    Vesely 0-0 Bedene*

It is a lazy comparison to put big leftie Jiri Vesely in the Goran Ivanisevic camp? Probably.

He possesses quite a serve though, whistling that one through at 125mph. Flat as well.

A nice lemon t-shirt for Brit abroad Aljaz Bedene on this sunny afternoon in Paris then. All set? Then we shall begin.

Jiri Vesely booms down a serve and we're off.

Aljaz Bedene has been based in Britain since 2008 and is ranked 76 in the world. How far can he go?

Opponent Jiri Vesely is massive! 6ft 6ins and counting. Don't try and lob him.

    The pair are warming up.

    Jiri Vesely v Aljaz Bedene

Britain's Aljaz Bedene said that American opponent Ryan Harrison "started to tank" during the second set of their first-round match at the French Open, effectively throwing the set away to help him win the third.

    Jiri Vesely v Aljaz Bedene

Well, he beat Novak Djokovic at the Monte Carlo Masters last year, when Djokovic had won his past 22 matches in Masters competitions and nine of his past 10 tournaments.

A dangerous character then, for sure.

    Andy Murray
    World number one

It's been a frustrating start to 2017 but hopefully the illness and injury problems are finally behind me just in time for some of the biggest tournaments of the year.

I'm still coughing my way around Roland Garros as I get over the effects of my latest bout of sickness - the more I talk, the more I want to cough - but I felt fine during my match on Tuesday and happy to get through to the second round.

I haven't played as many matches, or had as many wins, as I would like in the build-up to the French Open but Grand Slams are long events and hopefully I can play my way into form.

The Slams are what's driving me more than the number one ranking. If you win these events, you give yourself a chance of staying at the top of the rankings. If you don't, you don't deserve to be up there.

As we wait for the British number three, shall we hear from the British number one?

And world number one, of course...

  9. 'Lambs to the slaughter'published at 16:52 British Summer Time 31 May 2017

    Haase 1-6 4-6 3-6 Nadal

    Russell Fuller
BBC tennis correspondent at Roland Garros

There are three, maybe four, players that could possibly beat Nadal.

Stan Wawrinka is his biggest worry. He has the ability if he is on his game to play the most extraordinary tennis on this surface.

Of course you can't discount Djokovic or Murray and then Dominic Thiem who beat Nadal this year.

Everyone else are lambs to the slaughter when they go out to play Rafael Nadal.

  10. Bedene needs to clarify the situationpublished at 16:48 British Summer Time 31 May 2017

    Leon Smith
Great Britain Davis Cup captain on Radio 5 live sports extra

Asked for his views on Aljaz Bedene saying he was considering switching his allegiance back to Slovenia instead of trying to qualify to play for Britain:

"I've only read what you've commented on and what journalists have written.

"I've spoken to a few people close to him and they are suggesting it's not the case that he meant what's been reported. It's obvious that he's going to be asked about it after his match today so there's an opportunity to clarify the situation.

"The LTA has supported him very well throughout the appeal with the ITF and I would wait to see what clarification comes out later.

"Of course you want to play in the Olympics, which is why we've been helping him as much as possible so he's available for selection."

  11. Should he stay or should he go?published at 16:48 British Summer Time 31 May 2017

    Jiri Vesely v Aljaz Bedene

British number three Aljaz Bedene is considering switching his allegiance back to Slovenia in order to compete at the Olympics.

Bedene, 27, became a British citizen in 2015 but has been unable to overturn a ban preventing him from representing Great Britain in the Davis Cup.

To go to the Olympics, a player must have been available for the Davis Cup.

"That's a dream for every athlete," said Bedene after beating Ryan Harrison to reach the French Open second round.

Bedene represented Slovenia in three Davis Cup ties before becoming a British citizen - and rules were introduced shortly after his switch barring players from representing more than one nation.

There were emotional scenes out on Court Six earlier today.

Just a matter of weeks after his dad passed away suddenly, American 25th seed Steve Johnson was embroiled in a thriller, eventually defeating Croatia's Borna Coric 6-2 7-6 (10-8) 3-6 7-6 (8-6).

At the end, it all got a little to much for Johnson as he broke down in tears.

The American is back on court now though, playing in the men's doubles competition.

Booooo! Nobody likes to see a match won on a double fault but there it is! Rafa Nadal is cruising through. He was given a workout by Robin Haase, who gave it his all, but Nadal is just streets ahead.

Can he win his 10th title? You'd better believe it.

Robin Haase can't buy a break point. Or even a break point chance. He's been chased around the court all afternoon, giving it all, and Rafa still always finds the shot when he needs it.

    One game away.

Rafa Nadal serves big, kicking up dust and bringing up points. He's as loud as ever as he manouevres his foe around the court, lengthy rally but a punched winner from Robin Haase! Great hit.

I've only seen him play once but I'm already calling that 'a trademark' Haase shot. Both feet off the floor, whole body twisted into the shot, fizzing it away.

    Classic Haase.
