    Hello! Don't you just love the grass-court season. That's a rhetorical question. Because I know you do.

    But the problem is this: we never see a British woman winning on home soil.

    Well, a generation of us haven't. Those a touch older than those under the age of 36 have.

    That's because 1981 was the last time there was a home winner at a British WTA event...

    Ah, the grass-court season. The sound of engine-powered mowers scalping the grass within a millimetre of its life. Groundstaff carefully painting out the white lines, hoping they are not caught out by a sudden sneeze. Icy fruit-based liqueurs beginning with 'P'. Strawberries. Big serving. Volleying. Maybe even a spot of sun.

    Summer doesn't start in Britain until the tennis arrives, does it?
