hsieh is unconventionally playing with a double handed forehand, meaning she is holding the racquet with two hands for both of her swings.

She uses that to good effect here, timing a forehand beautifully for her second winner. Konta is thumping the ball but this time a couple too many go long and Hsieh gets her first game on the board.

    Konta 3-0 Hsieh*

Dominant stuff from JoKo early on. She has started like a player ranked 101 places higher than her opponent, everything deep, pulling Hsieh wide before finishing the point by hitting into the open court.

The Taiwanese player actually has more wins (one) at Roland Garros than Konta but there is no sign of uncertainty on the red clay early on from the Briton.
