    *Konta 6-3 2-5 Tsurenko

Yes, Jo Konta is struggling. After failing to make any impression on the Ukrainian's service game, during which Konta was checking her heart-rate, the British number one does call the doctor on to court.

Don't think it is anything too serious, just a precautionary measure. Obviously it is very humid in Birmingham today, perhaps she has a fever.

Britain's James Ward has lost 6-2 6-2 to France's world number 87 Julien Benneteau in the first round of the Aegon Championships at Queen's.

Ward, who is ranked outside the top 1,000 after eight months out with a knee injury, has lost his opening matches at Surbiton and Nottingham this summer.

    Konta 6-3 2-4 Tsurenko*

Some respite for Konta. The Brit gets her side of the scoreboard ticking again with a big service game, then she seems to need a moment on the baseline before facing Tsurenko's serve.

Konta leans over slightly, resting her racquet handle on her chest and seemingly checking her heartrate. One to watch...

    *Konta 6-3 1-4 Tsurenko

Konta looks for an instant counter-punch, jabbing away at the Tsurenko serve for 30-30, but is unable to land a killer blow.

Momentum is firmly behind the Ukrainian world number 34.

    Konta 6-3 1-3 Tsurenko*

Konta has not faced a break point yet - until now...

The British fourth seed trails 15-30, again bringing out a timely first serve which Tsurenko pushes into the tramlines...30-30.

Konta goes down the line with a forehand after a brief baseline rally, instead of sticking with successful method of going cross-court... and it is long.

Break point for Tsurenko... And she takes it! Konta has the Ukrainian stranded on the deuce side of the court, but she cracks a cross-court backhand too cleanly and it is called out.

Konta goes to Hawk-eye... about half an inch between ball and line.

    *Konta 6-3 1-2 Tsurenko

Double faulting is an auspicious start for Tsurenko. Then a crackerjack of a winner gives us a glimpse of why she has earned five top-10 career victories. Then more scratchy play shows us why she is ranked outside of the top 30...

Konta takes the game to deuce, but the Ukrainian scraps her way to safety.

    Konta 6-3 1-1 Tsurenko*

Now then, a bit of pressure on the Konta serve. Tsurenko edges 30-15 ahead, before Konta finds her first serve to leave the Ukrainian rocking. And the Brit backs it up with a couple of thumping forehands to drag herself away from potential trouble.

The cross-court forehands are a particular favourite for Konta - they have represented a whopping 83% of her winners today.

Jo doesn't listen to too much pressure from the outside. When you're playing in England in the summer it's an important trait to have. It's probably nice for Andy Murray to have someone in the top 10 with him, but hopefully Heather Watson and I can improve our ranking and take some of the pressure off Jo.

Jo Konta made a big close-season signing when she brought Wim Fissette - best known as Kim Clijsters' long-time coach - into her camp.

Fissete was not present in Nottingham last week, but has been sat in Konta's box here in Birmingham. He pops down at the changeover and offers a few words of wisdom to his boss.

Tsurenko kicks off the second set, managing to hold in the the opening game. Not doing that proved to be downfall in the first set, remember.

    Konta 6-3 Tsurenko

Jo Konta clenches her fist and bows to the court in celebration. The start to the Aegon Classic that she dreamed about last night.

The British fifth seed racks up three set points in her service game, after Lesia Tsurenko held her serve, taking the first one when the Ukrainian wallops a forehand long.

    Konta 5-2 Tsurenko*

No sweat. Konta's service game has barely been bothered by world number 34 Tsurenko. Another break now will do the job. But if not, then she'll serve out for it anyway.

    *Konta 4-2 Tsurenko

Not this time, Jo. British number one Konta can't turn that break point into a break either, Tsurenko clawing her way back to a battling hold.

Konta has the ball back, now she needs to stop her Ukrainian opponent from building any momentum.

    Konta 4-1 Tsurenko*

Uh oh. More bother for Lesia Tsurenko.

Johanna Konta puts her foot on the gas, teeing up two more break points. Tsurenko turns her racquet into a spade to dig herself out of a hole, only for Konta to hit a brilliant baseline winner for a third break point of the game...

Lesia Tserenko has won three WTA titles during her career, the latest coming at the Mexican Open in March, so she can clearly play. However, Johanna Konta is not letting her.

The Ukrainian starts her side of the scoreboard ticking with a hold, but hardly gets a sniff on Konta's. The Brit moves 40-15 ahead, sealing the game with an ace.

  15. Bedene pulls out of Murray matchpublished at 13:07 British Summer Time 20 June 2017

Meanwhile we have a bit of breaking news from Queen's. British number three Aljaz Bedene has pulled out of his first-round match against world number one Andy Murray because of a wrist injury. Aussie world number 90 Jordan Thompson is the lucky loser who takes his place in west London.

Let's hope Thompson hasn't popped out into the West End to do a bit of shopping and ran out of phone battery.

    Konta 3-0 Tsurenko*

Of course, breaks aren't worth too much if you can't hold your own serve. Especially in the following game. No such concerns for Konta. Ukraine's Tsurenko has few answers to the questions posed by the fifth seed, batting a cross-court forehand wide as Konta seals the hold.

    *Konta 2-0 Tsurenko

Jo Konta, with her trademark white visor pulled down over her forehead, beckons over the ball-kid for a few balls.

She has the honour of kicking things off. The Brit notches up a straight-forward hold, then instantly puts pressure on the Ukrainian's own serve.

Breakthrough. The perfect start for world number eight Konta.

    Konta v Tsurenko

Johanna Konta, speaking to Eurosport, about her run to the Nottingham Open final: "Overall it was great week, despite not winning the final. I had five back-to-back matches on the surface and played some good grass-court players. It was positive that I was able to adapt against each player. And it helped with my movement on the grass.

"I really enjoy playing at home, it is a bonus when I can drive to events and stay at home. And the weather has been good so I can't have any complaints!

"Today's match it is going to be really tough, she made the semis last week and is playing well on the surface. She will be a tricky opponent. She's a good player."

    Konta v Tsurenko

Konta didn't bag her first WTA title on home soil on Sunday - or her first grass title - but she now has another chance at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham

The world number seven, seeded fourth in the Black Country, has just strided out onto a sun-soaked Ann Jones Court.

Across the net today? Ukraine's world number 34 Lesia Tsurenko. They have played twice and it is 1-1 so far.

Jo Durie? Our Sue? Nope... it was, of course, Virginia Wade.

Johanna Konta came within a whisker of ending that barren run when she reached the Nottingham Open final at the weekend.

But then Donna Vekic - the Croatian world number 70 (and Stan Wawrinka's other half) - had other ideas...

    Virginia Wade
