If you stuck a non-tennis fan on Centre at Queen's and asked them to pick out the world number one, three-time Grand Slam champion from the world number 90 who has never won a tour tournament, then they would probably pick out Ryan Thompson as the former, not the latter.

The Aussie rattles out a hold to love - the perfect accompaniment to the break of serve that preceded it.

    Murray 6-7 (4-7) 2-3 Thompson

Another break point for Thompson, aided by a stunning pick-up from close to the net. The ball was behind him! But somehow he managed to scoop it up and get it to safety.

Murray tries to lure Thompson into the net at break point, then pick him off with a lob. He tries... but he cannot execute it. The lob is long, the crowd gasps, Thompson whoops.

Murray is a set and a break down...

It's a beautiful sultry afternoon for watching a bit of tennis, but maybe not for playing. Warm and windy, the ball is certainly flying off the Andy Murray racquet to some unexpected destinations. The Briton's forehand in particular is letting him down. Denis Shapolavov and Thanasi Kokkinakis have already provided a couple of shocks in the opening two days, home fans - and tournament organisers - will be starting to worry about another surprise.

Thompson is coasting along nicely here. Murray can't put any pressure on the world number 90's serve, missing the target regularly with his usually unflappable forehand.

The Queen's crowd are usually pretty quiet, but even they are raising the volume in Murray's moment of need.

Murray edges 40-30 ahead, landing an arcing first serve which lands in the centre line and bounds out of Thompson's reach to hold.

He wanders back to his chair, enjoys a good glug of ice-cold water and thinks about how he can turn this one around.

What. A .Hold. Jordan Thompson is staring down at three break points in his opening service game of the second set, and looks slightly despondent as he puffs out his cheeks on his way back to the baseline.

But a couple of Murray errors let him off the hook, Thompson saving all three to take the game into deuce.

Murray is again getting agitated as he plants a forehand well over the baseline as Thompson nabs advantage, then the Aussie seals the hold when Murray knocks a forehand into the tramlines. Even Hawk-Eye can't save him.

What Murray needs is an easy hold to get this second set up and running. That's what he does get.

While Andy Murray mutters a few more words to himself at the changeover, the cameras train on Jordan Thompson's coach. More interestingly, there's a fella behind him slurping on a chocolate lolly and getting the lady next to him to capture it. Hang on! It's only David O'Leary! That's legendary Arsenal footballer David O'Leary for those who don't know. Excellent.

To say that first set was a surprise was an understatement. You have to give credit to Jordan Thompson. He's not been intimidated at all. He's served and volleyed, mixed it up, come in behind Murray's serve, hit drop shots - he does not seemed fazed by the occasion. Andy's just not at the races mentally. That tie-break was not characteristic of how he plays.

Queen's can't believe it. A collective groan of surprise meets Murray's set-losing shot.

The world number one - and five-time champion - is going to have to come back from behind if he isn't going to be booted out on day two.

Jordan Thompson, ranked 90th in the world, has taken the first set! Andy Murray saves the first set point, but then hands it over with a limp overhead backhand that is gobbled up by the net.

Murray loses the first point, but levels at 15-15 when Thompson lumps a forehand into the tramlines. A dodgy dropshot allows Thompson to go 30-15 in front... here's a chance.

Sorry, there was a chance. A brilliant backhand from Murray cannot be returned by Thompson, who crouches down at the baseline in disbelief.

But then it is Murray's turn to be left open-mouthed when Thompson directs a perfect backhand winner down the line. Deuce...
