This shows you the standard of tennis these days. You think Jordan Thompson was a lucky loser from qualifying and he's up against the number one in the world and showing the variety in his game and taking Andy Murray on. It's an impressive performance.

It's because it is too hot Lloydy. Us Brits just can't hack the heat. Even after moaning all 'summer' that there has been no sun.

Thompson, who wasn't supposed to be playing the world number one today remember, has played confidently so far. Any jitters at 40-30 soon disappear when Murray whacks a routine forehand into the net.

That means Thompson's worst-case scenario is ending this set having lost a tie-break...

I think a few in the crowd have sun stroke. There's not much energy.

You know it is not quite going to plan for Andy Murray when he starts chuntering at himself. He sits down on his stool at the changeover, muttering the Murray mantra like a member of a spiritual group.

Unfortunately I can't lip-read. But whatever he was telling himself, it works a treat.

A backhand long from Thompson, a net volley, an ace down the middle and a forehand into the net from Murray's second serve covers just about everything you need to know in that quick hold.

    In fact, that is everything.

Now then... Thompson frames an inside-out forehand from the baseline, the ball flying off towards Row A on the far side, as Murray goes 30-15 ahead.

But the Australian digs deep to recover, cracking down a pair of aces - one out wide on the deuce side and the other out wide on the ad side - to hold. Not a bad hand that.

The temperature might be sticking around 30C but it's pretty blowy out on Centre Court, which might explain Murray's lack of early rhythm. The giant new north stand is a sea of fluttering fans, fancy headgear and at least one parasol. Not too many flags or banners around, that's not really the done thing here, just polite applause and the occasional murmur of approval.

Murray is clutching new balls in his hand - but he is forced to wait to use them as some stragglers wander back in from the bar.

Even a grin and a comedy gallop down the stairs from the bloke directly in Murray's eyeline doesn't change the world number one's stoney stare.

Murray takes out his exasperation on the balls, thumping down two aces on his way to a hold to love. Pretty sure that's his first of the match.

Ivan Lendl won't be there for every match for Andy Murray but Jamie Delgado has come in to the coaching team very well. Andy knows what he has to do now and has a good team around him - it's ticking over and Lendl can come in now again.

Murray's easiest hold of the game. A forehand winner and an ace down the 'T' puts him 30-0 ahead, a neat net volley from Thompson stopping his progress. But Murray hammers down another big serve for 40-15 before an unforced error from Thompson, knocking a forehand into the tape from the baseline, brings him back level.

How can Thompson respond in his service game? With a hold to love.

Little difference between the world number one and the world number 90 at the minute...

If this carries on the Queen's crowd are going to get their money's worth today. These games are lasting about as long as an episode of The Simpsons. But there's no chance of seeing a donut in this opening set.

After Murray gives himself hope with a deep, irretrievable forehand at 15-15, Thompson hits back with a hefty first serve before the Brit guides a dink into the net.

I doubt the Queen's crowd saw many rallies in the Kokkinakis v Raonic match. Bish, bang, wallop. The television producers might as well have put old-school Batman graphics on the screen. Ask your parents.

Anyway... the west London crowd are treated some craft here as the pair try to out-fox each other in a 37-shot rally at 15-30.

Thompson stays patient, keeps Murray moving and ends up nicking the point. But then he slaps a double-handed backhand into the net and Murray goes on to hold.

Now it is time for Doctor Murray to examine the Thompson serve. The Brit takes the game to deuce, only for the Aussie up the tempo. He blasts an ace down the T, a puff of chalk appearing from the line. No doubt that was in.

And then Thompson clinches the hold with a fetch from out wide that seems to surprise Murray, catching the Briton out and dusting the baseline.

Jordan Thompson doesn't look nervous at all. A backhand into the net from Murray to go to deuce was unusual - he didn't really commit to it. And then one about eight feet long. Very strange.

Well, this is unusual. Murray twice moves to advantage, twice he double faults.

Then the world number one clubs a forehand long. A third break point for Thompson...

Murray fires his first serve out wide into the tramlines, chance on the second serve for the Aussie? Nope. Muzza goes down the middle and Thompson flops a forehand into the net.

That gives Murray the inch he needs, Thompson handing over the game - an EIGHT-minute game - with a wild swipe of the forehand.

Queen's has gone a little bit quiet. It's either a mid-afternoon lull among those who have sunk a few lunchtime glasses of bubbly, or because Andy Murray is facing two break points in his opening service game... Maybe both.

Thompson whacks a baseline return long as one disappears down the drain. Then the Aussie smacks another into the net.

Both points ending are met by a Dunblane-accented "Come on!". Deuce...

Andy Murray has bought some new threads. Or at least they have been shoved in his kit bag by his sponsors. It's nice to see Andy looking colourful for a change. Blue and red tee, white shorts and socks, crisp white trainers with blue and red soles. Very patriotic. Very Union Jack.

The Brit fails to make any in-roads in the opening game as Jordan Thompson settles any early nerves with a neat service game. The Alka Seltzer of holds.

It might not quite be Henman Hill but the towering new stand on Centre Court has also provided room for a big screen, handily opposite some shade. It's been another hot day in west London, with the temperature around the grounds now touching 30C and on-court conditions likely to be even more severe.

Murray was set to face fellow Briton Aljaz Bedene, but the 27-year-old pulled out with a wrist injury earlier today.

Luckily Australia's world number 90 Jordan Thompson had not nipped out for a shopping trip in the West End. He was kicking about the site, picked up his phone and brought in as a lucky loser from qualifying.
